1/5 Sig Cub Build Pictures
Well I finally had a chance to sit down today and start working on my 1/5 Sig Cub kit. The lazer cut parts fit together effortlessly. The kit builds fast. Here are some pictures of today's progress.

Keep'em coming! I've thought about building a Cub (either the Sig or the BUSA) since I crunched my much-loved Kyosho ARF Cub.

Will do!
I would highly recommend the Sig Cub especially if you are new to building. This kit is very well packaged with tons of supplies. Very easy to build straight and true. Builds really fast and flies great. This is the second 1/5 Sig Cub kit I have built. The first one was for a friend and I liked it so much i went out and bought my own.

I was just "visiting" the Sig site and comparing the 1/5 Cub with the 1/6 scale kit. The 1/5 Cub looks like it's well worth the additional $100! The key differences seem to be laser cut parts (and corresponding design), two-part wing (a plus in my book), and more scale details.
So many kits, so little time. []

RE: 1/5 Sig Cub Build Pictures
There's no comparison between the 1/5 kit and either the 1/6 or the 1/4. They are both much older designs. I wish Sig would upgrade the 1/4 kit to be a bigger version of the 1/5 in how it builds. The wing attachment method on the 1/5 makes it much nicer scale and still easy to transport in a small hatchback or even back seat. The wing tube adds a lot of strength in the center section, but I would still recommend reinforcing the vertical pieces with some carbon fiber tape, or a small piece of flat stock, as well as the angled piece that creates the "A" pillars at the windshield. Ground looping, or anything else that causes a wingtip to hit, creates some strong torsional forces that usually break these pieces. Your build looks great, at the rate it's going together, the maiden should be about next week, right?

RE: 1/5 Sig Cub Build Pictures
I had a few more hours to work on the cub this weekend. It's coming along great! I decided to add carbon fiber support to the ply cockpit supports for the wing and carbon fibered the ply wing ribs that hold the wing tubes. You can see the supports in one picture. I will add more later.

Once again both this kit and your build of it impress the hell out of me! If I ever do build a Cub THIS will be the one! I love the way the ribs are done on this kit.

Abuflecher, the 1/5 is a great kit to build, but for you I think the 1/6 would make you happier with the style you have for building. The 1/5 would be easier to live with as a model, but the 1/6 is scale and has been around for 50 years , so it is not a bad plane either to last that long.

Small is relative. At 84.5" (about 7 feet) this would be the largest (non-sailplane) in my club and certainly a respectable size. I don't know what's happened to the RC hobby that a 7 foot wingspan model is now considered "small."

Thanks

Not 100% sure yet. Just make everyone happy though I'll say a SAITO 56 GK. Long story behind this comment.

Almost to the paint stage of my Sig 1/5 Cub Build. Going with military L4 grasshopper scheme. Covered in Solartex (Natural). Only need to cover the gear, the top hatch, and the entry window frame. Once the cowl is mounted I will paint. Will most likely make my own mock engine and scrap the stock one. Great building plane.
FYI: I went with electric so I can partisipate in the electric event at my club, which is the biggest event in terms of turnout.
Going to build the Sig 1/4 Cub next and change it into a Supercub.

Looks great! Like the wing struts too. How was working with the Solartex? I have only heard good things so far.

RE: 1/5 Sig Cub Build Pictures
This plane was my first experience with Solartex and I have nothing but good things to say. I attached it using low heat (100C) and shrank it with high heat (150c) and got a perfect finish. Goes around compound curves, such as the wing tips and elevators, with ease.
You will pay a slight weight penatly over Monokote but I felt it was worth it.
I also purchased some Nelson Hobby Paint for the project. This will also be a new experience but I have done some testing and the paint seems to spray and attach well to the solartex.

I have a rookie question for you, I am looking at building kadet senior for old times sake, and i want to attach the wing to the kadet like you have on your cub, what holds the wing to the tube? sorry if this is a little basic

Tundraman's pictures show this feature.....
The design of the Sig Cub requires the use of struts. Without them the wings would quickly fold as the joiner tube is cut in half in the middle of the airframe and is separated by the roof window. With the struts the plane is quite strong, remember, a triangle is about the stongest shape you can make. Just like a truss bridge.
