RE: GP 60 Size Extra Build
I'm covering the top with Missle Red Monokote. The blue trim is Ultracoat I had left over from my Top Flight Corsair I built a couple of years ago. I'm going to cover the top in two pieces. First from the tail up past the cockpit. Second will be just the front turtle deck. The pieces overlap and you can hardly tell it's in two seperate pieces.

Looks good Scott. I just bought this kit myself and I'm in the process of building it now. I'm glad you posted pics of that rudder I might scrap the one I just built and make mine a bit larger too.

I used Pacer 560 canopy glue for the canopy. I've used it in the past and it works good. Just a bead around the edge and tape it in place overnight.

RE: GP 60 Size Extra Build
The cowl, landing gear, and wheel pants have 3 coats of primer covered with 3 coats of paint. I used Lustrekote primer and Lustrekote paints. I still have to paint the top of the cowl missle red and add the blue stripe to match the covering on the airplane. I'm going to let the white dry for a couple of weeks before I attemp to tape and paint the red and blue.

For mounting the cowl - I drilled out holes in the airplane and epoxied in lengths of nyrod pushrod material. I added 1/2 by 1/2 inch hardwood backing blocks inside the airplane to accept the nyrod. My hope is that the cowl screws won't be as likely to strip out as they would if they were screwed into the light ply and backing blocks alone. I have 8 screws total holding the cowl on.

RE: GP 60 Size Extra Build
For an engine - I purchased an OS .91 Surpass 2. A number of people have used larger engines so I'm hoping this will be enough motor for the airplane.
Now all that's left is to finish painting the cowl and balancing (both CG and laterally).
I'll be sure to follow up with a flight report as soon as it warms up and the snow melts up here in Minnesota!
Scott.

Awesome! I can't wait to hear about how if flies. Are you going to get a flying weight of it as well? If you know how much it weighs I'd like to hear because I'm a little worried that mine is going to be to heavy. I'm puting the Zenoah G20 on the front of mine. Also how did the CG work out with the .91 on the front? I heard that plane flies nice and light with the O.S. 91 so you should be happy with it.

RE: GP 60 Size Extra Build
Well how does it fly?? It looks most excellent!
I started one a few years ago and hope to get back to it soon. I bought a YS110 for it, but it will be doing duty elsewhere. It looks like four strokes sized 91-1.25 are the norm. Is the 1.25 maybe a little over the top? Not power wise, but weight wise. Saito has the new 1.15. Would this be enough on the power end? I love power but not at the expense of too much weight.

RE: GP 60 Size Extra Build
The airplane flies great!
I've got close to 20 flights on it already and am very happy with it. The OS .91 is plenty of engine for my style. It doesn't have unlimited vertical but it will go from level flight to straight up for a couple of hundred feet (plenty for any IMAC manuver). This airplane does great upright and inverted spins, knife edges with a bit of push to the belly, and lands like a dream. I've got the cg a bit on the nose heavy side still and will have to shift a few things around to get the battery further back (and to help flatten out the spins a bit).
I wouldn't want any more weight in the nose of this airplane. If you can figure out how to either mount the rudder and elevator servo's in the rear or make a hatch somewhere in the fuse for the battery, then this airframe could handle a heavier engine.
This is one nice flying airplane.

Scott,
One thing you can do is to move the engine as far back in the mount as you possibly can. This will cut weight at the nose helping with the overall balance. I did this on a Giles I built last year. It help tremendously and as a result, I did not have to install the battery in the tail as initialy predicted. This will also reduce the cowl lenght and weight.
Also, because I used a GP engine mount, I cut the excess of the tips of the mount. The weight of those tips alone was almost one ounce. Net result would be better CG management and a lighter model.
My 2 cents.
Pedro

I have been quietly following your build sequence and must congratulate you on a very good job of keeping us informed of your progress and also on the construction of a very fine looking model. Glad to hear that your maiden flight was successful and that you are pleased with the performance of your model. I sure hope she gives you many more enjoyable moments in the air.

RE: GP 60 Size Extra Build
Many more sucessful flights have been had throughout the summer - It fly's great! Wheel pants have fallen apart from the rough grass field but no other issues.
alfredbmor - I just eyeballed the build changes to the elevators and rudder - it doesn't need to be precise.
minitelemaster - I like and own a few OS .91 surpass 2 4-cycles and prop them all with either a 14x6 or 13x8 APC. I'm not sure exactly the rpm but if I remember correctly its somewhere just over 10k on the ground.
Hope that helps.
Scott.

RE: GP 60 Size Extra Build
Thanks for the info-I'm trying to figure out a suitable electric conversion. One more thing, how fast does the plane land? I fly out of a very small field.

I am in the covering process on my gp extra 300 too. I really liked this kit. I wish gp would have incorporated a tail section with an airfoil though. I was dissapointed to see it flat...
The only mods I made were enlarged rudder/balancer. Enlarged the ailrons by one bay. 5245 allround, 645 on rudder pull pull and saito 100 pumped.
I did however, lighten the living snot out of the aircraft. Mostly on the fusalage. I'm hoping for 7 lbs or less...
