Tell you how good the Great Planes Extra is......
I have been looking to buy one for a while now. I posted in the KITS for sale/wanted forum that I wanted one. NOBODY replied. Apparently everyone that has one likes it.

I flew my GP extra on it's maiden flight today. I put a saito 91 on it and it was awesome. Engine pulls it straight up. I haven't had any other extra kits, but wow, this plane is awesome, flys like it's on rails. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Goldberg is great too, but from what I'm told doesn't buld quite as easily. It also needs a 1.20 four stroke to get unlimited performance. The GP is slightly smaller but still looks big.

60 size Extra
I would go for the GP Extra! I just recently finished mine and absolutly love it. Building it takes a bit of patients but it is all worth it at the end. This plane took about 5 months of off and on working and came out better than expected. I opted for the OS 1.20 Surpass III (Pumped) and it seems to be the perfect combination. Unquestionable power and excellent downline braking. I am currently running a 16X6 prop and it seems a good match. I did move 2 servos to the tail for balance and it created a perfectly balanced plane with NO lead. The radio receiver and battery are mounted in the radio compartment and no serious modifications were needed. The receiver is in front of the radio tray and the battery is at the back of the radio tray. Also added were pull pull cables (In the stock tubes) and a fiberglass cowl. The receiver antenna was installed in one of the tubes for the stock elevator rods that were not used due to the tail mounted servos. I also added about an inch to the elevator halves and rudder. Great building and even better flying plane.

By the way, http://www.********.net/forums/showt...?threadid=1198 has a lot of talk about this plane and has a basic review/pictoral of the construction.

Here is a shot of the radio stuff
Just though you would like to see the radio stuff. Very easy to work on due to the large radio compartment. I just added rails/trays for the receiver/servos/battery. Simple foam and velcro straps hold everything in place. On the receiver plate I added a hole with a rubber grommet to minimise the chances of wire chafing. This pic is before I tied up all the loose wires but you can still get the idea of how easily and clean everything goes in.
The left side of the pic is towards the tail end of the plane.

Tail Servo Setup
Here is the tail servo mod. I just made removable hatches to allow access to that section of the plane. I didn't know how it would balance so it seemed important at the time. If I were to build another I would just glue the hatches in and cover it over but I am still happy with the results.
The servo arms are now aluminum but the plastic ones were used for sizing the carbon fiber rods.

Last one, the BUSINESS end!
Just a shot of the engine installation. Plenty of room for anything you want. The gray tube is the throttle rod. Looks like a big plane with that motor box! and it is a big plane when compared to a 40 size.
Also visible is the polished landing gear. As you can tell I did a lot of extra stuff and took my time. I'm sure this plane can be built much faster than 5 months but I like to have everything perfect and once I saw this plane coming together I was even more determined to do my best. I still need the final decals but it still flys great without them!

Decisions
I'd like to hear from someone who has built and flown the CG 60 Extra 300. Its a mid wing. So these are two different planes. Has anyone had a chance to fly both? I'm torn between the GP and the CG. I will be using a 2cy .90 in the one I build.

Good News
Hands down! Good to hear as I already have this kit and was thinking of selling it and going with the CG. How about any mods to lighten the plane or increase the control surfaces?

Mods
I didn't make any weight based mods to the plane but I did add some to the elevator and to the rudder. I added about an inch to both and they came out well. For the elevator I just extended the inner edge back about 1" then connected that line to the stock location of the outer elevator half. For the rudder I simply extended the lower edge and inch and connected that line to the stock top edge. By keeping the enlarged portions closer to the fuse I minimised the chance of adding issues such as roll coupling in knife edge flight. If the rudder gets too big at the top it will want to roll the plane out in KE. The plane performs flawlessly with minimal coupling as I built it. Great flying airplane!!!

Thanks for the response. I think I will follow your advise. Is that the Dubro pull/pull system I see in the pic of your "radio stuff"? Also I don't see any stabilizer struts on your model. I have read some posts saying this model needs them. Any thoughts on that. Can anyone recommend a kit?

Pull-Pull Kit
I used the Du-Bro 4-40 Pull-Pull kit on mine. I really like the cable because it is almost maintenence free. The cable doesnt seem to stretch and has a plastic coating on it to prevent wear. As for the flying wires on the tail I opted not to install them. I have read that some people reccomend them while others have been fine without them. I am running a motor in the upper end of power and I feel safe without them. The tail seems plenty stong. I did prop it with a 16X6 prop so there is not a lot of excess speed. Downlines are slow and full throttle doesn't pull the plane too fast, Prefect for aerobatics!

CG is a mid wing with stalling speed less than a LT-45, as published with in 20 month ago in a mag.-
It is though to build right and the wing sheeting may be thicker but the reward is great, it flys good and lands easy, a 60 2-s will start the fun and certanly a saito 100 will continue it, I personaly have a YS 120 on mine wich will be ready with in 30 days, I have seen other 3 on a 75 2-s, 91 2-s and 120 4-s configurations all are great fliers.
THE GP is a low wing, I have flown the 46 and is just as noble but a little more tricky at landings.- I think it is easier to build though!!

extra 300
As you can already tell, if you ask six people about a plane you will get six different opinions. I have owned both the GP Extra and five CG Extra 300's. I had a saito 91 on the GP and it flew great. The Goldberg 300's had different engines, but usually four stroke 120's. Personally, I prefer the Goldberg. Its a little bigger, it does not require any mods to fly well, and its easier to put on and take off the wing since it is a mid-wing. If you have already started the GP kit, make the Goldberg your next kit to build. You won't be sorry. Thanks

I built the GP 40 extra for my third kit it went together well I used a 70 Surpass for power and I loved it. Flew it for three years. Retired last season due to lots of flight time. I am currently building the CG Extra to replace it and I hope it flys as well as it looks. I can't compare the flight characteristics but the GP builds easier. I think the Goldberg looks better.
