Default Lets see your Cubs!

Face it, anyone who builds enough kits will eventually build a cub.

I'm considering the Sig 1/5 scale J-3 and will probably put a Saito 60 Twin-cylinder in the nose, and I'd sure like to see other people's projects, finished or not.

So post us some pics!!

Currently building a SIG 1/4 Scale Kit. Was thinking about converting it into an L-4, but have recently decided to build as an NE-1. Building is going much slower than I would like, but sometimes you just dont have as much time anymore.

Yeah, but it's looking good. Take your time, savor every piece.

flycfii---- you won't go wrong with sig's 1/5 scale. Comes out to a nice sized plane, and is an excellent build, all laser cut. Here's mine, .65 Saito power:

That would be a lot of power for a Cub wouldn't it?

Do you mean the .65? Yes and no. If you build the Sig 1/5 by the plans, no mods, it comes out about 6 or 7 pounds. A .46 2-stroke or a .52 - .56 4 stroke would be plenty of power for scale flight. I wanted to turn a scale diameter prop (14 inch), and as modified to an L-4, with scale gear, on-board glow system, and a few repairs over the years, mine weighs 11 pounds. The .65 is still more power than needed to fly the plane, but I can cruise around at 1/3 throttle, and the 4 stroke sounds great, plus I can fly for close to 30 minutes if I want.

Okay,, I see now where you're coming from on that engine. I have attached the OS52 four stroke but I have yet to fly the plane so I can't say whether or not it's the "right" power.

And don't forget that twin-cylinder four strokes lose a bit of power; ie- it would be the equiovalent of a single cylinder .45 or .50 at best.

Keep the pics coming, guys!

The Saito literature lists the .56 single at 0.93 hp, and the .65 at 0.95 hp. The .60T is rated at 0.9hp, just a tad less than the .56. For all practical purposes, you probably won't notice the difference between the .56 and .60T. I think the torque curves might tell a difference, though. The twin has more reciprocating mass, but a shorter stroke, and two power pulses per revolution. The .65 is one of the "older" Saitos, the stroke is longer in proportion to the bore. I've owned a .56, and I can tell you from comparison that the .65 has much better bottom end and midrange power. It's a bunch heavier, though. I guess it all evens out in the end.

sacgate, the .52 should work fine, I've seen one in a Sig Cub, it flew great.

Here are pics of my Great Planes .60 Cub kit. I built it as the clipped wing version with a wing span of 83". I am powering it with a Saito .91 4 stroke. Looks and sounds great on a slow fly by.

This is my 1/5 Sig Cub modified to L-4 in construction...great kit! I have made the scale gear and wing struts myself, lot of work...The engine is a Saïto FA 60 Twin, really nice.
Wheigth must be arround 9 lbs, not bab for this big wing!

Woodworm, that is one of the prettiest L-4s I've seen. Great attention to detail! Keep us posted as you complete her.

Here is my Cub,
Sig 1/4 C/W Cub with a Magnum 120 4-stroke for power, it is a great flying plane. I am in my 3rd season with this plane and it still looks as good as the day it was painted.

Yes they are Robart,
So far no issues with the gear, they really make the landings smooth.

Cubnut,

Nice looking Cub! Did you use the Sig cylinders? I'm getting ready to build my 1/4 scale Sig J3 and would like to use some cylinders with a little more detail.

Thanks,

Scott
