I finished up the paint on the wings today. All went well.

I have quite a bit of painting supplies left so there should be no issue with getting the model completed. I think the only stuff left for paint is the windshield and the upper cabin.

I put some long bolts into the holes / blindnuts for the struts allowing me to set the wings down on the bolts and not the bottom of the wing.

Looks good,
FYI you can also get the same ends in 2-56 (threaded and solder on). I use the same system for my 33% Waco and 33% J-3.
Later!!

I really wanted to see what the brace wires looked like on the plane so I went ahead and installed them. I'm really happy with how the paint on them turned out. It was just split second decision to paint them.

SDP, beautiful job on the build. I started reading from page 1 and couldn't stop.

I am currently building an old Dynaflite PA-18 kit and have really enjoyed your work.

Are those Dubro 6" balloon tire you are planning on using? Give is kinda a "Bush Plane" look. That is just exactly what I am after.

Thanks FlyBy8!

The tires are the 6" Dubro inflatable tires.

I like the bush plane look too.

Here are a few pics I got at last years Copperstate Fly-in, a great time!

Now that most of the painting is complete I am going to start the final assembly of the plane. I decided to start off with the wings. I just completed the final assembly of the servos / hatches. Next I will solder up some servo wire extensions then install the servos into the wings. After that I will glue in the aileron and flap hinges / surfaces. Then on go the struts.

Just finished up the final installation of the Aileron and Flap Servos into each wing. I used a piece of string with a fishing sinker weight on one end to thread the wires through the wing. I just dropped it down the hole in each wing until it went from the aileron servo bay to the root. Then I taped the extensions to the string and pulled it through, easy.

All bolts got a little lock-tight.

After I mount the wings to the fuselage I'll cut each extension to the correct length and solder up the ends. I am using some DIY extensions from AirWild. I have used them before and they work great. A little time consuming but you do get a superior extension.

I crimp the extension pins onto a pre-tinned wire then heat up the pin melting the two together.

Each connection point is secured with some heat-shrink over the connectors.

Moving along..... I just finished installing the flaps. Hinges were installed with some 30 minute epoxy.

First I used a coat hangar to put some epoxy down the hinge hole. Then I put some epoxy on the barbed portion of the hinge, wiping it off until only the barbs were full (Prevents squeeze out as hinge is inserted). Then I put the flap on the wing. All went well.

I'm going to wait about an hour for the flap glue to setup then I will move onto the ailerons.

No need to protect the hinge knuckle as it is not in contact with the wing or the flap.

My favorite part too..... All that thought / work coming together for the first time. Good to see everthing turning into an airplane!

I can't wait to get to the struts... That is when I will put the wings onto the fusealge for the first time after paint.

SDP, those wings look great!

You really hit it with that shade of red. Can't wait to see her completed and out in the daylight.

Those servo hatches came out awesome also. Love the colored horns and the high quality fasteners your using.

Those exposed hinges on your flaps look better than I thought they would. On my PA-18 convention I think I'm going with off set hinge plates on the flaps. I'll have to do some mock ups to see what the best way for me to make the plates with the hingpoints is.

I was shocked to see some Robart ¼ scale landing gear for the Balsa USA Cub's 7-¾" fuselage come up on ebay this week. I grabbed a pair since they seem to be always back ordered.

More progress...
This morning I put the struts back together and bolted them up to the wings. In an effort to get the wings 100% done I will install them onto the fuselage, cut the servo wires to length, and put the connectors on the extensions. After that I can plug the servos in, adjust the centers, then make the pushrods. For the rods I am using some carbon fiber rod with titanium ends and 4-40 ball links. The pushrod set was ordered from Central Hobbies.
Lunch time but more to follow.....

I mounted up the wings and cut the servo extensions to length. I took the opportunity to take the plane out into the sun for a little photoshoot.

Actually Super Cubs have 40 deg of flap deflection, not too far off

if you can get about 20 mph wind down the runway and the 40 deg of flap plus a bit of throttle you can pretty much hover !!!!

My goal was to get the wings 100% done today, I got to 99%. Servo extensions are complete and color coded.... I put a different color heatshrink on each wire before I put on the servo connector.

Then I made the pushrods for the ailerons and flaps but they are drying now. The only thing left is to install the rods.

First I centered up the servos (Flap servo was set full back which is 0 degrees flaps) then I measured the distance for the rods. The carbon tube was cut to length then cleaned in an alcohol bath. After everything dried I used a toothpick to work some JB Weld down into the tube. After I was sure the inner walls of the tube, in the area of the titanium ends, was covered I coated the titanium end with JB Weld. Then I worked each end into the tubes. The rods have to be clamped because of the air pressure in the tube. The JB Weld is thick enough it takes a little while for the air to escape. The pressure wants to push the ends back out of the tube.

Pictured are the rods for the right wing.

JB Weld, like epoxy, cleans up with some rubbing alcohol. I just make a mess and wipe it down once clamped. I have done several of these type rods before and they are rock solid.
