Here are the latest pictures from my build. I think the covering is done...for now anyway! Just need to hinge the ailerons, add wheel pants, find a pilot, glue the canopy on, and install the Magnum Pro .45 and radio gear. -Craig

MAIDEN FLIGHT!!
Well I finished this plane in September of 2007 and finally got around to flying it! After a warm up flight on my old trusty Contender, I fueled her up, fired up the OS 46AX, set the needle a little rich and headed out to the runway. Hit the throttle and the tail lifted in about 10 feet. About 20 feet later, she was up! A click or two of left aileron and she was flying straight and true. No other trim was needed. A couple laps around the field and she was bringing back fond memories of my last Sunbird that I had many years ago. I did a few snaps and spins..Fun as ever. Being so short coupled makes it really like to do wild snaps! After about 5 or 6 minuts of messing around, I lined up for a landing. I guess my idle was too low because the engine died about 10 feet off the ground. Luckly my aproach was fine, just a little off center so all was well after a bounce or two. To sum it all up, Its not a pattern plane, its not a 3D plane, it doesn't fly really smoothly but it does do some cool things. It knife edges very well and doesn't pitch or roll with rudder. It rolls very straight. It flys inverted well with very little down elevator. Because its so short, it doesn't track very well and needs attention whenever trying smooth, large, pattern style manuvers. But the trade off is, as I said, it does GREAT snap manuvers. Flat spins are unbelievable!! All in all, just a fun all around sport plane.

I actually have one of GM precisions Planes, called the Rainbow Runner..  I have the fuse framed up, and one wing panel framed up, but have yet to complete it...  I build kinda slowly, I only started this kit about 10 years ago!!!  Maybe I need to get it going again!

Craig
You will love the Rainbow Runner. It flys much like an Ultra Sport only with a lighter wing loading. I built a 20 size about 10 rears ago and powered it with an OS FP40 and it flew great! I still have a 40 size that I have set up as my float plane. If and when you finish yours, you might want to upgrade the elevator linkage to something more stiff. We had problems with elevator flutter in the past. My fix was to simply connect the two elevators together with a stiff wire AND use the Y-shaped pushrod

Any chance anyone has a set of sunbird plans they're willing to part with? A kit + plans would be good too

Opps, sorry, copy of my earlier post!! Never mind!! Although I didn't mention previously that I also have an Airtronics JetFire 40, fuse built up, and a Balsa USA North Star completely framed up, all started 10 - 20 Years ago.. I guess you could say that I have a problem with following through!! I guess that answers my question as to would I be able to build a full scale Kit Plane.... Yes, I could do it, But would I follow through to completion???? Probably not!! Sigh!!

I know this is an old thread but why not keep it going? It took me all of 3 months to build, probably about 15-20hrs/week, but she's finally done. Very simple build, and the final product is very rewarding. Haven't maidened yet but will soon. Hope everyone else is still flying theirs.

Picture taken on an old cell phone, I apologize if blurry
