Unionville Hobbies - Otter
I am constructing the Unionville Hobbies - Otter (6 ft version). One portion of he plan indicates that the cowling is to be mounted flush while another portion shows the cowl overlapping part of the fuselage.
The engine that is being installed is a Saito 56 and I require 4.6 inches of space from the firewall to the spinner plate while the cowling is only 3.7 inches long.
If I overlap the fuse by .5 inches I will require the mounting blocks for the cowling to be 1.5 inches (epoxy to the firewall and extend far enough up to allow for mounting of the cowl).
Has anyone experienced a similar problem with this model, or have i screw something up.
Thanks for all your assistance

I have their Beaver and use a Magnum 52 and fly at half throttle. Unionville builds very light, mostly stick built.
Njjd, You are ok in the build, if you notice on the plans, they show a 2 stroke for power, thus the short cowl. I had to build out on the front of the fire wall, extending the area over the engine to allow for the cowl to fit. The other option is to look for another round cowl from one of the speciality guys and cut to size.

The otter will fly just fine on a Saito 56. Mine was overpowered with a 46 two stroke. The cowl mounts flush with the fuselage. This is a very nice flying airplane.
Cheers!

JimO.
Thanks for the info. I had done exactly as you indicated, extending the fuselage past the cowl another .75 inches (total of 1.5 inches past the firewall). I subsequently have shortened the fuse to approximately 1.3 inches past the firewall and this is allowing for a .5 inch overlap with the cowling.
Did you have any issues with vibration between the fuse and cowl?
Hoping to finish building prior to this weekend and then start covering. I will post pictures once I am complete.
Thanks for you help.
