in those pictures is that OS 46 LA on the airplane?

Yes, it is an earlier OS 46LA engine.

if so how does it fly with that motor?

It flew very well with this motor, but it is not fully aerobatic with the 46LA and I doubt it would hover ! ! !

i have a 46 LA which doesn't have a house, i was thinking about Fun 51 or uproar.

for 46 AX its not seem much of airframe to screw it on...

it looks like an interesting option for 46LA
i can even take the baffle plate out to get some more motor.

is there a servo in the path of the muffler?

Servo's are mounted under the wing, and an extension on the engine helps keep oil off servo.

it doesn't look elaborate enough, no extra parts, with how the economy is going its just right..
what are the options for replacing the landing gear, what do you replace it with?

Thanks
Alex

The landing gear supplied with the kit held up pretty well on my first plane. I may have had to bend it back into position slightly a couple times. Elsewhere in this thread I think someone mentioned installing a fiberglass gear.
I will modify this area on this new build but have not decided what to do yet.
Stay tuned....

NOTED DIFFERENCES IN EARLY & LATE PLANS

OK, here's the 'rub'....

Page 8 of the little instruction book, left side shows a couple vertical braces inside the 'air scoop radiator' area of the plan. These do NOT appear on the large plane you build on top of, at least in the NEW plan that came with my plane this time. The plan I still have from my first build in 2000 differs in this area, and you will see this in the photos marked 'New plan' and 'Old plan'. It may not be critical, but it does strengthen the build overall in MY opinion. The old plan calls for a couple of 1/4x3/8 braces and the photo of the new plan shows I have already added then, including an additional 1/4x1/4 brace (I added this instinctivly before noting the difference...)

Another difference I noted between the two plans is in the tail wheel area. The old plan, which I like better, 'traps' the end of the bent tailwheel 'tang' between the control horn and the backing plate. I think this gives the tailwheel much more strength and support, especially during hard landings. The new plan places this 'tang' below the control horn (which was raised from the old position) in soft balsa, and could rip out the side of the rudder if the landing was 'intense'.....

I will report any other differences worth noting as I discover them. I have not had the chance to thoroughly review them together.

I purchased two of these and built a Fun82. Two OS.40LA motors and expanded the wing span to 5 feet. We will see how if flys in the spring. Nice kit for the money in my opinion.

I had a similar idea to do an F-82 out of this kit as well or a more involved one out of the Great Planes P-51D Mustang 40 Kit .40-.46,57" (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJ571&P=0) but extend the tail moment some more and correct the profile of the fuselage.

Please post some photos!!!

I decided not to use Kevlar tape to reinforce the landing gear area prior to gluing the fuselage light ply halves, but instead chose 3/4 oz fiberglass and sandwhiched it between the entire fuselage halves when I glued it up. It will widen the assembly but only slightly, and the rest of the fuse build should not be affected.

I build on top of a thick glass table that I lay my magnetic building board on top of for this assembly. I doweled a couple of spots in the fuse before gluing to insure allignment, then C clamped pressure during glue curing.

In the bones...

Completed all the major assembly and repaired the old wing. Used Dubro nylon pinned hinges instead of CA hinges for smoother operation and NO control surface gap!

Haven't decided on color scheme or livery yet but previous model of one of the Blue Nosed *******s of Bodney (Petie 2nd) was/is one of my favorites. Had something to do with my choice of putting the blue OS 46LA engine in it. Maybe do it up in Cripes a Mighty livery...

Also, will run the receiver antenna the same as last Fun 51. and that is around inside the wing then up through the center of the fuse, out the back of the 'canopy' to the top of the verticle stab.

I also created a couple main wing root fillets that will help with the covering....

I too had a couple of these fine airplanes. My first was stock with the exception of a OS .60 and pipe. Definitely a 3D airplane, but a little bit on the heavy side. After many repairs of the fuselage just forward of the wing (landing gear weak point) the engine finally decided to depart during its last flight. I built another some years later and highly modified it. I moved the main gear to the wing spar. I fabricated two wing tanks which fed a header tank just behind the OS .55. I added flaps and modified it to a B model profile. It flew great and once about half of the fuel was gone it became a 3D demon. I sold it to a fellow modeler about a year ago. Unfortunately, he flew it with low receiver batteries leading to its death. Maybe someday I'll build another.

Here is a link to the post on the project. I think you will like this plane, looks like it has good lines to me and builds light enough.

I cracked mine up on Friday trying the second attempt at a maiden. Turning downwind at a moderate altitude, the engine quit, and I didn't think I was high enough to turn into the wind again, so I decided to do a straight ahead emergency landing. At about 5 feet, it snapped and cartwheeled. It broke the fuse fore and aft of the wing[:@]. So much for that.

Dang the tough luck TJR1!!!

From your previous posts, you were plagued with engine trouble on this plane from the start. Too bad about THAT reliability issue. I would not trust the engine to another plane if it was me....

Heres mine. This is my 3rd one. I upgraded the aluminum with fiberglass landing gear.

Thanks, I think they are a set of Dubro landing gear and I got them off a flying buddy. I added some leftover ply from the kit to the fuse where the gear go to strengthen and widen the stance of the gear as well.

They are not Dubro. At least they don't make profile gear for 40 size anymore.

There are these by Carl Goldberg [link=http://www.carlgoldbergproducts.com/accys/gears.html]gear[/link] although in black (color not important really).

I decided to run the receiver antenna completely internally in the wing. I installed a length of tubing to insure the antenna does not cross itself nor do any of the servo or battery leads come close to the antenna. I trial fit all the servos and a first operational check of each.

I ended up rebuilding the ailerons. I used some tapered 1"x1/4" aileron lengths for the back piece, and spaced it up 3/32 inch during the build to come out centered.

I sanded down the plywood engine inserts flush with the fuse just aft of where the engine will mount.

Edge protection

I'm waiting for covering, plastic landing gear and other trinkets so ai decided to add a little edge protection to the ailerons.

A little trick I learned from Dave Platt using a material called G-10 (can get it from [link=http://www.mcmaster.com/#1331t59/=ktx5s]McMaster-Carr[/link]

I used .010" material, but you may get good protection from .005", which I have not tried.

I used a balsa stripper [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAA63&P=7]tool[/link] to precisely cut a 3/16 deep slice down the middle of the trailing edge. I cut a strip just a bit wider of the G-10 to slip into the cut, then used thin
CA to glue into place. I used a long bar sander to sand the edge of the material down to just off the surface of the trailing edge wood and BAM! It will take hits and not damage the edge at all. I'll apply the Monocoat covering over this.

You can use this on leading edges, trailing edges, wherever.

Thanks for double checking. I ordered a [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHBP9]Goldberg Profile Landing Gear[/link] from Tower.
