yea I know what you mean about the deer season. Our gun season comes in the last week of this month. So I too will not be working on my plane that week.
Thanks

ORIGINAL: SirChadwick

yea I cant wait until I'm finished with this last wing. I just started the left wing tonight and I'm all ready tired of messing with it. I just hate doing things twice that's all.

Do you think that I'll have enough power with the engine I bought? Fuji Imvac say's that it will put out 5.7HP at 9000rpm giving 30lbs of thrust while spinning a 22x10 prop.

I know I really dont care for how they keep the wing attached by haveing to drill and tap that pole. Did you ever run into any problems with that at all?

well I must go back to working on that damb wing. Looking forwared to hearing from you. Thanks agian
Chadwick
Much cleaner with paragraphs... Just my opinion .

Well, my 80 RV has 8.5Hp at 8500 RPMs if my memory serves me well. A lot more power than the fuji... 3D will defenitely be out of question and by all means keep the plane light. A 22x10 prop is a 50cc prop. The plane will defenitely fly but performance may be a bit deceiving...

I also really don't care about the stock wing attachment [>:]. I reinforced the wing root so that it could accept a 6-32 blind nut and bolted the wing to the fuselage from the inside of the fuselage. It worked great for 2 years now. I did the same with the stabs except the bolt is on the underside of the stab instead of from inside the fuselage.

Wings are not allowed to come appart on any plane so the stock setup is not allowed also IMO...

second one is the leading edge of the elevator glued to the elevator, then trimmed up to let some more balsa dust fly

Man that sucks!!! What piece are you missing? I still havn't worked on mine since the last post. I've been going round and round with Tower Hobbies. They over charged my Debit card $148.68 and they are giving me the run around about it. So need less to say I dont feel like working on a plane at the moment. Then not to mention our deer season comes in on Monday so i wont be getting much done that week either. Any ways hope you get your piece soon.

well i came home tonight and my parts from great planes was on my doorstep so i wasted no time in getting back to the build

first i had to build all my jigs, glue some sheeting together, and the main leading and trailing edge supports as well

after that i laid down the plans for the right wing, pinned the main spar and got all the ribs cut out and all punched out,, wow that all took some time to do all that,i worked a little late but it felt good to get back at it

Hey there, Yes I remember that step. Good thing you only have to put together those jigs one time. I have my second wing finished up just about. The only thing left if to put the leading edge's on the wing and the aileron. I really hate haveing to shape the leading edge's of those parts. I wish the kit would have come with those allready done, but that would be a perfect world.

I have been hunting these last two days, I shot at a 8 point on Monday and missed. Tuesday I shot and hit a 6 point but never found him. We tracked that wounded deer for hours and never found him. That really sucked. My buddy shot a spike finally at about 4pm when we were getting ready to head off to another woods. I'll give it another try this weekend. I have planed to hunt Saturday and Sunday, hopefully I'll get a monster buck (LOL).

Well good luck with your build. The wings are pretty straight forward and boreing. If you get stuck shout out and I know I'll be able to help you, you should'nt have a problem though. Good luck building, and I'll try to post some new photo's soon.

Should be good! I think you were not for all out 3D so it will be perfect for you.

Put your rudder servo (only one) in the tail as well as the elevator servos because this motor is heavier than others.

What kind of prop does this motor spins? 24x10? 26x8?

then i glued the leading edge of the wing on,wow some carving and sanding to due

here is a picture of the leading edge all sanded down

im looking for a little help here as this task took some time and there has to be a better way then how i did it

i carved some first but was scared of taking too much off,i did have a leading edge round sanding bar from tower but it was too small,so i sanded it with a bar sander then used a long piece of sandpaper and used the see saw method keeping the sandpaper at the same ange of the airfoil, any suggestions for when i get to the other wing cause im not looking forward to that already

What you can do before shaping the leading edge is to use wide masking tape tp protect the sheeting on the wing. I always use the blue painters tape. I use a long sanding bar with 80-grit to rough shape the leading edge. Sand until it just touches the masking tape. Then use a 150-grit to smooth down more and finish wih a 220-grit. Take your time and don't press down on the sanding bar. Check often and sand slowly. Takes time but it is worth it.

On engines: I had initially used a GT-80 and was not quite happy with the power, so I mounted a Brison 6.4. Plenty of vertical but too much weight. I then replaced it with a 3W70 twin. Enough power, not silly power. The all-up weight is now where the plane flies lite again.

What I would suggest for rudder servo placement is to have both pull-pull exits & servo in tail mounts. Decide which to use after the plane is complete. I did this and it saved me some trouble when switching engines. With the GT-80 and 3W70 I used pull-pull FutS5050 under canopy and 2 x JR8611's in tail with the Brison.

Safe Flying!

Steve,

Hey man that leading edge sure is a pain in the wrist. I used my dremel w/ a drum sander to carve off most of the extra wood, and to start the shape. I then switched over to my Great Planes bar sander to finish it up. In fact it was so much of a pain I still have'nt sanded on my leading edge on my second wing yet. I hated it so much that I keep wishing it will sand it self, but I know that isn't going to happen. Any ways, it looks good! Keep up the good work. Maybe I'll get back to work on mine one night this week after work.

blikseme 300,,hey thanks for the info about the masking tape ill be sure to use that on the next one for sure that will help a bunch

chadwick, welcome back lol,yes it was a pain the whole time i was doing it i was thinking i have to do this again!!,i did use a dremel on some of it but was scared to take off too much,oh well we all learn how to do things better

some more progress with the wing i now have the airlerons cut off from the wing and yes you guessed it more sanding lol

then i got it all sanded down and installed the hinge blocks in both the wing and the airleron side

This what I did to reinforce the aileron servo mounts.

As for servos to use, anything metal gear will suffice. I fly competition so no matter what, I use coreless digitals as I think they are more durable and much more precise than cored motor servos (digital or not). I will use any coreless analog before a cored digital.

In my Extra I used 1x 5955 for the rudder, 2x 5955 for elevators, and 4x 5925 for ailerons. I now have switched to 5945s for the ailerons because the 5925s were getting real old (came from another plane). The elevator servos I use are major overkill but I want to standardise to this servo. That will make things more simple in the long run.

I fly Hitec servos. The 56xx series of servos may be good but I don't like their precision at all. If you can live with cored motor precision, then those servos are cheap and up to the task for this plane. Just use 2 for the rudder because they are about half as powerful as the 5955 I use. Well, you may get away with only one 5645 on the rudder with reduced throw...

3d joy,hey thanks for the picture i was wondering if mine was solid enough i could move them ,so i am going to put a piece like that in,so as long as i use metal gear servos i should be fine? there are so many to choose from,im trying not to go overboard with this being my first big plane but i want something that will work and last and not cause a problem, thanks again for your input

i got the airleron leading edge glued on

then i sanded it all down and put in the bevel and made another mess lol

then i cleaned up my work area and laid the plan down to start the left wing yee haa

so the right wing is done except hinging the airleron,i have not hinged any control surfaces as i am practicing on bought extra balsa on installing the hinges so i know what im doing before i do it to the real thing

Well you may be better with other advices than mine on servos. As I said, I use only coreless digitals. I guess the 5645s are fine for the whole plane but they are awfully slow...

The new JR sport line of servos is getting good reviews.

Also, maybe its too late to talk about that but when doing leading edges, I use a razor plane to remove 90% of the wood to be removed and I then use a T-bar sander for the remaining 10%. That is much faster and produces MUCH less balsa dust!

The second wing was the most boring time of the construction for me. Good luck!

Putting triangles as I suggested may help in flutter prevention as the servo mount is then stiffer. Its light, easy to do and effective.

Don't worry about your shop being dirty, it will never be worse than mine!
