Default Goldberg Kit Question Falcon 3

Hi guys. I have a question about the kit i'm building. I have the Carl Goldberg Falcon III and on the Horizontal Stabilizer the instructions say to "drill a 1/16" hole at each of the 12 locations" but I dont see on the plans where those holes are supposed to go.There is 6 hinge points on the T.E. so do they want me to drill a hole on the top and back of the T.E at each of the hinge points? I could see doing that for gluing I guess. Any help is appreciated. Jasonv

My guess is they want small holes drilled into each rib which will minimize the ballooning effect in the hot sun when individual rib bays are effectively sealed off from each other. If there are 12 ribs in the stab that would be it.

It will take 12 holes to mount 6 hinge points. 6 in the trailing edge of the stabilizer and 6 in the leading edge of the elevator.

The model uses nylon hinges so I have cut the slots already for them but it also calls for the 1/16" holes to be drilled. The holes in the ribs makes sense to keep the ribs from ballooning. I looked at the plans again and it almost looks like the holes are drilled in the center of the hinge slots on the back of the T.E. and the top of the T.E. above the hinges. Would they do that so the glue wicks into the slot?

Is this the hinge you have? If so it needs the holes drilled for the 'barbs'.

Current CG kits have CA hinges. If thats what you have then the hole is drilled in the center of the hinge slot so the CA will wick in better. It is drilled the same direction as the slot not perpendicular to it.

here is a how-to on CA hinges. It shows where the holes are supposed to be in the first pictures. It is for wicking CA deep into the hinge for maximum bonding.
