Default Broke my Corsair

I was wondering if a Corsair has any weird tendancy's ?? I went to take off, got it about a foot off the ground and it rolled hard left. Just wondering if this was normal and if so what helps ??

You need to get it up to speed, don't pull it off the ground you gotta fly it off, if you are slow if will snap as you now know []

no more than any other warbird.worse thing to do is try to not correct with airlerons.need opposite rudder and lower the nose.

Ok, more speed and use rudder if needed. I thought the plane was going pretty fast on the ground but could be wrong. Yep, she rolled left and I started right aileron to correct, oops !!

At relative low speed the ailerons are not very efective that is when the rudder is best option the propeller blast is blowing across it
giving it the best controll to counter rool

At low speeds, you'll have a higher angle of attack. When you try to lift a wing, the aileron on that side goes down. This increases the angle of attack on that wing even more, and the wing stalls causing it to roll even more. The only way to lift a wing when you are close to stall, is to use the rudder. You will not aggravate the situation when you use the rudder.

No matter what type of plane you are flying, using ailerons at too low of an airspeed (high angle of attack) will result on one wing stalling before the other and the beginning of a spin. Some planes, like trainers, will behave differently due to wing designs that still allow aileron control at low airspeeds. One way to do this is add washout to the wing, so the root stalls first and gives the familiar nose drop. This means that the wingtip with the aileron will not yet be stalled, and will still give a fairly normal feel to the plane.

Speed is your friend, both for take off and landing. Good Luck, Dave

I think the speed at time of take off was the key. I thought it was fast enough but maybe not. I'll patch it up and give it another go.

Considering that you thought you had ample speed at takeoff, was this the maiden flight for your Corsair? If so, check to see if your ailerons might be reversed, it is easy to do even if that might be the last thing you think you would ever overlook. However, I do agree that it was most likely a stall, but it is worth checking. It might save your plane after repairing and attempting another flight.

Which Corsair was this? I have flown several, and some are more difficult than others. Believe it or not, my CMP Corsair 50 is very nice and stable with my Rossi 60 on it. But the CMP's groung handling sucks when using even high quality retracts. I crashed my great planes corsair after a hard roll on takeoff. The post mortem discovered a twisted wing following a very humid spring and summer. I should have checked it much closer.

A guy here named Corsair Jock used to tell me that the corsair just LOVES to snap to the left just after take off. A product of engine torque, prop vortices and taking off sooner than I should have. I personally think he cursed me since I snapped mine just weeks after reading the post.

My next will be the TF gold kit. I already have the engine and the CJM retracts purchased.

Multicasting is on the rite track. Which Corsair kit/arf is it ?

I've had several Corsairs, (all kits) and all flew differently.
This was mainly due to the wing loading. A tad of down
thrust at the engine will tame the beast a bit. The ground
handeling will always an issue with a Corsair.

Good luck,
Roby

Its a TopFlight 60 size corsair. thinking about it I had one other plane do the same thing a few years back. It was a small plane with alot of engine. I got a little cocky and took off low speed under high power, was not a good thing. I'll get it fix easy enough and she'll be up not over.

Keep the speed up and don't fly it like a sport plane
and you'll do fine.

Glad to hear someone else had to figure out the tip stall of a Corsair.

Dont feel bad, it crashed mine 5 times before I figured out I was trying to pull it off the ground before I have enough speed.

Since my corsair was a 1/12 scale combat plane (Pico kit), the only damage was the 2 nylon screws holding the main wing on that broke before wing damage occured and my EGO[&o]

Now when I fly this I make sure I use all the runway before applying up

Good luck

Larry
