Hey SDP, Love your build thread. I have some Cherry 1/6 ply that is really pretty if you like I can sent you some. I'm building 1/4 scale J-3.

Stopped by WoodCraft on the way home today for some plywood. I looked for any unusual wood in the turning blanks and found two.
The first one is a chunk of Moa. This would look great in a dash or instrument panel. Love the lines of it. Looks like a late sun set.
The second piece was a heart breaker. It's a really knurled piece of black and white Ebony. Really nice. But alas it was checked all most all the way through. Starting at the side with the best grain structure.

Thats some pretty wood. Much nicer than the piece of cherry that I have. I had a beautiful piece of carpathian burle I entended to use on a Bushby mustang that I built a few years back but alas it dried out and fell apart. Oh well. I'll probably keep my J-3 simple and stock with the correct instruments

Tom, great looking Instrument Panel's!

Thanks, Ron ! They are something that I enjoy doing. Once you get past the "instruments" purchase, the rest is inexpensive, involving mostly time and imagination.

Some really nice panels on here!
Right now I am just waiting for the outside temp to come up and the painting will continue. My plan for this morning is to get the elevator stab masked and painted, completing the fuselage, then move onto the wings. I will likely spray the flaps and ailerons along with the stab.

While waiting I assembled the motor, spacer, and ESC. I also soldered up the connectors for the connection between the motor and ESC.
After that portion of the assembly was done I temporarily attached the motor to the plane and put on the cowl. I was happy to see everything is lining up despite a complete change in motors / spacers. I was also really happy to see the improvement in the ground clearance. There is now enough clearance it would take an angle of about 40 degrees down to impact the prop with the ground, something I hope never happens.
It is warming up nicely outside so I will begin masking off the stab and painting in a little bit.

I'm not really sure why all the guys started flying gas stuff, likely cost. All I did was recommend they not buy large glow motors and to give a Zenoah a try. Those Zenoah motors really are great. I know Dick was tired of paying top dollar for the glow stuff and wanted a larger plane. The Zenoah 20 is really cheap for him to fly. The motor uses about 4 oz of fuel per flight.

Here is the painted Elevator Stabilizer. Was a bit of a chore masking off the stab but all went well. Next time I should make it a plug-in tail and this would be a lot easier!
I also sprayed the flaps.
The wings will have to wait. I will most likely spray the bottom of the wings tomorrow.

Phil,
Your PA-18 is really looking great! Can hardly wait to see the maiden flight!
Did you say you checked with Timber for your material for the instrument panel. At onetime when we had our cabinet shop we could buy pieces of Veneer and they really had a great selection of small pieces of exotic woods.

I went to Woodcraft in search of the wood for my panel. They had plenty but I was just being "picky". I think I will go to Woodworker's Source to make the purchase. I need to get some other wood too, for another project, and they are definately the best place I have found.

Woodworkers Source was a great place to buy wood as well! I am sure what ever you find will look good in your plane.
Those instrument panels that are showing up on your build blog sure look good! Lots of great talent out there!

Stab was dry enough to throw the elevators on for a little photo shoot.
Really happy with how the scheme is turning out. I'll be spraying the bottom of the wings in a few hours.
My plan is to spray the bottom of the wings today, go flying tomorrow, then spray the top of the wings on Tuesday. At that point the paint, with expect ion of some minor details around the windows, will be complete.
I'm still up in the air on the N Numbers. I have found photos of large N Numbers on the side of the fusealge and I have found photos of small N Numbers on the rudder only.

Here are the two types of N Numbers I have found. I tried to look up the current rule, which I think will allow for either type, but like most government regulations it is as clear as mud... Any thoughts or insight?
I like the more simple look of the N Numbers on the rudder only.
Keep in mind, my plane is not a scale plane so either would work. I have never found a Super Cruiser scheme on a Super Cub but I liked the scheme so much I had to use it. I just dont want to look like an idiot with something totally wrong on my plane.

it looks like the one with the small numbers on the vertical stab on the float plane, the horizontal stab is red.
On the other one with the large numbers on the fuse, the horizontal stab is the cream color
Looking great, awesome work

Hello,
There used to be a standard for registration markings on full size airplanes.
I do not know now if that is still mandatory.
Two styles of characters were approved.
One in which the contour of the characters were straight lines going up-down , going horizontal and going at 45 degrees.
The other style was as above except the 45 degrees was tangential curves.
Those standards also involved a minimum size and a proportional width.
If anyone is interested I can post pictures in jpg format which can be changed in size to accommodate the size of the models.

I found post 593 after posting this one.
I was typing this one when 593 got posted so my writing was not influenced by the post previous to this one.

Go to www.airliners.net and search piper cub or super cub, you can look at full scale jobs till you go to sleep. You will finally decide to do what looks best to you. My personal choice was numbers on the side of the fuselage and bottom of the wing which is pretty normal. Unless your going to compete in scale competition it dosen't really matter.

Great info on the N Numbers guys!
I had to wait a little while longer than planned for the sun to come out allowing me to paint. Despite some wind outside I went for it. I had plans to spray the ailerons along with the bottom of the wing but I started to run low on mixed paint so I omitted them for now. So, when I paint the tops on Tuesday I will mix a little extra so I can hit the ailerons. I am really happy with the paint.
I made some little stands to place the wings on while on the saw horses. The stands are made from some scrap MDF and some round insulation foam. I just wanted to protect the wings as to not damage the covering. Took all of 15 minutes to make.
In the photo the wing is in my garage. They were, however, painted outside on top of the saw horse. I really don't think the wife would like some red paint sprayed across her car.

RE: Sig 1/4 J3 Kit converted to PA-18 Super Cub (Build)
When I painted my wings, I used wooden shishkabob scews glued into 4' X6" plywood scraps and poked my wings into the trailing edge so I could paint both sides at once. It worked great since I was also using Robart hinge points. The scews are around 3/16" dia, the same as large hinge points.
Just another way to do it.

SunDevil, I prefer the smaller N # on the rudder area. The rule has to do with the year mfg date I think. Attached is a picture of the J-3 Cub my son & I used to own back in 2006 that the new owner totally rebuilt to new condition in 2010.
He still used the small N # when repainted which looks better on Cub aircraft. (personal opinion) ..
Thanks,
