Thanks Rick. Those Goldberg kits fly well. I had the Chipmunk, still flying the Ultimate after 15 years and the Sook, and they all are great flyers.
So...now that the SMP is officially retired and a hangar queen, is another one in the plan? If you start now you may finish before me.

I think I need to shop around for covering! Was in a LHS last week and almost fainted on the spot at what they wanted for a roll of Coverite fabric. Little bit of searching online has produced more favorable results. Not sure where that place got their pricing, but way out of line compared to anywhere else........

What I can see is beautiful. You have shown me that excellent flair at the top of the landing gear. It’s kind of like "see what I did"[sm=confused_smile.gif].
Please share with us how you did it. It looks great[sm=thumbup.gif]. I am always up for learning from some one else. Figuring it out by trail and error gets to be a pain in the [sm=what_smile.gif]
Hope you post us some more pictures as you finish it up.

The engine is a magnum 52. I have used these engines for years and have never had a problem. ( I think there made by OS or in the same factory ) The landing gear flares are made with SIG epoxolite. First i taped plan protector to the fuse then i mounted the gear. Mix a generous portion of epoxolite and apply it around the base of the gear with a stick. after 30-40 minutes it will be stiff enough to start molding. To mold just use your fingers dipped in water. Keep working it until you get the shape you want. Let it sit until completely dry, then you can remove the gear ( which won't stick to the fuse because of the plan protector ) and do the final shaping and sanding. I plan on doing a small wing fillet using the same method. I will take detailed pics when I do. Hope this helps.

Actually, OS is Japanese and Magnum (ASP is the same as Magnum) is made in China. They are anything but the same engine. Personally, I like Magnum better.

I have read of epoxylite before. Your finished results have made the process look easy. I know better. Thanks for the tip.
That is s weet deal on the Magnum 52 4stroke. I want a 1.2 and/or maybe a 1.8. RC wings will know why.

Shortly before retiring mine, I planted it in a tree from what you describe. I had the 13X4 prop on it with the Super Tigre 51. The thing was hanging out pretty decent. I was trying to let it slide backwards (down) a little. Had so much rudder and elevator in it to hold the thing in place, the plane finally said....ENOUGH.....Man, I had never seen that thing go into such a violent snap in my life. By the time I and it figured out where it was going we found a tree. Lucky for me the only damage was a little covering rash and took out one of the N-struts. Had to go get a ladder to get it out of the tree though.

Thread has been a little too quiet. Suspect everyone is busy with other things over the summer to be inside building. Well, I did a little work tonight....hinged and fitted both ailerons. Now need to work on the control horns and servo hatches. Received my long awaited new carb for the ST51. The stock Supertigre carb did not fit under the cowl to my liking, as well as I needed a replacement carb for an older engine in another plane. So snagged the stock carb and put it on an old COMO, (now it runs good) and ordered a new Perry carb for the new ST51 in the SMP and it fits very nicely under the hood! Just need a small hole to access the high speed needle, and will make removal of the cowl much easier and look much cleaner. May get a little bit more done this week.....

Every once in a while I peek in at this thread, it's nice to see it still so active! Building the Smith was the most enjoyable modeling experience I've had yet. Last week I uncrated my Smith after 2 years in storage. It sure is good to have 'er back in the hangar! I just purchased Sig's 1/5-scale J3 Cub kit, and I'll be using the Robart Cub gear, and a Saito 90TS for power. This'll be my winter project; am I looking forward to it!
SPEED51J, your finish work is great- love the good cowl work with the Magnum hanging out. I've never used one, but hear good things. Are the weights comparable, or do they run heavier than the O.S.? Also, do you have a color scheme in mind?

Just now started to cover the Smith. I'm using sig koverall and going to paint with sig dope. Dianna cream and light blue. I have had several magnum engines and have never had any problems with them.

I'm really curious on how it balances.
I bought a kit. I was going to build it, and use electric power, but I thought it'd end up really tail heavy.. being so short nosed and all...
I ended up giving the kit away.
But seing it built.. makes me rethink my decision.. and maybe get another kit.
