RE: Top Flite Cessna 182 build
Dansdeals,
Not sure if a full pilot will fit in the Cessna. It has servos mounted part-way into the cockpit, you can tell from the cockpit kit that it sticks out past the panel. I need to look at mine again, it has been sitting for more than a year while I try to figure out how to re-do the servo tray while maintaining the strength it provides.

Being excited to fly -AND- wanting to make a very nice looking scale bird are two incompatible emotions, I have found. A painted finish takes a lot longer than iron on covering. I imagine the cockpit kit and a pilot will be time consuming too.
Just my two cents.

RE: Top Flite Cessna 182 build
A while back I asked if anyone on this thread had ever used a Saito 1.00 twin and how they mounted it.
For anyone who might be interested I thought I would post what I came up with.
What I used are Evolution 45mm plus 7mm engine standoffs plus a piece of 1/4" plywood. This should give me the total 6 1/4" between the firewall and the spinner back plate.
The LHS told me that there shouldn't be any problems with torque on the standoffs. I guess we'll see.
I also used a flex cable for the throttle control and mounted a Futaba 3001 servo for it in the standard location.
At this point I'm not sure if this engine will be totally enclosed but it appears to be close except for the needle valves.

Mustang, good idea! I was builing a palsa and ply system for my engine to offset it from the firewall. But I'm going to order some of those standoffs and give that a try. I think it will be alot stronger and lighter. Thanks for the info!

RE: Top Flite Cessna 182 build
Glad to help, Robbie.
If you are using the Saito 100 twin like I am you will find that it just barely fits the firewall top to bottom.
The mounting bolts have to come from the inside to mount the standoffs and careful consideration was given to remarking and drilling the holes.
I used 1 1/4" bolts to come through the firewall, 7mm standoff, and into the 45mm standoff. Then I used the 3/4" bolts that came with the 45mm standoffs to go through the engine backplate and 1/4" plywood into the 45mm standoffs.
I custom built "washers" to fit on the inside of the firewall just to give a little extra strength to where the bolts go through.
Glad to see someone else is still building! This thread had gone silent for a while.
Keep in touch and let us know how your build is going!

Mustang: How does the cowl fit with the Saito 100? My guess is that you need to make holes in the cowl or can the saito 100 be completly hidden?

RCer,
I am not completely sure how much of the engine will be concealed. I plan to get the fiberglass cowl and wheel pants from Fiberglass Specialties but haven't done that yet (waiting to see how good I've fooled Santa this year). I'm pretty sure the needle valves will stick out above the cowl but not sure if I will need to make holes for the valve covers. Judging by the plans, I'd say it is going to be very close.

RE: Top Flite Cessna 182 build
Mustang, I am going to go with the standoff method to mount my engine. I have the 90TS, so I need to mount it forward 35mm. The 38mm standoff Evolution sales will be too long, unless somebody knows that it would work ok? I dont know if being 3mm too long would be a problem with the front of the engine protruding?
But I was thinking of going with the 7mm mount added to the 20mm mount, and then adding a 1/4" plywood to get the length I need. The Evo website doesnt explain much, so did the 7mm standoff you purchased come with the mounting screws to put it on the firewall, and was the standoff threaded?
I am worried, not really so much that the 20mm does not come with screws (which isnt a big deal), but that the standoff isnt threaded but simply a tube. I guess I could run a 2" screw down them and the engine to hold it in place if needed.
Thanks
-Robbie

RE: Top Flite Cessna 182 build
Robbie,
The 45mm standoffs I got are threaded on both ends, either 10-28 or 10-32 threads (I can't remember which) and came with 4 bolts 3/4" long. The 7mm standoffs are hollow and came with a spacer inside that fit the bolts going through. The other bolts that I used (1 1/4" long) came from my local True Value hardware store.
Also, a conversion chart I found:
in X 25.4 = mm
or
mm X .039 = in
Hope this helps.

One more idea, Robbie, for what it's worth,
If you do like you are thinking, with the 7mm and 20mm standoffs and 1/4" ply...
Epoxy a layer of 1/16 ply to the 1/4" ply and that should get you very close to the 35mm you need.

RE: Top Flite Cessna 182 build
Thanks for the wealth of info you have provided on your TF Cessna build. I have completed the majority of my build with more or less the same issues and obstacles as everyone else. Where I could use some suggestions or ideas is in the area of the electronics. Specifically with the routing and connections of the wing servos and lighting wiring so as to obtain as easy as possible wing to fuselage assembly while keeping it all secluded from cockpit view. I was thinking of maybe making a tray for the wiring to lay in or possibly even cutting a recessed area under the center of the wing for it. Anyway I would appreciate your ideas or what solution you had.
thanks
Roger

That is a good question Roger. I was wondering the same myself. Also, does anybody have any suggestions for mounting the electronics? I have a Sullivan onboard glow driver for the saito twin, charging jacks, and the radio switches, but I cant figure out where to put them. I have thought about building a hatch for access. I do plan on installing the scale cockpit, so I dont know if mounting everything on the servo tray would be worth while, if removing the cockpit is going to be a pain to just turn the thing on.

Looks nice.
Really surprised to see that you didn't open up the upper cowl inlets. Any particular reason? I see that you opened the lower center in front of the engine's inverted cylinder.
Just seems to me that you'd want as much cooling air as possibe, and it would look more scale also, which is a big reason people build this plane.
Looks good though.

Hey Deadeye, did making that hatch in the luggage door location interfere with the top-flite interior kit? Do you have any photos of the inside if so? It looks good though and its in a scale location.
Thanks
