In theory. Might be kind of tough though as we all build at different speeds. But I guess it wouldn't matter. There would still be a bunch of us building the same plane at the same time. That's cool enough for me.

Anyone else out there see dry ground yet or have the chance to fly? With all the snow cover this winter and melt the grass and pretty much all the wifes landscaping looks like damp death warmed over. Can imagine what the flying field is like.

Man, I don't usually get to really start flying till sometime in May. Spring kinda stinks. If it's not raining, the wind is howling.

Yeah, but at least you got to maiden yours in January. We were under 3' or more of snow by then and it was still falling. Record month.

Any flights since then?

Nota one. I actually took it to the field a couple weeks ago. ( well, not to the field, but the place I go when the field is un-fly able.) and couldn't fly because there was a problem with one of the wheels binding. The right wheel was almost locked up. It's since been fixed but haven't been able to get out since. In case anyone is wondering about my alternate airfield, well, Firestone has a plant not too far from me, and there's an abandoned parking lot attached to it. I have the owners permission to fly there and they even mow me a strip down the middle in the summer months when the weeds take over. It's a great place to fly if you don't mind the occasional light post. There's not many and you get used to them. I've only hit one in the three or four years I've been going up there. Usually on a Saturday morning, I'll land to find a crowd of people up on the bank watching me fly. But , I do still mostly go the the club field when it's dry.

I don't want to say anything because it might get you upset, but I came home from the flying field with a good sunburn today. We had a really good flying day today. Temps in the 70's today made for a good flying day. We had a bunch of people at the field.

I finally got some stick time on the el skybolto. What a sweet plane. I love the way the 120 rips it.probably 6 or seven flights today until a crosswind landing bent the gear beyond field repair. That's alright though, I'm getting more comfortable with it and finding out what it's capable of. Lotsa fun.

Good Theeeeng Seeeenyorrrrrrr. Mine with a Saito 100 is a beaut. Cannot imagine the ballistics with a 120.

Hello Friends

Glad to see some of you out flying. My day is coming!!! stevegauth30 mentioned flying with a 120. I am assuming he is flying a 60 size Skybolt. (Remember, bigger is better! {engine}) Still trying to find plan sheets for my Bauer Modelle Skybolt kit. They recommend a 30cc engine as this is a 1/4 quarter scale, 72", 1830mm. When the time is right I may look at the OS 40cc 4-cycle. Did receive a copy of the instruction/assembly book. It is a help but no pictures!

STILL NEED HELP

I bought this Skybolt over the winter. I am the second owner, so I was the first fly it. it flys like it is on rails, and needs power to land. With
this plane I have to think when I fly it. The previous owner built it for plans from RC modeler magazine from the June 1977 issue, he did a great job.

It has .65 os max 2 stroke. I might upgrade to a .91 four stroke Satio. I looking forward to flying this plane.

Nice looking bolt you got there. They are a blast to fly. I'm just finishing up an engine swap in mine. It had an OS 120 up front but it was better suited in a warbird, so I crammed a DLE 20 in it's place. Should be a blast if the wind and rain ever quit.

Hey, I would REALLY like to see how the DLE 20 fits (or not) on the Skybolt. I will someday soon start building my recently acquired GP kit, and I also had in mind the OS FS120, the one with the pump I already have. Surprised you don't like it on the Skybolt. For me, it is the best engine I ever owned, and I've owned a lot. Unless you mean it in a way "it's such a good engine it feels wasted on a Skybolt", but still... Anyway, my opinion, pictures of the DLE 20 would be very welcome.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved the 120 on the bolt. My dilemma was that I just finished building a warbird and was going to put the DLE on that but decided I wanted the sweet four stroke sound on the warbird and the chain saw sound on the bolt rather than the other way around. The bolt is insane with the 120 and I expect no less from the DLE. I'll post pics soon of the install.

True. If in between sport plane and warbird, the four stroke goes definitely with the warbird. Hope the DLE sounds good too. I wouldn't like for it to fly the bolt at full throttle. I would be very happy with the sound it makes at 1/2 throttle. Always depending on the muffler of course (is there a good pitts one apart from the rear exhaust they sell it with?), but any DLE at full throttle is a little annoying. Too much screaming.

Believe you me, if it's anything like the 120 was then there's really not much need for full throttle. The 120 would leap in the air at 1/2. Sure, they make all sorts of after market mufflers for the DLE.

Here's the 20 all mounted up. Still haven't flown it with it, but I just ran it. Seeing how were looking at my bolt, I was just looking at it, and it looks to have a bunch of up thrust. Is this right? Anyone got there cowl off that can look at there's? What do you guys think? Not sure if you can tell from the pics or not.

Plans indicate 2 degrees right thrust and 1 UP thrust, so the up thing is OK. But, from what I see and provided the cabanes sheeting is leveled with the cockpit plane, you have more than 1 degree. I would also like to see the DLE with the cowl on, to see how much it shows. Thanx for these pictures though, it doesn't seem too big for that plane.

Thanks. I didn't see it in the manual, and was too lazy to find the plans. I'm going to have to check it with a meter to make sure it's where it needs to be. I'll get the cowl on after work today and post a pic. It shouldn't be too much different from the 120 as far as the cowl go's. The only major difference is the muffler. Aside from that, the dimensions are really close. Unfortunately, there's a gaping hole in the bottom of the cowl from the muffler of the 120 that doesn't need to be there for this one, but I'll have good cooling air. Post pics later. Thanks. Also, I'll give a flight report probably this weekend.

Btw, I could be wrong, but it kind of looks like the cabane sheeting your looking at pitches up slightly towards the canopy, making it look worse than it is. I'll set up the robart meter after work to find out for sure.

Clearly it does! The picture is a little blurred but I found out after rolling back the plans. Still, the 1 degree up on the plans is almost unperceivable, your picture shows a lot more.
As for the muffler, so I guess the rear exhaust DLE 20 will be better than the FS120, since you won't have to cut for the OS muffler? What about the spark plug pipe?

Yes, I probably have more like 4 or 5 right now. A DLE with the rear exhaust would definatly be way better, but you'll still have to cut out the bottom of the cowl for the cylinder head. It hangs way below the cowl. I'm going to stop tomorrow and get an inverted wrap around pitts for it so I don't have to cut mine any more.

Ok, so I fixed the up thrust to as close as I can get it to 1 degree up, and got an inverted pitts for the DLE. I had to cut out a lot more of the cowl at the bottom than I would have liked, but it's on. Hopefully it's worth it. Most of the cowl bottom was already cut out for the 120, I just had to make the hole slightly bigger. I'm sure I could have made it look a little better, but...

I see what you mean. I forgot the pitts muffler has to start from the exhaust hole of the cylinder as well, and in your case is a real wrap around. The cylinder really stands out! I once had a tiny 20cc beautiful RCGF gasser on the ARF Skybolt, with a blue head and a polished muffler. I was staring at it so much, that I jinxed it. The plane only flew for no more than 10 sec, and then the beautiful yet apparently unreliable RCGF quit. We all know what happens when the engine quits at take off climbing. Since then I promised myself to build this plane (the ARF really sucked) and put a good gasser on it. I still have the Slimline smoke system waiting...
Hope it flies well with it though. It looks more than enough, if anyone can judge from the size of the cylinder head relatively to a cowl! Thank you for the photos.
