If you only have one kit under your belt so far, I would limit your modifications, everything you do outside of the original design is going to be very time consuming.

Hey Eugn,
I ordered the cowl from fiberglass specialties. Read about them here and just did a search with Google for them.
Here's a pic someone else posted here of the cowl.

A friend of mine built this plane and one modification he did was cut the canopy into a windshield about an inch or so high. gave the plan a very cool look

Hey Minn, LOL, actually those aren't my pics! I got them off of here from a thread Downwind started where someone else posted them. I've got mine on order, but haven't gotten it in yet.
I think it was still December when he posted it!
Nice eyes!

Hi Dave,
I ordered it from Fiberglass Specialties. Here's the link to their catalog.
Fiberglass Specialties
Just scroll down and you'll see the cowl listed by kit for the Sig Four Star 60. It costs like $35 plus shipping. I think the total cost was $43. Takes about 2 weeks to receive.
Pretty cool cowl, huh?

Oh, I think I'm gonna mount it inverted. Waiting to receive the cowl and the engine to play around with it, but I'm pretty sure I'll go inverted.

I'm gonna go with a pitts style muffler so that I don't have to cut it up much at all. Or that's the plan.
Yeah, I was blown away by the selection he has. From what I've read, if he doesn't have your kit listed, you can send him some copies of the 3 views from the plans and he can usually find something that will fit it perfect.
I have no clue on painting the cowl. I'm curious if monocote or ultracote adhere to fiberglass very well. I was thinking if so, I could just cover the cowl, too, for a dead match.
Anybody covered a cowl before, or am I just gonna HAVE to buy an airbrush and get some paint mixed?

Woo hoo!!! Started the build last night. Shaved 3/32" off the W4 & W5 ribs top and bottom to the main spar and deepened the four cutouts for the front spars 3/32" on W3, W4, & W5 ribs so that I can sheet the leading edge of the wing to the main spar.
I held the W5 rib up the the W3 rib and lined up the front spar cutouts. Then cut the W3 to match the depth of the W5. Then, I lined up the leading and trailing edges of the two ribs and cut the W5 to match the W3 back the the cutouts for the main spar. Used this modified W5 as a template to cut the rest of the W4 and W5 ribs. Rubber banded them all together and sanded them so they match perfectly. Then, started to assemble the wings as outlined in the instructions.
Man, I LOVE those web spars! Lines up everything perfect!
Will post pics soon, I have been recording the steps, in case someone else wants to copy it.

Heath,What type of tailwheel is the Sullivan unit? If you want to jazz your plane up some, check out the leaf-spring style brackets out there. I put a Sig unit on my Midwest Extra and it looks fantastic!

Here's a pic of it
Here's a pic of the sullivan tailwheel.
I almost have the wings done. I've been taking pics along the way that I will post. Had a motherboard meltdown on my home computer, so unable to post from home until the replacement comes in.
Anyway, here's the sullivan set-up.

Heath,
I'm getting close to finishing my second four star and have bought the same sullivan tailwheel assy. Are you going to use the smaller or larger spring?

I don't know. I'm still finishing the wings now and haven't really even examined the wheel assembly well enough to know that I had that choice to make!!
Others here have used this wheel, I wonder what they used?
Anyone?

4star
Hi all, Those were my pic's of the 4 star in the bones! Quite shocking to see my kitchen on the INTERNET! I created a tank hatch on the bottom of the fuse. The plywood cheeks need to be removed, and the fuse bottom shortened to install the cowl. I will include some pic's of this modification.
first i added some bass wood rails to the inside of the fuse for the tank floor to be attached to from the bottom!

Nice work on the hatch.
Hmm. So you're going sideways. I was kinda leanin' towards inverted as I would just like to have the head sticking out of the bottom rather than spoil the side of such an awesome cowl. Haven't decided, yet. Still got time to mull that over.
Did you use the stock control linkages? I bought a pull-pull system to check it out and am considering it. But I really don't see any difference in the stock nylon pushrods and goldenrods. I'm having trouble understanding why some suggest the switch, they look exactly the same.
What'd you use for your linkages?

COWL
Hi I all ready had the blind nuts epoxied in before the cowl arrived. Or I would have mounted my saito inverted. if I don't split the cowl into two pieces, I'm going to have to cut a larger hole in the side to get the cowl over the installed engine. I went with Sullivan 440 wire push rods and guide tubes.
