Sheeting/gluing foam wings
just bought the Sig Kougar and was wondering if it is a good idea to use 30 minute epoxy to glue the wood sheeting onto the foam wings. First foam wing build.

RE: Sheeting/gluing foam wings
You'll get all kinds of opinions on this one. Some people use 30 minute epoxy, others have used contact cement, or water thinned carpenters glue, or something called "sorghum". On my last wing skinning project, I used Gorilla Glue: spread a thin layer of the glue on the wing skin, mist the foam with water, then position the wing skin and apply pressure via pressing the wing in the shucks or vacuum bagging it (which I haven't done, but looks to be very effective). You can use any of polyurethane glues for this, the advantage is that the glue expands to provide (theoretically!) 100% contact between the foam and the wing skin, and that the bond isn't as brittle as epoxy.

Foam wing building 101:
Glue the sheets together to make a skin for each side.
Use a glue that sands well, not CA. Old fashion model airplane cement works very well.
Sand both sides of each sheet smooth. Vacuum and wipe clean with slightly damp cloth.
Lightly sand the wing cores (220 320 grit). Vacuum
Now you are ready to glue the skins. Use method of your choice. Do research it online first.

Hey here is a link to my web page that has how to vids on it. It show how I sheet foam core wings....
It also show how I install spars. If you just want to see sheeting start with vid #3

I have the Sig Kougar also. When I skinned the wings I followed the instructions. I used CA to form the skin panels, Not good. You can see the high spots through the covering.
It also calls for Sig Corebond. This works just as good as any other skinning procedure around.

I used the same as Javier, for my cap, Just be carefull not to spray alot of glue at a spot on the foam core, ie. avoid puddling, the solvents will eat the foam and leave voids.

I have read some of the top scale builders recommendations, and it has been said to use slow cure epoxy spread thinly with a homemade spreader that has small teeth spaced apart to leave only ribbons of epoxy on the surfaces. The slow curing epoxy allows for adjustments to be made before it sets up. This is the method I use.

Has anyone mixed water and GG in an epoxy cup and spread it like you would epoxy, after it has expanded in the cup?
I haven't sheeted wings for over a decade, but I am looking to make a set sometime int he near futureand researching methods.

2 words: gorilla glue. or any other polyurethane glue. it fuses balsa and foam like nothing else. properly done, clamped or vacuum bagged the glue EXPANDS into the foam creating a fused/ welded joint. it doesn't get any better than that. i even glue the wing halves together with gorilla glue.

I love GG and have skinned wings with it many times. However it is not the glue of choice in a vacumn.
If you do the weight in the shucks system you will be very happy, just don't leave any extra in the middle. Also you might want to make good use of a woodpecker to punch some holes in the foam and the balsa. Like I said be sure to get all the extra glue squeegied off the foam otherwise you will see how powerful that foaming action is. Use lots of weight.

I built my Kougar last year and used 3M 77 spray glue for the wing sheeting. In my opinion it's whatever you feel comfortable with then you use that. I would like to try GG sometime though.
Another method is to spread a thin layer of white glue over each surface, wait for the glue to dry and then using an iron( borrow from SWMBO, but don't let her know about it) and iron the sheeting to the foam core.
I did not use the balsa in the kit for the wing sheeting as I did'nt want to waste so much time trimming, fitting, gluing and sanding all those 3" wide pieces together. Instead Ipurchased some 10" X 30 wing sheeting from BUSA and used that. it is pre sanded and very nice to work with. Cuts down on construction time by a ton.

It is my understanding that 3M 77 has changed the formulation of their #77 spray adhesive to include acetone and we all know that acetone dissolves foam. Look on the left side of page for the MSDS with listed ingredients of the new 3M 77 spray formulation.

I am getting ready to try the new ELMER'S Ultimate High Performance Glue for my next lamination project.
