Default Somethin' Extra Gear...

I'm in the process of building my second Somethin' Extra w/ 3D mods and, seeing as the stock gear is a little short (plane doesn't rotate very well for takeoff, prop strikes easily), I'd like to put some aftermarket gear on. Who has done this, and what did you use?

I also got mine from TNT Landing Gear. The model number I bought was LG-177 for $20.

Default 3-D Modifications

Cody,

What sort of modifications are you planning and which engine do you plan to mount?

Default Somethin' Extra Gear...

After bending the gear several times and numerous broken 12x4 props, I went with this Du-Bro set.

Du-Bro #789

Works great and look pretty cool too

The TNT landing gear I mentioned above is actually bent to the same shape as the original SE gear and looks the same, except it is taller.

The reason to use the new gear is to run a 12.25 x 3.75 fun-fly prop.

3D mods will be bigger elevator and rudder, perhaps ailerons.

To gain prop clearance I re-arched the stock landing gear a bit and got about another inch of clearance that way.

I run an ancient K&B .61 in mine with an APC 12x8 prop. It's got much better performance than an OS .46 but weighs only about 1/2 ounce more. These are about the lightest .60 size engines made. Vertical with this engine is unlimited and can easily go from hover to resume vertical climb.

Default SE Gear

Here is a shot of my SE with a set of TNT's 60 size "Bowed" gear

Quite a bit more clearance.

Scott, I think it is possible to get about the same increase in ground clearance by carefully re-bending the stock gear.

What size prop is that? When I used to fly mine electric it was direct drive and turned a maximum prop size of 12". Now as glo-powered it still spins a 12" prop. With your gearing it looks like you've got an even larger prop.

Gerald,

It has a 14x10 in that picture. I finnished the motor mount at Christmas but have only had a chance to make a quick static run
as work is keeping me really busy.

I thought about just bending the gear but these give me quite a bit more clearance while still keeping a wide stance and I want to beable to run a 16" prop if I want to.

The motor is a Kontronic 600-18 with gearing to be around 3:1
on 12 cells (maybe 14). I need some time to do more testing but it looks to be in the ball park.
