Sig King Kobra Build

RE: Sig King Kobra Build
The humidity in that area drove me crazy for 19 years. But it's an interesting place to live anyway. I hope highway 19 going north has improved.
What colors have you decided on? I'm building an electric King Kobra which will have an AXI 4120/14 and a 6-cell 5300maH Lipo. Wanted to do camoflauge but that would require painting and make my electric King Kobra heavy.

The stab is installed, fuse is formed, turttle deck also. As soon as that is done I will install the fin.
But the canopy will wait untill after the fuse is glassed I think.
While waiting for my order from SIG of cloth and resin I will finish the wheel well on the wing. Hopefully everything will be ready for paint before the humidity rises too high here in the Spring.

It might be time to start your own thread. Most thread starters frown on other builds invading their space, especially if it is an active thread. Not that we aren't happy to see a KK thread.

m_gutzmer, you have a very clean KK. Keep us posted on your test flights.
oliveDrab, keep us updated on your electric conversion. I will be curious to how you pipe in the air to keep the motor, battery and ESC cool. Will the exit hole at the rear of the fuselage be enough or will you have to make another exit to move more air volume?
Mike

Hi David. I'll just be lurking and seeing what's going on. I haven't been doing much RC in the past two years and don't see that changing for some time to come. What little I have been doing is mainly electric. Y'all keep the KK's going.

.50 OR .75 OZ fiberglass with Minwax Polycrylic and water based paint is lighter than plastic cote if done right. Camo would be easy to do in paint.

RE: Sig King Kobra Build
Man! This was (is?) a great thread.... Mike had it reading like a novel for a couple years.
So much so, that I scarfed a King Kobra off eBay yesterday to make a home for my Clarence Lee ported K&B.61 (also acquired from eBay... NIB with documentation from Mr. Lee). I'd been looking for a low cost pattern type plane for that engine, and the King Kobra is well suited by virtue of it's "vintage" status. I'm planning on retracts and possibly a pipe (although the .61 comes with the Lee modified K&B muff). All depends on what the retracts wind up costing me, I suppose. I will be moving the vertical fin back, extending the rudder down, and splitting the elevator. This KK will be 'glassed, and sprayed with epoxy.
I will attempt to resist the temptation to modify the stab to anhedral. I did that on my old Kaos (photo). Perhaps only my imagination, but that plane seemed on rails while inverted... mainly I just liked the way the stab looked.
I am a little bit saddened to hear Mike say that he's not been doing much R/C lately, as I was really looking forward to seeing the final product completed. That said, there are some fine looking KK's in this thread.
So,anyway... BIG thanks Mike (and others), for posting such detailed information relating to retract install, glassing techniques, tips, hints, etc.
Mike... there are probably ten guys here who would buy your KK "as is"....beautiful and clean workmanship!
I hope you can finish it one day soon.

JugMan,
Have fun with your KK build and many thanks for the compliments.I have so much time invested in my KK construction that I fully intend to finish it one day.
My one suggestion to you is to look into the new electric retracts that are available.Sure does beat having to run air lines that eventually dry rot, and not having to chase potential air leaks. It’s also nice to able to keep the landing gear retracted for storage and transportation.I have the e-Flite electric retracts in my Bonanza and I really like them.
Keep us posted on your progress.

RE: Sig King Kobra Build
I finally flew my KK a couple of weeks ago. A bit sluggish, both the engine and the plane. After 5-6 minutes of flight I gave up and decided to bring her in. Unfortunately, about the time I told myself to keep the speed up it was too late. It stalled on the turn around at the end of the field and went in. Repairable but unlikely as I have many projects ongoing.

RE: Sig King Kobra Build
Hi Mike,
Roger that on the the electric retracts... I spent hours checking what's out there there last night on the web.
For weight, simplicity and functionality, I don't see how the .60-1.20 sized eFlite electric tri-gears can be beat for a King Kobra (about $189).... almost too easy to install.
The KK kit should arrive next week, hoping it arrives intact.
I'm also thinking this is the project to attempt vacuum bagging the glass on the sheeted foam wing. There's a small pump set-up that ACP Composites sells (around $120 for a starter kit) that might be OK for wings. Too much vacuum isn't a good idea anyway, from what I've read (crush). I'll post any worthy images of the build.
Really glad to hear you're gonna finish your KK...

I could use a couple of sets of King Kobra fixed gear for use on Kougars to increase the prop to ground clearance (engine too large, prop too long, ground too rough). If you replaced fixed gear with retracts I would like to buy 2 sets for King Kobra.

I am building one my self and really like the wheel sander, I have some tips that I would like to pass along, instead of using the cardboard tubes just use a straight edge I used a sheet of balsa use the zona saw and cut a small cut along the straight edge then just push your servo lead into the cut servo leads are cheap now days and the cut remove less material. Another and this will take some skill I install a milling head into my Dremel tool cut the opening size for your cut out and rout out the openings using the shaft and chuck face as a guide and a metal rule along the open span adjust your cut in passes by lenghting the cutting bit messy but no smoke or hot iron wire to bend

The books have long expired and ran out of great authors, I'm at a stand still with the KK waiting for retracts, sent mine back for repair last week and have not seen them since. To poor for electrics so going with the Spring Air like the plan calls for. (and I already had the mains) This is as old school as one can get. I'm using a 40 year old Supertigre with the factory tuned pipe that has never been started but is a screamer serie X that's Italian for fast! Need a new plane getting bored with the regulars. How about this build great ideas and insight.
