Great Planes 40 Mustang
I just aquired a GP 40 size Mustang kit that I
am going to start soon. I am thinking of using a
Super Tiger 51 for power and and I think I will
put retracts on it also.
Can anyone share their experience with this
kit? I understand it is a good flyer and looks
to be of typical GP good quality but is there
anything I should look out for?
Thanks for any info..

GP Mustang
I just started this kit this week and its a fast builder. My fuse is to the point of mounting the wing and I have one half of the wing built and am starting the second half tomorrow. I purchased a Thunder Tiger pro .46 for mine with a brison in cowl muffler. Its a fun scale plane so I am gonna mount the engine sideways with the head sticking out the side of the cowl. Hopefully it will be ready to fly in about 2 weeks, 3 at max, depends on the work schedule.
Good Luck,
Warren

Great Planes 40 Mustang
Hi Sam,
I'm building one now. I'm also using a G51 w/Bisson Pitts. I'm installing Dave Brown Pro South mechanical retracts. They take a little time to get right!
I have one wing mostly built and got to the retract installation. It's time-consuming. I finally got it mounted and the wire bent so it works without binding, but when retracted and locked, it's too far down in the well; I won't be able to mount the gear doors. So, it's back to the wire bending again. I wish my vice was closer to my building bench!
The kit seems like an easy builder, with the typical high-quality Great Planes instruction book and decent wood. Everyone says this airplane is a fantastic flyer. I'm anxious to complete the kit and for spring to arrive!
Good luck with your GP Mustang.

Retracts
Thanks for the replys guys ...
Bob: Let me know how the retract installation
goes. I have ordered a set of GP 40 size retracts
for mine. This will be the first set to install
for me.
I agree Warren that it looks like an easy
build. I also will mount my engine sideways with
a Slimline pitts muffler.
Are you guys using the abs cowl or going with
a fiberglass replacement? Is there a fg available?
I hope to get started this weekend....
Good luck

Does the GP P-51 use 2 aileron servos or just one.... I want to know cause I want to use flapperons for it so i don't have to come in as fast.

GP Mustang
The GP Mustang uses 1 aileron servo with 2 torque rods. I was gonna build flaps and make it more scale , but its not worth the extra weight. I am gonna set up flaperons instead even though I am not sure it really needs them. I will save the scale detail for my TF Corsair and my 1/4 scale BUsa cub, both of which are on the table along with the mustang. To many projects, and not enough time. Also, in my kit there is a form to order a fiberglass replacement cowl from Kitty Hawk Models. I bought my kit from a private seller and the box was beat up looking and ruff, and the directions have a print date from 1983, but I am not syre how old the actual kit is. The box has the red white and blue stripes on it and the decals are for the sweet thing which is the same as the kits nowadays.
The info for Kitty Hawk Models is:

Thanks Warren:
I also found that Fiber Glass Specialties
makes a cowl for this kit. It is just the bottom
of the nose piece or a replacement for the one
that comes in the kit. Sounds like you have the
same kit I do....
darkmask: It would be easy to put aileron
servos in the wing for the option of flaperons.
I think I am going to use just one servo on mine
however.
I can relate to having too many projects. I have just decided I am going to buckel down and
see this one through to the end because I really
want to fly it.

A good web site too...

Aileron servo
the single as per plans is more than sufficient. I built one with a fp 60 on the front and dave brown retracts. lands nice and slow ,flies like its on rails you will like it. Mine came out 6.5 pounds rtf, has no bad habits.

Great airplane. Built mine about 6 or 7 years ago. Has retracts and a Saito 91 for power. Very fast. One servo on the ailerons works just fine. Lands easy (probably due to the ultra sport wing) I left the gear doors off because the gear was down in the grooves too far. They aren't recessed anyway. A lot of fun to fly.

I've been flying one with an OS 70FS for over a year and I fly it like a pattern plane. It has few bad habits (snap, stall, etc) like other warbirds. It does land pretty hot without flaps though.
Good Luck
