One of my Facebook friends just installed a 36cc gas engine in his 1/4 cub. I'm sure he will see the same problems.
Is that the PTE by chance? That's what I am putting in my 1/4 scale Bud Nosen cub.

You know it! Mine is also going to be a tug and have flaps and extended the wing span. Should be interesting and fun!

I'm also very curious on how much solartex you needed

I'm at least ordering the 10m roll but need to know if I should get a 2m or 5m roll on top of that

It might just be the light, but in the first pic it looks like he put a '3d' spinner on like I did.

Sig Koveral is a lot less expensive and all you have to do is apply your own adhesive to the airframe. Also, polyester dress liner is dirt cheap and equally easy to use. My Sig 1/4 J3 is covered in Koveral and sig dope. JMTCW.

Video from todays Maiden flight: This is completely unedited , so bear with all the comments from the peanut gallery. I did not film the final landing but got three touch and goes.

Well guys......

At the beginning of this thread I said I was going to find the Super Cub hidden in the very large box of wood. I can proudly say the plane now has four flights on it.

I still need to figure out the method of takeoff that the plane really likes. I had a couple ground loops with the plane and I ended up scratching my poor wingtip, both actually (Already repaired). I think I just need to ease onto the power while holding the tail down until the plane gets some speed..... Then relax the pressure and let the plane accelerate on the mains. On the first takeoff I did what I usually do on my other Cub, hammer the gas, and while I did get away with it I really don't think it was the best choice. The plane's first takeoff was about 45 degrees to the runway.

The electric motor supplies plenty of torque which is probably too much for the rudder to compensate for when applied in a "Blast off" manner.

The landings were a non-issue. The flaps work perfect and I needed about 5 clicks of correction (Flap to Elevator Mixing) at half flaps and 10 clicks of correction at full flap to maintain level flight with the flaps deployed.

Level flight was maintained at just under 1/2 throttle. An eight minute flight uses about 1/2 the battery capacity. Motor came down warm but not hot.

I had to add about four clicks of down elevator trim for level flight at 1/2 throttle, no aileron trim, and no rudder trim.

Hopefully there are some videos / photos pending. I know the cameras were rolling.

One very happySunDevilPilot!

Maiden voyage postponed until tomorrow. Today there were moments of relative calm and moments of extreme dust devil action.

We did get to maiden my friend's Aerowork's Sport Cub. He arrived before me and had his plane all set-up and ready to go. It is powered with a DA50 on a canister style exhaust. I was really impressed with the sound / power of this combination. The power of the DA50 made the plane a little difficult to land, it just wanted to keep flying. I finally got it down, after about 15 go arounds, and forced the plane to stay on the ground with some down elevator. Then I killed the motor. The exhaust is extremely quiet.

SunDevilPilot

My buddy had one of the Aeroworks Sport Cubs and sold it for that reason. He also had the DA 50, as that is the recomended engine. It was a floater too. Flaps were very effective though.

Plus + ___The wings of my Skybolt are covered with dress liner also.
About 2 1/2 yards 54 inch wide cost me less than $10.00 and had some left.

The fuselage and tail of my Spectra sailplane has used some of that left over and I still have some.

Mine has a Quadra 42, it is 20 years plus old w/o problems... It is a beauty to kill the engine up there, and glide around and land the thing. Big wing helps:-) Yes, I had to put weight in the tail. Mine is a Balsa USA... It slows down w/o problems at all.

Would I choose to put that heavy chunk of matal in a cub (mine is a j-3 turned into a PA-11), no I had the Quadra 42 when I got the kit:-)

Hey congratulations on the maiden Phil!

She looked great in the air!

Thanks for the wonderful job you did this build thread also. Keeping up with a build thread is about as hard as the build. Nice to see a long term build through to completion. I'm sure there will be many Cubs built with the aide of this thread.

Hey Don't worry about those wing tip scratches, they are perfectly scale.

SunDevilPilot,

I enjoyed watching the video of the maiden half a dozen times just like I enjoyed following your work progress.

The two wheel landings were "classics" and kept contact with the runway long enough to prove your were well in control as an expert pilot..

I join all others to congratulate you.
