Default Sig 1/5 Cub question

I am beginnig a build of the Sig 1/5 Cub and with an OS 52FS. Debating whether to mount sideways or inverted. New to this so any suggestions would be welcome. Also, if I mount inverted the carb is lower - do I need to lower the fuel tank or does it matter ? Thanks for any input.

It's up to you. Inverted will look better, but will require that you either run a remote glow extension or put up with hassle of trying to get the glow igniter on/off from an awkward position. Carb tuning is a little more critical with inverted mounting, but no big deal, just take your time to get it right. Yes, you need to make sure your carb and tank centerline are close to the same height. You may have to cut some of the original formers or supports to achieve this.

"FlyingPilgrim" is right. Inverted will look great, but watch the tank height and DO run an onboard glow lighter, especially with a 4 stroke.

I don't run on-board glow drivers on my inverted 4-strokes, just an extension to the glow plug so it's easier to hook up the power panel igniter (Sonic Tronics makes a nice one, Sullivan will not work with short anode plugs). I usually mount them to the firewall with an access hole in the side of the cowling to stick the igniter through. On the Cub, you could actually mount the hook-up on the top of the cowl sticking out in the location the fuel indicater would be on a full size cub.
If you run good glow plug (OS "F" or YS) and tune your low speed needle carefully, you should be able to get nice reliable idle of 2K with good transition even without on-board glow. Of course on a Cub, you can easily support the added weight of an on-board glow, and it makes it even more convenient to start (switch on, flip prop, & go!). You could get your idle a little lower with on-board glow as well, which is pretty cool while on the tarmac.

It's pretty easy to lower the tank shelf on this kit; just cut the locator tabs off and put it where you want, you may need to trim it for width. About 1/2" or so lower is about right. You should also measure your prop hub to firewall distance , make sure the 4-stroke and whatever mount you're using will fit okay. I moved the firewall back about an inch on mine to fit a .65 Saito. There's just enough overlap in the cowl for this.

As for sideways or inverted, like already said, depends on how scale do you want. Mine's inverted; I installed an on-board glow, but I really don't need it, the engine is dialed in and runs fine without it. I use it to start up, because the glow plug IS difficult to get at.

I have a SIG 1/5 scale Cub with a Magnum 52 4 stroke mounted sideways. The head sticks out the one side and the dummy head is mounted on the other side. The 52 4 stroke flies it nice and scale like. It's easy to get to the glow plug with the engine mounted this way.
