Kevin,
Too late for me to have fun while I am young, but I do my best to make everything I do fun!, man, does that get me into trouble at times! Didnt get to do the first flight like I had hoped on Sunday, the winds were just too much for a first flight for a plane like this. I still have a couple thing to do anyway, I will be ready for next weekend to try it again after we go to Top Gun on Saturday. The TBM is ready for a first flight too, maybe I can get them both in the air. Meanwhile, I have started on the Giant P-47, that will keep me busy for a while.

Default RE: PICA P-40 Build.

Its the Giant Top Flite kit, built as a bubble canopy version which is my favorite P-47.
As of about 2 hours ago, all has changed, I have to give some thought to what I will be building next. I just unloaded some new RC airplanes, a partially built Giant Top Flite Corsair project, An F-6f, don smith plans kit that has been started, a Vallie Aviation Hawker Typhoon, a huge Ziroli F-6f kit with a fiberglass fuselage, and the plans and plastic parts for a ziroli B-25.
I know I want to complete the Ziroli F-6f and the Hawker Typhoon, not sure what or when I will do with the rest as of yet. I am now torn between the P-47, Ziroli Hellcat and the Typhoon. My son wants the Typhoon, I am thinking the Hellcat or the P-47 is closest to being done and am thinking they could be done the quickest. But the P-47 is already on the bench.... what to do. I suppose I will give it a few days and decide which I want to do next.

Casey,

Looks like if all goes well, tomorrow will be the maiden on the P-40 and the TBM Avenger. It looks like good weather and we will be going to King Orange at The Bay City club. Tonight we will verify the retracts are working and that is the last thing to check before starting the engine and getting it into the air. Your P-40 looks like it is coming along well. I have been working in the shop on the P-47, we have had a lot of rain these last 8 days or so. Keep p[osting your progress!

Roger! My brother lives around the Sarasota area. Said you've had your share of rain, so I'm glad to hear this weekend might offer window for flying.
Look forward to seeing the pics and best of luck sir with the two new birds.

Also I look forward to seeing how your Top Flight GS P-47 comes along, as I believe that is the next box to pull down from my shelf.I was considering theMeister Scale, but I have the TopFlight already.
I'm using my P-40 build to iron out all I want to throw in my Jug! So, I'll be tuning in lol.
by the way will it be a razor or bubble, and do you have any scheme picked out yet?

GOODHUNTING!!!

Got the P-40 runningyesterdayand did then first flight. It took some adjusting to get the idle and the high end making good power. Finally it was time to fly it. I had checked out the retract system the night before and everything worked great. I removed the cowl and spinner for the first flight. We decided to keep the gear down for the flight. It sure did take a long takeoff run, my son was flying it and did an impressive scale takeoff, then I heard him say, oh now I am on high rates! He had somehow bumped the switch to low rates, I am going to change them to much closer to high rates, they were ineffective for the most part. He used a lot of rudder when making turns, he said it kept wanting to fall out of the turns. This is probably one of the toughest planes to fly heavy. He made the turns well and it seemed to need a lot of trim to gwt it dialed in. after about 3 passes around the field, it was obvious it was slowly loosing power. as he made approaches to land it took a few times to get lined up properly and then he realized, he couldnt slow it down either, odd, wont go faster or slower. He was able to get it back around but was still losing power and he couldnt get it back to the runway and he landed it in the long grass at the end of the runway. It hit and flipped, ripping out the main gear and crushing the nose section on the bottom between the cowl and the cowl flaps. No major structural damage, even the gear wwere not bent, just pulled out with some of the hardwood. Wont be a tough fix, could have been a lot better and should sure could have been a whole lot worse. I think Sean did a great job actually, I doubt anyone could have landed it any better with the power dropping to nil. I did notice there was black oily residue just behind the exhaust, I will pull the engine and check the carb needles and see where they are at. I will run the engine and make sure it is ready before flying it again. All I really have to repair to fly it is the landing gear mounting, not a big deal really. I will wait to repair it till I have the P-47 done and flying. The shop is such a big mess after sanding in there, I dont want to bring it in there till I have the shop cleaned again.

This is the highest wing loading of any plane we have flown and it sure was noticable, takes a bit of the fun away but was visually impressive in flight. Sure glad it wasnt hurt any worse than it was.

I would agree with ya there, could have been alot worse! Sounds like you should be quite proud of your son for being able to hande the P-40 (on maiden!!!)with such issues! I don't think that with what you described I would have wanted to have the sticks....PUCKER!!!!

I'd say it was one you walked away from, and I will await the news of the rebuild. Until then drop me a line if you start a link for the P-47. I will probably wait to start my Top Flight GS P-47until mid summer, as I'm going to be moving back to the mainland in September.

Until then enjoy my build on my Top Flight P-40. I need to get it finished before then so I can ship it.

That's a lot of issues for a maiden.....

From what you're describing it sounds like it was really nose heavy.  Falling in turns, tough to slow down.  Maybe something to keep in mind once you're ready again.

Your son deserves a pat on the back.  Having engine control issues on a maiden flight are nerve wracking!  You built a stunning example of the P-40.  I'm sure when you get it dialed in you'll be able to relax and admire your flying artwork.

Well, lets see, it was the 1st of January 2008 when I started this project, it took 1 and 1/2 years to get it in the air for its first flight which didnt go so well, but could have been a lot worse. Since that time I structurally repaired the plane and had a great amount of anxiety about putting it in the air again. Today we took it out to Bay City Flyers and made 3 flights with it. My son Sean did the flying and did a magnificent job as usual. IA friend of ours took some great pictures for us. I now wish we had the pilot and gear doors on it. That will by my next project, to finish the details to get it ready for the Corvin Miller Scale Masters Qualifier in Sarasota next month. I hope we will be able to fly this or the BT-13 at Top Gun next year.

Heres a link to some video of the flights. I just came in from checking the center of gravity and this is way too nose heavy, cant wait to dump some excess weight!

Hi, I have just won a Pica 1/5 scale P-40 on e-bay . Going through the contents of the box I noticed that page 22 of the building instructions is missing [:@]. If any of you on this thread still have a copy of the building instructions, I would really appreciate getting a copy of page 22 ( steps 5 to 13 of the fuselage build) either photocopied, scanned or faxed.
Thank you,
Alan

Default Amazing job!

Denny,
you definitely have skills and i hope i can make my pica p-40e 1/5 scale look a 1/4 as good as yours lol. I recently purchased a partial kit (just ribs and fuselage laser cut) this will be my 1st build in almost 30 years "midlife crisis as my wife calls it lol". I have purchased all my wood that I need and found a replacement pica cowl but i need the rest of the small or nonwood parts. Does anyone know where I can purchase those? Thanks in advance, Frank
