Default Monokote Panels Pls. Advise

I am in the final stages of a Sig 4* kit and approaching the coating phase. I want to do a white or black primary color with rounded blue transparent panels in the center of the wings. I am worried the primary color (white or black) will not adhere smoothly to the blue panels. Is there some other method I can use other than ironing on the transparent panels then the primary color? I had thought of cutting the blue panels out and placing them on the pre-cut primary color and using come Monokote trim solvent to make it stick, then ironing the whole thing on as one piece. Maby some of you who have been at it longer than me can help. Any will be appreciated,.....believe me!

Don,

That's a tough one. Normally, I don't like to attach pieces off the plane, but this case seems like a good place to do it.

The best method is to lay the pieces out on a piece of glass. MonoKote Trim solvent will be your best bet providing the base color is MonoKote (Trim solvent doesn't work on Ultracote and many other brands).

I've put two pieces of monokote together on a piece of glass. Just iron the seams. try to keep the heat away from the rest of the covering. Cut your patterns with templates made of thin cardboard. This method worked great for me on the open areas on the plane.

1st. Thx for the swift reply! So the monokote will not stick to the glass if I chose to iron the panels to the primary color? I do like the idea of the Trim applicator solvent since it is a slow process and will give me time to adjust the fit.

That is correct. Something else you may want to do is to spray the glass with a 50/50 mix of Windex and water first. Lay the panels out and squeegie out the excess.

This will do two things: First it will remove any air trapped underneath, and second, the Windex will slightly activate the adhesive so it holds firmly to the glass while you're working.

Once it is ready, you can easily peel the finished panel off the glass.

Watch out for cracking the glass with the heat of the iron!

I've done this before by ironing the transparent on, the using Trim solvent to lay the outer layer on. That would be much easier and less likely to pull apart than doing it off the plane. Next time I will probably use a mist of windex instead of trim solvent. Man, there's nothing slow about that stuff! After you squeegee the windex out, let it dry for a while and put the iron to it. Just don't use excessive heat. Darn it, can't find a picture of that plane anywhere!

Don,

You may want to buy a small can of Balsarite for covering and a small hobby paint brush from your LHS. Paint the Balsarite around the edges of the colors. It dries clear and it will protect the edges from fuel getting between them and rubbing of the edges while you clean the plane. Just my 2 cents worth.

Fly safe and have fun!!
