Default Sig 4*-40 vs. 4*-60

Now that winter is here I was looking to start a new project. I've gotten pretty good with my Tower Hobbies Trainer 40 this past year, and am looking forward to moving up the ladder when spring comes. After seeing many post on several different forums, the Sig 4Star seems to be a logical next plane.

The only question I have is...are there any benefits to sticking with the 40 sized plane, or is it OK to move to the bigger model? I have a SuperTiger .75 that is almost 15 years old, but has never been out of the box. I'd love to be able to use that engine, as long as there arn't any significant differences (other than size) in the two planes. Any input/suggestions is very much appreciated.

The general rule is the bigger the better. Larger aircraft are generally more stable. The ST 75 would be a great match for the 4*60.

I really like 60 sized planes. They are still easy to transport but fly better than 25-40 sized planes.

If you have the engine sitting around go for the 60. No one should have and engine sitting around without a plane.

I don't think there's much of a price difference in the two. They fly pretty much the same but the 60 will handle a bit better if it gets breezy at the field.

Keep the trainer togther. Don't start pulling parts off it for a new plane yet. A lot of us keep our trainers around for different reasons.

Suggest you build the 4* 60, they fly great, the kit is easier to build than the 4*40, as the parts are LZ cut and fit extremely well. The larger plane will be easier to fly, there is no such thing as "Scale" air. I set my 4*60 up with flaps, so that it will be easier to land, they tend to float. I would also sheet the leading edge of the wing back to the first top and bottom spar. Some people like to shorten the wing by one bay per side, but I prefer to keep the wing span stock, except for the tips, I always make a 1 to 3 inch tip for the wings as I don't like the cut off look. Also cut down the canopy as the stock one is UGLY.

Enjoy,

Rlaph

I seem to remember a 4-star build somewhere here... And the builder moved the canopy back on section. Anybody else remember that?

I've got a 4*60 waiting to be built, I've been thinking of doing that to it...

Hi Guys,
I was thinking of building the Sig Giant Four-Star 120 Kit. I have a K&B 100 Areo with the square, back mounted, muffler that I thought would work on this plane. Anyone built this plane? Is there a cowl avialable? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks Huck

Just found a cowl for the 120 at http://www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com/newprod.htm for $35. Any other thoughts on the 120 appreciated.

I say go with the 60. You have the engine, and bigger does fly better.

Had a 4-40 for "years"....plane was my 2nd (back in early 90's)....was "broken" and repaired ...I cant count how many times.....4Star series planes are Great 2nd Planes.....and 4-60 would be a great choice...bigger is better....good luck

I have built both, and the .60 size went together a little faster .

You have a good engine for the .60, so I`d go with it.

I have the 40, had a 60 (sold it [:@]) and am planning on bashing another 60 this winter w/a ST G-75 also. Go the 60, you can't go wrong.

As for bashing (here's what I plan on doing) do a search on here for the sixty, under Kit Building, there are allot of threads!

1. Flip canopy around 180 degrees and trim to sport look.
2. Cut one bay off each wing tip and round off.
3. Sheet leading edge of wing back to first spar.
4. Sheet turtle-deck
5. Larger rudder and elevators (up to 25%)
6. Cut cheeks and build balsa cowl.
7. .....and maybe install retracts....or at least stronger landing gear.

I seriously thought about bashing my .60 , but did`nt.. Only changes I made were to add a Sullivan tail wheel and installed a SuperTigre .90 . , stock BB servos. I have several aerobatic planes so I wanted to keep the 4* stock, so I`d have one I`m always comfortable with.

The ST.75 and .90 share the same foot print , so it would look a lot like my set up.

Thanks a lot everyone!

I'm heading down to the hobby shop this afternoon; they say they have one in stock! It will be a couple of weeks before I can start on it, but at least I'll have it when I'm ready to go. I'll start a new thread with some pics once I get going on it. Thanks again for all the good advice!
