Hey everyone, I have currently started building a SIG 1/4 scale cub kit and I am converting it into an L-4. This is my first kit build and I am only 16 years old. I am going to make this a build thread so all of you can see what I am doing and to give advice as well. I have just finished the horizontal stab. and I am working on the elevator now. I will post pictures of the elevator tomorrow when I finish it.

Finished up the elevators today. They are ready to be sanded now.

Got the rudder glued and sanded today. Making pretty good progress. Hopefully it wont slow down

Are you using CA?

Is that wax paper on top of the plans?

I'm starting a Birdi Old Timer. It will be my first build also.

Yes, I am using slow CA for all of the parts so far, and yes, that is also wax paper that has been put over the plans. So far the building has gone very smoothly. I am enjoying every minute of it. It has been pretty simple too so that makes it fun for a first build.. At least thats what I think

CubNut, I have seen and followed your build thread many times, and I really like your C/W Cub, especially that paint scheme. There really is some good tips in your thread as well.

I didnt get to do anything on the cub tonight, so no progress report. I need to get a bigger building board! This thing is alot bigger than I expected.

oh yeah, CubNut, what size fuel tank are you using?

If I remember right it is a 14oz, I didn't want too much tank hanging back into the cockpit.
You can mount 2 smaller tanks side by side and plumb them together to get more capacity.

Ok thanks CubNut, I am planning on puting a gas engine on mine so I wont need as much of a fuel tank. Like you said, I dont want to much hanging into the cockpit either. I want to try and make the cockpit look as scale as much as I can.

Well, I havent gotten to work on the project very much lately, mostly because of school.

Hopefully I can begin working on the fuselage here pretty soon. I would much rather be building than going to school, but as usual school comes first.. ha

Well, I messed up a little bit, but not bad thank goodness. I was going to build the opening Door and follow cubmans guidelines, but I got a little ahead of my self and already finished the F5 former. I will just have to build the door according to his after thought guidelines now. Not too bad of a mess up, but It might be a little more work.

Haven't gotten much done today. Its been very VERY slow. I have alot of things for the fuselage cut and ready to be glued and will probably do some glueing either tonight or tomorrow.

Ok pictures! I have started cutting and fitting one of the sides of the fuselage. Havent glued anything yet. Hopefully I will be done with at least this side by tuesday afternoon. That's the plan at least.

Ok I have finished one side of the fuselage today and everything went along smoothly. I will start working on the right side tomorrow hopefully to incorporate the door. I have already cut out the side fuselage parts so I can start getting right to work tomorrow.

I started cutting the pieces for the right side today. I am building it right on top of the left side with wax paper in between the two sides. By doing this I will be able to get the two sides to be very identical with very little sanding required.

I will be posting some pictures by tomorrow hopefully of the completed sides. Or at least almost completed sides

The building is going much slower than I would like. I am still working on the second half of the fuselage.

It doesnt LOOK much different right now. The right side is just like the left side so you wont see anything different until I get through building the right side. I got through with fitting everything today. I will post pictures tomorrow if i dont have too much homework.

The Sig Cub is ALOT of work but you will love the plane when it is finished. Keep at it and before you now it you will enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Thanks anthony, I am really enjoying this build and taking my time.

I finished the sides of the fuselage minus the door cutout and a little sanding. Everything is coming along nicely. Anthony, What did you use to cut your door out with? I am not sure what I should use.

Have you got a razor saw? I can see the lines on the right fuse half for the door cutout; use a razor saw to cut through the sticks down to the level of the sheeting, then use your exacto knife with a good #11 blade. Don't try to cut through in one swipe, make the first cut just to establish a cut line, and then repeat through that line with a bit more pressure until it finally cuts through.
