RE: Greatplanes Extra 300s .40 Build/mods
navy not a problem we have a 602 now and sold the 502 this winter, its in the shop and will be getting it out in a week or so, and as soon as it does come out I'll be back to work it looks like lots of wet ground here and 4 days of rain in the forcast almost garantees us to go to work which im ready to dig in this season and get this new plane and systems figured out, however I'll get some pics of the 602 up when it gets back and my wife gets a chance to do some photos of her.
are u doing a build thread on the us? if not i want to see a pic on it when you are done, i've thought about an us 40 but haven't got around to it yet

man navy that thing looks good!
I guess the us has a thick airfoil???? I didn't realize that i thought it would be similar to my extra wing hmmm that gets me to thinking i might need one of these too at the rate im going with the aerobats i'll never get to my warbirds hahaha what engine are you puting on it and are you going with a taildragger or trike gear???

Brent, the common thinking uses two strokes for the US airframes but I prefer 4 strokes when able... I will use the OS Surpass 91 and place the wheels in a taildragger fashion... the wing is a solid build and with the longer moment and efficient tail surfaces, she flies as well as any I have flown; very nice project.

navy thats cool i think if i build one i would go with the trycicle since most of mine are taildraggers(something different for me) again its looking good navy and also for everyone else thats been watching and noticed this pause we have had a death in the family therefore has slowed me down again and am hoping to work on her tomorrow if things are slow at the airport, getting close to go time so im fixing to run out of time if i don't hurry up and finish this darn thing [>:]

Brent, Sorry to hear about the loss. We are used to life putting this hobby on-hold at times. I am caught-up in an issue as well and the balsa just has to wait. Keep the pics coming when your able and don't sweat the small stuff... take care of the important stuff ; the CA will be there when we need it.

RE: Greatplanes Extra 300s .40 Build/mods
thanks navy i'll get the pics up as soon as i can and will be working on her tomorrow hopefully unless another life lesson gets thrown my way again, not to get personal or make excuses but this month has been a rough one with all the things going on we've lost two local ag pilots this winter as well as a couple of family members not to mention the ice storm that has put our plane behind a week and people want us to start friday and it looks like the plane will be coming home thursday and the weahter is going to throw a dampner on that so all in all im hoping to finish the extra this week and get her ready to fly but will probably have to wait on a test flight since this weekend the weather will suck and all so im hoping to catch a redneck favorite (daytona 500) on tv this weekend and relax and get ready to crank up monday wide open again with enough work to keep us behind for atleast a week if not longer soo it may be a month before i get to test her out but when i do I will post it in the thread even though it may be 10 pages deep haha oh well thanks for your concern and support and your right hobbies are down the list compared to the important things like life and yes that ca will always be there for some much needed stress relief
p.s.
hope your life issue gets resolved quickly and positive!

If I were closer, I'd have you teach me how to be an AG pilot so I could brush off my dusty 10,000+ hr plus logbook. I look forward to the future pics... my US is going to be finished well behind yours.

RE: Greatplanes Extra 300s .40 Build/mods
navy, well i doubt you would need much training to be an ag pilot after all my dad says you just have to be crazy enough to crawl in it hahaha, well there is more to it than that but its a job and i enjoy it, but im the same type of person that likes mowing the yard, and tend to like solitude at work and not much on people interaction thats why i fly the plane and my brother manages the business, (keeps the fights down both of us not wanting to do the others job hahaha) well u may finish yours before mine and if i do finish mine you still may end up flying yours first, we have 260 acres of spraying to do and fertilizer is stacked up for monday i beleive soo this weekend will be busy getting ready
well enough chit chat here is the reason for the thread, pics of where i am at now you will see in the pics the size of the ailerons and how i installed them on the tail also the rudder mod on the plane all is left before covering is beveling the control surfaces, i have weighed my servo package compared to the 4 standard servos and i am 2 ounces lighter ! this is awsome since i have 5 servos and dual ailerons now with the mini's i think i may end up doing this on more of my planes after i see how she flys
well pics are in the next replies

Here is a pic of the dual aileron bays, and other pics of the plane before covering and also with the current extra which will be stripped of covering next and try to attempt to get the oil soaked balsa un soaked and do the aileron mods and make a few repairs to the structure and go back with new covering scheme , however the current one has the stock set up on the ailerons and rudder

RE: Greatplanes Extra 300s .40 Build/mods
covering should start this weekend hopefully and i'll get some pics of those up as soon as i can with the cowling and all that, i ordered a fiberglass cowl from tower that goes on the phoenix arf extra it seems to have the same dimensions as the one that comes with the kit, and since the plastic cowl usually doesn't last long im going to go with it and sand the paint down on the arf one and paint it up to match my covering for the extra I also will use the phoenix models wheel pants off the decathlon i think they're all the same i think but have used them on my other models and seem to have A LOT less trouble out of them and seem to hold up better, well if anyone has more questions or curious about anything else just ask i'll try to answer as best as i can, hopefully this plane will be the best flyer out of the 5 i've built so far
here is the link to my photobucket you can see all the pics of the build plus others of my other models and of my brother"s and my full scale planes, there is a pic of my gp cap 232 with the same aileron mod and there is a video also of the cap and others as well to see how it flys, also the cap has an oops at the end so i know i'll get some grief of that but those three vid's are all maidens of those three planes on the same day

Update got all the rest of the parts in to finish the plane and redo the other extra, The Phoenix Models arf extra cowl fits perfectly on the kit, 15 bucks is a pretty good deal i thought, just scuff it up cut the holes for the exhaust and the engine, paint and its ready to go no bondo, or gluing!

also i have started stripping the covering off of my other extra so now I will be working on two at the same time probably oh well flying season is here and i need these two done and ready

RE: Greatplanes Extra 300s .40 Build/mods
this is where I am at right now, the cowling is off of a 40 size phoenix models extra, its light and fiberglass alot better than the abs cowl although the cowl is a little smaller it still fits nice as long as you don't use the cowling blocks and if you do you will need to sand them down a little bit, i decided to put an 1/8 inch piece of ply on both sides for proper spacing.

Brent... great job on the covering and I agree with the cowl choice; much better. Will you have a pilot or not? What type graphics, if any? You have done quite abit.

My wife is going to paint the pilot and yes graphics will go on as soon as the cowl is painted also I will be tinting the canopy as well thanks for the compliment navy I am going to put the firebirds graphics on there you can look them up on the web by searching firebirds delta team . I am recovering my other one to look like the blue on. I am going to checker board the rudders on them with the base color to that airplane though. Not to crazy about blue and white checker on red plane

RE: Greatplanes Extra 300s .40 Build/mods
Well I know it has been a long time since the last post and update but thats because I have not had much time to work on it due to the ag season starting up however this past weekend i had a chance to get her finished up along with recovering the old extra in the mean time so here are the pics of the new and the old plane, the new one with mods is the red and the blue one is the stock extra with stock setup except for beafed up landing gear and fiberglass cowl and pants. the red one is lighter so the lightning stuff was worth it, i think its about 6 to 8 ounces haven't flown them yet wating on a good day to get to maybe this coming weekend
