Check the Rustoleum series, and also they have a paint (rustoleum) marketed under the name "Painters' Touch''. Good stuff, fuel proof too.

if you wanted to, you could use automotive paint, then use clear lustrecote to fuel prook the airplane. I have done several planes this way since i found that the topflite only makes several colors, and of course one color that i need they don't have.
also, if you apply your decals first, then use the clear lustrecote over the entire plane, you decals will not tend to come off as easily, and the seam is not as noticable. I have a few planes, and haven't had any problems in the long term, it also gives a great finish.

You could use Plastikote acrylic laquer from the auto parts store. Acrylic laquer is about as fuel proof as buterate dope. That is about 15% nitro raw fuel. It will also dull after a year of hard use. But you can touch it up with clear laquer during the winter.
