Well the new project is underway! It's the CGM Sukhoi, My Father got me for christmas (I was a good boy All year! lol) and I picked my self up a Brand Spankin new Super Tigre G-2300. I've only been able to steel a few hours so far but this weekind has BUILD TIME written all over it! T this point I've got the stab built and one Elevator, but I plan to have the tail finished today.
Here are some pics of the stab and elevator so far, And there will be more to come!

Well got the tail finished, and started construction on the wing. I whent to theHobby shop and got some 5/64"x 4"x 36" Sheeting to put on the leading edge. I did'nt like the idea of edge glued sheeting in the highest stess area of the wing, With the 4" sheeting there will just be alittle bit to fit near the center section, where it is completly glued to the spar.
Here are some more pics, of the rudder. Will post pics of the wing in the next day or so.

guerra, Great looking plane.
Ive just about made it through the wing, only got the left aileron to cut out and glue the hinge block in. then it is on to the fuse.

I'm gettin further along, its been fun so far. have the wing finished all but glassing the center section, so I decided to frame up the fuse. got a few pics of it going together and with the wing and tail PINED to the fuse, so if it looks a little crooked its okay just t-pins.

RE: Another Carl Goldberg Sukhoi Build
Ive made a little progress hte last few days, I invested a lot of time in the gear blocks, I made 18 gussets! and used system T-88 FAA approved 24 hour epoxy. I mounted the wing with 1/4-20 bolts instead of the 6-32 bolts supplied. also got the engine box glued up and I am about ready to mount the engine. But tonight I think I'll gule the tail in finally and put the decks on.
Here are some more pics!

Great job Bipeguy, you are a very fast builder I’ am very impressed, I noted your Ultimate on the bench and some other planes around, I d’ like to know about your other planes too. Congratulations for this project. I also have noted that you will use a SuperTigre engine (Great Engines).
Keep going and posting pictures, Thank you.

Seems like I'm the last of the glue slingers. All the threads I see show photos of nice smooth sheeting, mine all show where I flow the CA. Nice job!! Never enough Sukhoi builds.
I have the CGM Extra on my bench right now. Just waiting for the motor mount so I can get going on the fuse. It's an old kit but other then the landing gear they come with it's A great and easy build. I did get the fiberglass cowl and pants for it though and bought the after market landing gear.
My Sukhoi was built from plans but has A lot of the same methods as the CG kit, just A bit bigger and I designed it for gas.
Keep the photos coming!!

RE: Another Carl Goldberg Sukhoi Build
Last night I started in to the long drawn out stages of the build. About 95% done and 95% to go. I started installing the radio, and I used the try provided. I just re-infoced it on the back side and made it removable, by sliding it into a slot towards the aft of the fuse and screws in the front. I also mounted the engine and I fit the belly pan.
I have a Fiberglass cowl comming from Fiberglass specialties, and I am just goin to use the sock plassic belly pan that came with the kit. But that flimsy plastic cowl will be good for somthing, I'm going to use it as a template, so I make sue I only have to cut the fiber Glass one once.
I've also got to order a few things from tower, a tank, tires, pilot, connectors, and so on. But I also need to get a Ball bearing servo for the rudder.
Ill take some more pics tonight

RE: Another Carl Goldberg Sukhoi Build
Hi tom1178,
Thanks for the complement. Finally made enough progress to take some more pics. The build has slowed down a bit recently, I've been feeling a little under the weather, but my Tower order should be here tomorrow and the weekend will be full of build time.
I've got the decks on and I have started radio install, got the ailerons pre rigged and the started making the rudder cables.
alfredbmor, I also put a pic of my Scratch built .25 size hots up. My first scatch build, and it's how I do park flying. I put up some more pics of my other planes up on a later date.

Thanks for the pics Bipeguy, as I can see you are practically ready for covering, do you have in mind a particular trim?

Gray beard, Yeah that gear came with the kit. I'm quite impressed with it, heck the kit even came with the axels! Although the tires in the pics are not the right size I just stuck on what ever I had in the shop to take the pic.
As for the covering, I still Have some work to do yet. I am the type of builder that finishes the plane, I mean Get to were the only thing grounding it is the covering, then I take it apart and cover it. I got about a week or two before Before I get really fired up about covering it.
Here is the trim scheam I have in mind, I took it off a yack I saw in Model Airplane News.

I do the same thing, get it all together, put it on the CG machine then do the covering. Get's me real close to flight ready. I have three sheets of different planes on my bench and plan on incorporating the different covering patterns on this Extra. It may come out looking like the Wild Hare 80 inch YAK in different colors though, they really did A nice job and I like the pattern.

Well Iv'e been making slower process on the plane. I've pretty much got the ship rigged, with all the servos in it and all the push rods made. I am in probubly my favorite part of the build, doing all the little things that make the plane your own.
Here are a couple pics of what I have done lately, does'nt look like much but it's still movin right along.

I'm at about the same point with the Extra I'm building and haven't picked up the tail whel yet. This is the first time I have seen anyone set one up like you have, great idea. I can't see in the photo how or what you have the ball link going to from the tiller on the TWA. Does it connect to the rudder itself? [:-]

RE: Another Carl Goldberg Sukhoi Build
Ive connected it to the steering arm that came with the TWA. But Ive have also in the past connected it to the back side of the control horn for the rudder. Sorry about the bad pic I didn't relize the black nylon of the steering arm blends in to the shadows in the back ground till now.
I'll take some more detailed pics if you are intrested.

RE: Another Carl Goldberg Sukhoi Build
For what it's worth, be sure to add tail bracing. Sullivan makes a great tail bracing kit that will go a long way to keeping the tail on your airplane. I flew a friend's Goldberg Sukhoi and during a split S, flutter in the tail caused the elevator servo to give away its gear teeth, so you know what happened then . I scratch built a Sukhoi from MAN plans, using an OS 1.20 pumper. As I tend to engineer things to death sometimes, I put in a lot of high quality wood in places I thought were necessary. Also used two elevator servos, both metal geared. Well, on the second flight after a beautiful split S down to around a 15 foot pass across the deck, the right side stab/el separated from the fuselage, then the left hand side went next. I had even used Coverite for added strength. The plane wasn't over-engined and wasn't over-weight, but like the Goldberg, it seems to have had some turbulence problems over the stab. So, if I built one again, I would add the tail bracing. Come to think of it, there's another Sukhoi tail mounted in the position of "honor" on our clubhouse. Maybe he had a similar problem [&o]. It's a great plane, very aerobatic, and a very graceful flyer. I'm sure you'll enjoy yours. Lee

RE: Another Carl Goldberg Sukhoi Build
I have seen many on board videos and you can't believe how amazingly the tail parts flutter, you just can't note this when you are flying but for sure it is happening sometimes not so bad, sometimes really bad. Great Idea.

Bipe, I'm heading to the LHS today and picking up the items I need to get this Extra finished or close to it. I got A couple of ideas from your photos for tail wheel control from you already but you may want to get some good shots and post them. I'm sure I'm not the only one that liked your system better then just using springs and cables.
My Sukhoi is also from MAN plans by Sirianni but I changed things around and installed A Brison 2.4 gas engine. I used some big tri stock and then shaped it under the stab so it blends. Also beefed up the mounting flat with ply and have small dowls that I epoxyed through the stab and mount then made up some braces out of 4-40 rod and clevises. It still flapps around A lot from the vibration on the ground so I'm sure it isn't any better in the air but I did all I could do. So far no problems but it's always on my mind.

RE: Another Carl Goldberg Sukhoi Build
Gray Beard, mine was Sirianni's Sukhoi also. Although I used the best balsa I could get for the leading and trailing edges of the stab (and sheet stock), it just fractured (on both sides) right outside of the fuselage. If I built again I would use Spruce and add tail bracing. For some reason the Sukhois have a lot of turbulence at the stab and I think if we saw it in flight it would be really scary [X(]. Keep an eye on that area. I'm really sorry that I lost mine; it was a great flyer. Lee
