Default Aero Works 28% Edge 540 Build

I started my 50cc Edge 540 last night. It is an Aero Works Edge 540 and after dealing with some minor probems on shipping, I did 90% of the fuse. The people seem very nice to deal with. I was sent the wrong sized stab tube and within 2 days the right one was at my door. The plane so far is go together nicely and the only reason I stopped was the ca ran out. Here are some pics for anyone thinking of building one of these or similar.

Good one Tom.
Been looking at this kit myself. My only concern is cutting the foam parts with the limited tools I have
Take plenty of pics and if you would give a RTF weight. Looking foward to a flight report.

Today I put in the engine box sides, lateral landing gear supports, landing gear plate, and stringers for the bottom of the plane. I also started to install the removable hatch by attaching the canopy floor the the forward hatch. So far so good. However, being that this is my first 50cc plane, I do not know which way the firewall is supposed to tilt for the engie thrust. I looked on the website and it appears as if when you are looking at the front of the firewall the right side will protrude farther out then the left. I do not know if this is correct so, I am not going to glue the engine box becuase I can remove the sides if need be. Here are the pics for today.

Engine thrust:

Engines need to be mounted with right thrust. That means the firewall will stick out further on the left side. (if your sitting in the cockpit)

Most of the time, the motorbox sides will be different lengths. The left side will be longer than the right side. That way, when you mount the firewall, it's angled the right amount.

Then you offset the engine to the left when you mount it and the angle of the firewall kicks the front of the engine back over to the right so that it lines up in the center of the cowl.

Okay, so you got your firewall in and it's got 2 or 3 degrees offset in it. Now how do you mount the engine? If you mount the engine right in the center of the firewall, it's not going to line up with the center of the cowl. []

You have to mount the engine LEFT of center. But, how much? Thats easy. Figure out how far it will be from the firewall to the back of the prop hub when the model is finished. The engine mount needs to be figured into this. The engine will most likely not be directly mounted to the firewall. You'll be using a nylon mount or some aluminum standoffs. You need the TOTAL distance from the FIREWALL all the way out to the back of the prop. Give yourself 1/8" or 3/16" clearence between the prop and the cowl out front.

So, lets say the distance from the firewall too the prop is going to be 6". All you do is get a piece of typing paper. Draw two parallel lines 6" apart and all the way across the paper. Now draw a perpendicular line across both of the other two lines. Now get a protractor and measure off 2 degrees to the right on the top line. The distance from the 90 degree mark to your 2 degree mark over is the amount of offset you need on the motor.

If the distance between the 90 degree mark and the 2 degree mark is 1/4", then you just find the centerline of your firewall and then make a mark 1/4" to the left. Thats where you center the engine.

Thanks very much. I thought it looked right, but I did not know for sure. That is great info because the biggest plane I currently fly is a 60 sized Corsair. This will be my first larger airplane and I have had no experience with a gas engine. That is a great set of pictures, now all I have to do is come up with the 700 dollars or so for the DA-50 and pipe. Thanks again for the info.

Buy your engine standoffs all the same length. The angle comes from the firewall being glued in at 2 degrees offset. [sm=thumbs_up.gif]

Well I got the engine box glued and reinforced and so did the canopy hatch. Also got the wing leading edges and tips glued on. Now I just have to sand all the parts to the curve of the various surfaces.

Looking good Tom.
Let me know how you cut out the controls.

I did not get to much done tonight. Got the hatch sanded and the former for the rear of the hatch and front of the turtle deck glued in. Also, glued the leading edges on the elevator, and rudder in preparation for sanding. Slyder, I will let you know what I am going to use for cutting the control surfaces because aside from sanding the wings, elevator, and rudder, this what will be done this weekend.

I had to cut the ailerons out from the wing structure. There were lines drawn on the surface of the wings. However, you must be careful becuase the reference lines are only drawn on one side and if you cut one side all the way through, the opposite side will not be straight. I took a pin and used their reference marks, poked the pin all the way through the wing then cut one side half way through, then moved to the other side. The first aileron came out not perfect but I think it will be ok. Here is a pic of how I did the marking on the stab. Definitely do not cut all the way through the surfaces from one side, they will come out slanted. Here are the pics for today. I got the wings sanded, the ailerons cut, and the inside edge of the wings capped.
