Default Guillows SBD-3 Dauntless =>2<= Radio Control

Hello RC Universe'ers!

Has anyone, as of the last year or two, converted a Guillows SBD Dauntless (or Hellcat for that matter, as they have similar body style) into radio control? Reason I ask is that I'm doing the same here in Minnesota and would like to kick off a discussion with anyone interested in sharing building tips & advice. It's a relaxing and challenging project that has a few end goals in mind:

[ul][*]Full functioning rc controls (aileron, rudder, elevator, landing gear)[*]Scale body details[*]Working bomb drop (remotely, of course)
[/ul]

I'm having a blast doing it and just wanted to share my build. Any takers?

Oh, I forgot one more thing. The biggest goal I'm shooting for is to have NO exposed control surfaces (i.e. control horns, cables, etc.) showing.

Good freakin' luck with the control horns. Better contact McDonnel Douglas.

There's a lot of info on the 1/2a forum about Guillows conversions, so head on over and see what search turns up.

I converted a Guillows Zero to Glow / RC a few years ago and had a blast building and flying it. The key is to minimize weight by questioning the need for every piece of wood, glue, etc. Keep the wing loading below 15 oz/sf and you'll have a winner.

At this scale I'm not sure internal controls are feasible, but I'd love to see you prove me wrong! Since the control surfaces are so thin you have a very small moment arm, which makes assembly and linkages very difficult. The elevator is certainly do-able, but the ailerons and/or rudder would be quite difficult.

Ram Jet - Nay sayer

eroc144 - Thanks for the encouragement!

I've been working on the mechanics and have a few relatively solid ideas for the elevator and ailerons. My current blocks are the rudder; for the size of available space to create movement, and the landing gear; not due to space but because in weighing the needed for proper location of a power supply vs. having too high of CG. I won't go into detail...I'll just post photos when I get them. But I think you'll be surprised by what you'll see when all is said and done. Oh, and eroc144, just like your signature says, "Nothing is impossible when you don''t know what you're talking about"
