RCU Builders come together to build Pitts!
At this point 18 members of RC Universe have come together, and have decided after much discussion to build a Jim Leroy Bulldog Pitts Bipe as a team project. The way this project will work is that each builder will volunteer to build certain pieces of the Plane. Those pieces once complete will be sent to a designated member(RCKen), who will do the final assembly of the Plane. We are in the beginning stages of this build, and have several issues to iron out before the actual building will begin. This project once completed will be sold by some means undecided yet, and the funds donated to an RCU charity (Humane Society). The main goal of this project is to promote the joy of building Model Airplanes, and to also put the talents of these builders to use in helping to raise money for charity. Let me introduce you to our team of craftsmen!
1.ckangaroo70 (laser cutting)
2.RCKen (Ken will do final assembly, and is also the Graphics Sponsor for this build)
3.Stickbuilder (Stickbuilder will build the Main Fuselage for this project)

5.DavidAgar
6.AllTheGoodNamesAreTaken (Elevators build)

Bipe Flyer said he had a set of plans for the Pitts Bulldog, so maybe wait for him to chime in and see what he has to say in regards to the plans he has. We also have a few people willing to print some plans out for the group, and there is also the option we discussed about using the program Tile Print. I have mainly always built kits, and had my plans put in the box for me! So you fellows that are used to starting from square one will probally have some better ideas and suggestions than what I could share. I am all ears!

RE: RCU Builders come together to build Pitts!
I'm not sure about ya'll each printing your own plans and cutting out the pieces. You might get a little off in some places.
www.BigAirplanes.com makes some great Pitts kits.
Hope this helps,

RE: RCU Builders come together to build Pitts!
I would also like to see a 1/3 scale Pitts built.
As soon as we decide on a plan to use ( I like the Bulldog) we can see who is going to build what pieces. Do we plan on doing a full out scale detail job ie: rib stitching, rivets, panel lines and detailed cockpit??

I say we will probally detail it as far as people will volunteer to go on it. If there is a team member who wants to do something extra on the plane to make it more detailed, then I can't see many people objecting to that.

RE: RCU Builders come together to build Pitts!
I would think that the size may depend largely on what kind of engine we can obtain. But I'd also like to see it in the 1/4 - 1/3 scale range.
This may be a bit premature, but I'd be willing to commit to whatever portion of the tail-feathers are available.
If it's possible, I'd also like to end up with or purchase a copy of a complete set of the plans as I'm sure when this project is done I'm going to have to build one of my own!

Bulldog Pitts!!!!![sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]..Hi Guys; I`ve used, Bipeflyers Tile print program, for a number of Scratch ,from drawings, builds now.And if a person can use a ruler to measure with. There`s no problem, with things going off scale..It`s an awesome program. Those wanting to try the program, He has a "Free"Trial offer at, http://www.blackflight.com/ .Here`s a few pics for Rcu members that have not seen what the Bulldog Pitts looks like ..Scale sizes, 1/3 would work out ,to about a,6 feet wing span. 50%= nearly 9 feet.I would think that, 1/4 scale, might be a touch small, @ about 4+1/2 feet, but that size, may be the easiest ,to ship back and forth..

UPS Site Calls Large "A package is defined as large when the size of the package exceeds 130 in. (330 cm) in length and girth combined." Just Thinking Things Through.

RE: RCU Builders come together to build Pitts!
This is going to be a blast.[sm=thumbs_up.gif] When it's time to divide parts up, I'd like to build something easy (i.e. the rudder). I don't want to let anyone down with something complex since I only have minimal experience building kits. [8D] -Andrew

Put me down for the fuselage. I don't think that you will want to break that up into more than one piece. Someone else can do the tail feathers, and the wings and the cowl. I'm good with that. Are we going to go with the open cockpit, or the canopy model? How far do you want to go with the cockpit detailing? Rivets, pinking tape, etc?

RE: RCU Builders come together to build Pitts!
Big Question!!! What covering material are we going to use?? I vote for Sig Koverall. It will give the plane a scale appearance and will accept rib stitching and tape very well. It will also accept almost any kind of finish. I am will to do part or all of the covering job. I can also do the rib stitching and tape as well.

As long as I don't have to do any of the covering, then I will be happy with whatever is used. Covering is just not my forte. I do think the Koverall and dope my give the best scale finish. You and stickbuilder both work with that stuff, and I would be happy to see either or both of you cover the Plane, and whoever else is comfortable with that type of covering. I used tissue and dope as a kid on small planes, but later found the miracle of ultrakote and monokote. Not the best stuff to use on scale models, but works well for everything else.

I can solder very well. I don't know the Pitts well but I'll volunteer for the struts if any.
Or braze so I can do any of the reinforcement wires too.
Just trying to get this thing going and I see many have already volunteerd for the tailfeathers and wings.
The wingboxes if no one else wants them or any servo mounts, or just whatever.
Great work all. Let's get her done.

Just something to keep in mind....if we use a standard set of Pitts plans, some of the scale outlines will have to be modified to match the Bulldog. The website http://www.bulldogairshows.com/ has some good videos and a short description of the modifications that were made to the Pitts design.

Koverall and dope is great with me. If someone else wants to build the fuse, I'll do the covering. Koverall and dope is really very easy. Gives you a great scale covering job as well. It's just a lightweight Ceconite, which is what the full scale bird is done with. Koverall will accept many different finishing mediums (from dope, to automotive, to Latex) Whatever you want to use. It goes on better than does any iron on material, and forms to compound curves (inside or outside).

Bill,
I can do the covering or share 50/50 with you, it really doesn't matter to me. We have alot of team builder here and someone else may want the fuselage.
Ckangaroo70, I may have a contact to get rib stitching material for the plane I will check to see if he will donate the material.
Later!!!
