New to the hobby and can someone tell me the me the differnce in 5-15-30 minute epoxy's? Is it just the drying time or does one hold better then the other. Thanks,
Dan

It is the working time. At least that's how it used to be. Some manufacturers are listing the curing time now which is confusing everyone.
Traditionally, it is the time you have to work with the epoxy before it is too thick.
Slower is better. Don't use 5 minute epoxy for anything. The slowest you should even consider using is 30 minute epoxy. Fast epoxies cure rubbery and then turn brittle.
Here's more info for you:

MinnFlyer Thankyou much for the input. Now I have proof to show my friend that the Uproar I built this winter will probably rattle apart in mid air no thanks to his inpatience. I,m building a Pete and Poke now and have the elevator, stabilizer, rudder and fin put together with 6 min. epoxy. Would you suggest I disassemble them and put back together with 30 min epoxy. Thanks again, Dan

5 Minute epoxy works fine, just be sure to mix it properly. If it says 1/1 resin and hardener, mix it 1/1. 5 minute is particularly good where you will have trouble containing it till it sets. 30 minute has a tendency to run no matter how carefully it is contained. All things being equal though, use the 30 minute.

The longer it takes to cure the stronger it is . Make sure that what ever type you use apply with in the time limits, If it does not penetraite the surfice it will only have a surface bond and will not hold.

Yea, don't worry about it. I wouldn't want to use it on a giant scale wing brace though. The only advantage to 5 min epoxy is it's setting time (Most still take 24 hours to fully cure). I'f I don't want something to move while it's curing, after the epoxy, I add a few strategically place drops of Medium CA with some accelerator to hold things in place while the epoxy cures.

MinnFlyer Once again many thanks.I'm now up to the center part of my Pete N Poke from what they say I should use a aliphatic resin such as Great Planes Wood Glue is that the same as Elmers carpenters glue. Sure looks the same. Also what would you suggest for the outer panels of the wing? Thanks again, Dan

Does it matter if it's interior or exterior and does one hold better than the other? Also if this is the case meaning you can build a complete plane with just carpenter's glue except for the landing gear and firewalls, why even bother with the epoxy's C A's accelerators and all the other stuff there is? Elmer's carpenter's glue is only 1.99 for a 4oz.bottle where as all the other stuff is so much more.Or it's just the individuals choice?

I use Carpenter's glue for most of my construction. I don't use CA for construction at all. I don't like the stuff. What I do use it for is hardening threads cut into wood such as servo rails/trays. I never use accelerator. That stuff is just a waste of money to me. It's for people who think a microwave oven is too slow.
Just buy regular carpenter's glue. Elmer's, Titebond, etc. It doesn't need to be exterior grade.

I used to use CA for all of my construction (Except where Epoxy was needed). Since I have started building larger planes, I was going broke buying CA, but I still like the speed of using it.
So now, I compromise. For instance, on a cap strip, I will put 1 drop of CA at aech end and one in the middle, then use carpenters glue in between them. The CA holds it in place while the wood glue dries.

Sky Chief (and others):
I don't want to do any "Bubble Buisting" here, but there IS a difference in "White" glues.
I used to use a lot of plain old Elmer's glue, then I had a boat come apart. Elmer's is not waterproof. Titebond is.
Not too long ago a new type Elmer's hit the market, stated as being waterproof. That would be OK, but not the older stuff.
Pica "Glu-it" is another good one, dries faster than any other aliphatic i've used. Recommended.
Yes, Minn Mike, if you buy CA in the 1/2 oz bottles, or even the two ounce bottles it's expensive for a larger plane. Buy the 8 oz. bottle for $20, refill your smaller bottles for use.
Store the 8 oz. bottle in the refrigerator, but be sure to let it warm up before you open the cap to refill the smaller bottle - any condensation inside the big one, bye-bye CA.
Or, if you have a supply of 2 oz.bottles soak them in acetone to clean them, when your 8 oz bottle arrives fill all the smaller ones, store them in the refrigerator until needed for use. And again, let them warm before opening.
I have several filled bottles waiting in my refrigerator right now.
Mike said "Hey You,
Glue is just glue."
. But I must explain,
. When caught in the rain,
Minn's airplane fell in two.
Bill.
PS Gotcha, Mike. Haw. wr.

Mike:
Didn't say 20 ounce bottle, I said eight ounce bottle for $20.
And I get them from Dave Brown. It's been a while so the price might not be good anymore.
Last purchase of CA was Kwik Bond thin, one of the mail order places had a Super-Duper special, bought twelve two ounce bottles, price was around $30, just about 1/2 mail order price. Still have four in my refrigerator. Think it was Hobby people, but might have been Tower.
Almost never find the 8 oz bottles in a LHS, Joe Average doesn't buy it for two reasons. 1) He doesn't store it properly, it hardens in the bottle with only 10% used, or 2) He uses it so slowly that it dies of old age with 1/2 still in the bottle.
But if you buy it "Right" and lose 1/2 you are still ahead of the game if you usually buy the 2 oz bottles at your LHS. Saw a $9 price on a 2 oz bottle not long ago. In a dire emergency maybe, but oithewise not "No" but "Hell No."
So here are some ideas, use them as you will.
Sat in the chair, came up like a rocket.
. CA bottle was in his hip pocket.

Sky Chief:
Thank you for your nice words, All of us who use RCU (well, at least most of us) try to make visiting enjoyable as well as educational. Sometimes we get a pat on the back and sometimes the pat is applied with a foot, a bit lower down. And a lot harder. But still on the back.
Several of us who are regulars have a running "Zing" contest, all in fun, and in no particular thread.
So stick around, enjoy, and if you wish, join in the "Zinging."
Chuck, we put a smile on the old man's face.
. When he opens it, shall I put him in his place?
Haw.
