Default Fiberglass painting question

I am about to start on a Goldberg Chipmunk kit. I bought a replacement cowl and wheel pants from Fiberglass Specialties. I would like some advice on what primer and paint would work without spending a fortune on auto paint. I have bought small amounts of auto paint from Southern RC and it worked OK but I was just wondering what other choices there might be out there. Does anyone have experience with Klass Kote? I have a large spray gun for primer and an airbrush with all the attachments, filters and guages. Thanks

I prime my cowls with Plasticoat sandable primer. I usually apply a couple of coats and sand it with 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper. As for paints, I have used Latex Paint, Top Flite Lustercoat in the spray can, as well as automotive paint. The Lustercoat is probally the cheapest and the easiest. Good Luck, Dave

If you are looking for something to save money then Klass Kote isn't even something you should look at. Way beyond outstanding stuff but they are very prowd of there product!! Go check out the prices on there web site and get ready for sticker shock. It does thin to about 50/50 so it goes a very long ways.
If I use the Lustercoat or Ultracote paint I always use there primer too!!! I gave up trying to figure out what will or will not work and just buy the same make product.

I pretty much use Rust-Oleum. It has a great shine, is fuel proof (make sure it sets for a few days to cure) It comes in most colors & it's cheap' I have all the automotive stuff ( spray guns, compressor, etc. It takes less time & money to just go to the hardware store & buy a can. I failed to mention; Rustoleum is compatable with just about all other paints. How many guys out there have sprayed a primer & followed with the finish coat only to have it "winkle-up" Then you just start all over.

Another paint you may want to consider is the water-based stuff from Nelson http://www.nelsonhobby.com/paint.html

I've used it on two planes now and I really like the stuff, goes on with a foam brush, cleans up with water and is tough as nails when dry. I put a Fiberglass Specialties cowl on my Balsa USA Fokker Triplane and it was primed with Rustoleum gray auto primer, then the Nelson paint was brushed on. I'll try to find a photo so you can see how it looks. The whole plane is painted with Nelson paint and foam brushes.
