It shows what can be done with such a classic design.
The main feature of the Mambo is the fin-rudder outline shape and the forward going hinge line at the top (like the Mooney)
http://www.mooney.com/acclaim-type-s/overview.html
Watch the video.
Another feature is the original design offering the best strength to weight ratio.
Flying that Mambo on escapement only and a home made radio transmitter and receiver in the old radio control experimentations led to frequent abnormal landing (crashes) with little damage.
Attached some pics of that old stuff.

RE: Sterling Mini Mambo - Vintage kit built from plans
Like seeing the photo's and input on this one. I finally got relatively settled down and decided to get this bird back in action. The papering took quite the beating in all of the moves, so opted to mono coat the wing, and experimented with colored tape for the vertical stab, that latter one worked out nicely, so found a cheap alternative to plastic coverings. Also, was thinking about it, this design is kind of a holy grail of sorts in planes, same design can be 2, 3 and 4 channel, and fly well within all, so I spent the day yesterday creating jigs for a foamie version of it that I'll go into a small production run of. Stay tuned to see the results, and I suspect, an uneventful maiden.

RE: Sterling Mini Mambo - Vintage kit built from plans
Hello Everyone,
I have had a brand new FS-3 48" Sterling Mambo in the original box sitting on a shelf in my house for almost fifty years. I bought it to replace one that I built that flew away when the escapement mechanism failed. I'm afraid I will never build it although I love it dearly and I love just looking at the picture of it on the box cover.
I'm interested in finding it a good home and also allowing me to get a 1/6th scale single seater ww1 rc fighter.
I hope the I uploaded the images correctly. They were taken a couple of days ago, -the first time that the box has been opened and the tissue paper and plans moved to see the wood inside.
Cheers! -David

I am trying to figure out how you can wish to part with an old friend that you wrote
although I love it dearly and I love just looking at the picture of it on the box cover.
Put it together (build it) and fly it. Modify it for full control. You will never regret it.
You will regret it the minute it is gone.
Think again.

RE: Sterling Mini Mambo - Vintage kit built from plans
Hi out there, Back in 1978 I purchased the kit for the Mini Mambo at the Post Exchange in Stuttgart Germany (good thing they had two). It was my first airplane at 14 years old. I built the little bugger and installed a state of the art (at the time) COX SANWA two channel proportional radio and a Cox O49. The first few flights were from the hill behind my building. It was a large area. I was able to hand launch it and get some flight time. But that lil radio had range issues. Luckily, it had an automatic range protector. Full right rudder as soon as it lost signal. It was a beautiful spiral dive. I still remember it to this day. Unfortunately, the landing was really ugly. Not much left of that one. But being 14 and undetered. I proceeded to purchase and build the second one. I actually took that one to Patch Barrracks and let one of the club guys proceed to fly it. Dispite telling him to keep it close. He soon ranged out. And who would have guessed. The exact same result. As a result. I now keep all of my airplanes close. Maybe much closer than needed. But This lil airplane is how it all started. The only thing missing is Ailerons. Well Gotta go now, Flying my Katana in the morning. Koz

Koz,
A beautiful and enjoyable story of your adventures in the good old times.
Many fliers, stil these days do loose control because of radio range particularly if they point their 72 Mhtz antenna at the model. That is the direction of minimum radiated signal. A similar situation can also exist on 2.4 Ghtz.
Thanks for your posting Koz.

David,
You have beautiful pictures and I must congratulate the photographer for such clear images in flight. Something I have never achieved with my old Zeiss Ikon 35 mm camera.

Hi Guys,
I have a Minnie Mambo kit on its way from Early RC. I plan to do this plane as a free flight, powered with a PAW .033 diesel. Any advice that you could pass along would be appreciated. I'm assuming that the MM is suitable as a free flight model.

I flew a 48" wingspan Mambo in the early days.
It had an escapement and was controlled by a home made transmitter.
Any models can be "free flight".
The mambo(s) are rather heavy as built accoding to drawings.
Of course it can free fly but it would have a fast speed compared to the average free flight machine.
Any weight reduction would be beneficial keeping in consideration areas where strength is essential.
Have fun and let us posted on your progress.
