SUPER SPORTSTER 20/40/60/90/BIPE
I am a big fan of the Great Planes Super Sportster and am currently building my second Super Sportster 90/120. I thought it would be nice to have a thread dedicated to JUST PHOTOS OF THE SUPER SPORTSTER 20/40/60/90 and bipe. You can find information and photos all over RCU in regards to these Planes, but I dedicate this post to all the Sportsters in various sizes and would really enjoy seeing yours. I have had 2 Super Sportsters, the Super Sportster ARF .40, and a Super Sportster 90/120 I built from a partially built kit. I am currently building my second Super Sportster 90/120 and have just started the covering process. Out of the many airplanes I own and have owned, the Sportsters are my favorites.

Here are a couple pics of my soon to be completed Sportster 40...I bought this kit for my dad for Christmas in 1995, and he did a beautiful job framing it up. He did extensive lightening to it as his plan was to make it electric powered, but never got past the frame up stage.. When he died in 1997, I inhereted all of his models including this Sportster! Because I was very busy raising kids at that time, and wasn't doing much flying or building, I gave most of his stuff away to friends of ours and club members that knew him...well recently, I got back into flying again and ran into the friend who I gave the Sportster to...Indeed, he still had it and hadn't touched it since I gave it to him!! He was happy to let me have it back so I could finish her up! So here it is....I've been really careful to do a nice job on it because it has so much centimental value...but I do plan on flying the heck out of it cause I know he would want me to...I built a Sportster 40 in 1993 (Dad gave it to me for Christmas) and loved it! Then about 1996, I built a SS 60 and loved it as well. Powered by an RJL 61, it was a sweet flyer....This one has an OS .50SX in the nose which should have way more than enough power considering how light I expect it to come out. I'll try to keep you all posted on the progress. Right there with you ckangaroo70...Sportsters are also favorites of mine!....Johnny

Heres mine. No longer in that finish. It was 10 years old at the time of this picture. Now at 13 years its still going strong. Wore out the first engine, OS .60fx. Put a ST.75 in it in, about, 1999. That ST.75 now has well over 200 hours flying time. Fast as a scaulded dog and unlimited verticle. Had to build a new wing since the original wing failed the plane thru tree test. Depth perception is a terrible thing. But at least the fuse and half the wing punched thru that tree. Some of the mods I did were, both wings were built with a 3/8" ply joining spar and additional glass over the wing center section. I can do a full power verticle dive and do a quick pull up without snapping the wing. Moved the gear to the fuse, made a hatch in the tail to add and remove weight as needed depending on the engine and trimed the elevators in the center to allow more rudder throw. It also flys nice and slow and will just float in a nice 10 mph breeze. A good wide performance window.

I am saddened that they would discontinued these kits. I would love to build a few more Super Sportsters but it looks like Great Planes has turned to selling mainly AFRs.... What a shame.
Well here is my first SS. Its a 40 size with an OS 70 surpass II. It had an untimely death do to a faulty switch harness.
Sorry to all you dial uppers that the pics are so big.
I'll post more SS pics later...

Great looking SS Gumhead! This post I started is really turning out some very nice Super Sportsters! I am actually in the process of covering the Super Sportster 90/120 I am building. Got most of the fuse covered, and now it is time to start covering that big 72" wing.

RE: SUPER SPORTSTER 20/40/60/90/BIPE
Hello all,
Lots of great looking Super Sportsters.
I had 3 SS 20's many years ago. Sold all 3 of them along with the first SS bipe. They all flew great but would tend to tip stall if one was trying to land too slowly.
So, here are other pictures I scanned of the SS 20s and the first SS Bipe. These are pictures from 1991 and 1994. The picture with multiple planes has the first two SS 20s and the first SS Bipe along with a GP Cap 21 and a Goldberg Tiger Jr. The young boy holding the SS Bipe is now 25 years old. The red with yellow trim SS 20 was the last 20 size I built. I only flew it 3 times before selling it.
Anyway, I have two more SS Bipe kits. The one in the photos was partly scratch built. I had a wing kit and built the fuse and tail feathers using the parts from one of the kits as templates.
If anyone is interested, I would probably part with the kits. I can't see needing them since I already have the built SS bipe. Let me know if interested.
Thanks,
George

RE: SUPER SPORTSTER 20/40/60/90/BIPE
The first SS Bipe was originally had a OS FP 40 (low on cash in those days) which was replaced with a early Magnum 45 Pro (copy of a OS 45 FSR, same as a Royal 45). The lastest one is powered by a Thunder Tiger 46 Pro. The TT is new but I may change to an OS 46AX before I fly it. I have a new one that is intended for a GP Patriot, but it is now in limbo as I don't have the incentive to finish it. I already have 18 planes ready to fly.
The first SS Bipe was a missle with the Magnum in it. It had to be the fastest bipe I have ever flown. Because of the problem with the tip stall, I always landed hot. I have video (VHS) of it landing and it looks like it is doing about 50 when it touched down and sounded like it too. Those were the good old days when I had better vision and was fearless.

RE: SUPER SPORTSTER 20/40/60/90/BIPE
Great Planes recently came out with the Giant Super Sportster ARF which has a span that is 10" bigger than my SS 90/120. It is a shame that it is an ARF, because it sure would be a fun one to build from a kit, and I like the cowled nose. Has anyone reading here fully enclosed the engine on there kit built sportster with a cowl? I kind of like the old classic looks with the engine exposed, but I really like the looks of sportster with a full cowl as well.

I too have often thought of cutting the wood off and looking for a cowl. it sure would make changing engine and engine mounts easier. I cannot find anyone who would sell the cowl that would retain the right look.
Any suggestions?
BTW I currently have ready to fly a Sportster 90 with an OS 1.08 FSR that just flat goes like hell, a Sportster 60 with a ST 61 that also goes great, a sportster 20 with a Tower Hobbies .46 that is unlimited verticle and flies great too. On the bench now i am covering and finishing the sportster bipe-which i have modified to accept a magnum .90. Had to move the firewall back and replace with a thicker homemade one. I got the idea from the sportster 60 instructions where it outlines doing a similar mod to let the model accept a 4 stroke engine that is longer than the 2 stroke.
Also still in the box is a sportster 40 that once built will give me the entire fleet of sportsters!

It would be neat to have the entire line of Sportsters. My buddy snapped these few pics of my Super Sportster 90 before I flew its maiden flight. This is my second Super Sportster 90, and after a little more tweaking here and there I am sure it will be as good a flyer as my other one was that I traded off last fall and kicked myself in the butt for doing. That is the reason for building a second one.

RE: SUPER SPORTSTER 20/40/60/90/BIPE
Hi All,
I just finished a SuperSporstsr Bipe converted to electric with an AXI 2826-10 Motor and a 11.6V 3300 mAH LiPoly battery delivering about 375 Watts. Final weight is 4.5Lbs. I haven't flown it yet, but I hope to soon. The colors are pearl wine and pearl white. Interesting kit. The bottom wing design seemed a bit dicey so I added dihedral braces just to be safe. Any tips on flying? any bad habits? I wonder why GP discontinued the kit... I have a build log over on the WattFlyers site here: [link=http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=96891#post96891]Sportster Bipe On Wattflyers[/link]
Thanks,
Franny

If you still have a unstarted 40 Bipe kit I'm interested. My e-mail address is [email protected] let's talk. I don't know why but my e-mail address keeps getting fouled up. Just disregard the roffcharlie12 at yahoo part and start with proffcharlie12 at yahoo dot com.
