SSE Racing Plane?
I am building my second SSE, and I'm gonna put a cowl on it and turn the engine 90*. I was looking at some of the pictures in the photo gallery, and it occured to me that with a nice cowl, it really has the looks of a racer. Would it be worth the time to build a wing set with a different airfoil, and see how it performs? Maybe split a .40 size Mustang wing, and build it to mate with the SSE fuselage? I think it would be pretty cool! By the way, that's NOT my plane in the pic. I saved it from the photo gallery so I could upload it here to show you what I mean. It looks like a racer to me, but the airfoil's obviously too thick.

I'm not sure if this guy is still producing these, but have you see the Smokey? It's a kit that includes different wings, hatch and fiberglass cowl. Very nice looking and the wings are plug and play...you can switch between the Smokey wings and the stock wings whenever you choose. Pretty neat.

It's mine-er, was mine. I'm flattered guys Lost that plane a couple of years ago when an aileron servo locked up. Buried the nose right up to the wing. It had an ST .45 and an enlarged rudder (+1 1/2") That SSE was noticably faster than other SSE's at the field, a bit more aerodynamic, I think. I always wanted to mod another with a thinner airfoil and move the cockpit back a bit. Hope this helps.

Sparky, That's a custom FG cowl behind a 2 1/2" spinner. A thinner wing is something I want to try. As long as the root rib will fit with the joiner tube it should be no trouble at all.

RE: SSE Racing Plane?
Good comments on YEL's SSE. It is the sharpest looking sport plane that I've seen which convinced me to get the SSE kit and build it with the same cowl. I'm really grateful for YEL's advice on how to build it, it was the key to success for the cowl. It's taken me forever to build ( work and other projects at home) but it has been a hoot. I haven't built one in over 28 years. I mounted a Saito FA 65 head down to give the cowl the same look on both sides. I've been flying this same engine on an old Kavalier inverted for the last year. Maybe I'll finish it sometime this century and post some pics. BTW is it me or is Monokote really difficult to deal with?

You could always make a"built up" balsa cowl like I did on mine...got inspired from Yel914's pictures, and It only took a few extra hours to do! I think it looks soooo much better than the stock set up. I also shortened the canopy a bit and added 1" to the rudder, as well as a pull-pull set up. Here are a few pics for ideas... -Craig

Or make a cowl out of a coke bottle.
Pretty easy, but yu have the bonus of if you ever change the engine over, you simply form another cowl around the plug.
