My friend Jerry got some photos of the maiden flight. I need to ask him for the full size photos but here they are scaled down a bit.

I'll be ordering my next kit in the coming weeks so once I get started on the plane, a 1/4 Scale Balsa USA Nieuport 28, I'll post a link to that thread here.

Great video and pics! How much solartex would you recommend ordering to cover a 1/4 cub to be on the safe side? Cheers!

I used about 12 meters... I used the majority of two 5 meter rolls and part of a third.

My friend Mike just uploaded the other video captured on maiden day. Man, if I would have crashed it the event would have been covered from all angles.

    Thanks for the video Mike!

I'm committed to the Balsa USA 1/4 Nieuport 28 now, just ordered it.

I will look at the plans when it arrives and decide between an electric model vs. a gas powered model. I already have a Zenoah 26 I purchased for the Cub and that would be perfect for the Nieuport.

We'll see.... Again, when I get the kit I'll start a new thread and provide a link here.

I didn't think a 10m roll would quite do it. Now I have to decide if I want just 15m to be safe or 20m. I'm not sure if I want to use solartex on my waco yet until I use it on the cub, so I'm not sure if I should order that much extra...

RE: Sig 1/4 J3 Kit converted to PA-18 Super Cub (Build)

Hi Sundevilpilot, Congrats on a beautiful well planned project. I have been watching since the start. This winter I dug out my Sig J3 1/4 scale kit.
Using your article made some changes to the kit to turn out a super cub. Changed the rudder shape and put ears on the stab, laminated outline.
The fuselage is stock except for straight front end. Fibermaster glass cowl. Stock wire L.G. no faring between the wires. Engine OS Ft 1.6 4 cycle.
The wing stock modified for flaps, hoener ( spelling?) wing tips as per photo of Tundra super cub. Have to buy 6" wheels. Will fabricate
aux fuel tank/cargo pod to mount under the fuse. Tail section is done except for hinging, Fuse is framed and waiting for wing attachment.
The wing mostly complete, needs sanding and tip carving/shaping before the ailerons and flaps are removed and finished. Covering will be white solartex
red trim. Thanks for the guidance. Amost enjoyable BUILD!
    Joe

RE: Sig 1/4 J3 Kit converted to PA-18 Super Cub (Build)

Today I got some more photos from my friend Jon. The photos were taken during the planes second outing at the field. I am starting to get a feel for the plane and I am learning to overcome some of it's quirks (It likes to ground loop on landing). I have discovered a nice three point landing with this model is the key to success.

FYI: My Nieuport 28 kit will be here tomorrow. Thread will be appearing soon!

It looks great SDP. Needs a pilot so it doesnt look like a possessed piece of machinery. Im sure the pic and movies don't do it justice. Im looking forward to seeing the Nieuport build.

I wish to add my congratulations to you for a very successful project. You have provided an interesting and informative journal. I have not built for over 40 years and with your permission, I would like to copy your model. I may not have the same results, but I will try. I have learned so much from these postings, that I have found the courage to start my project. I love the cub, in all its variations. Good luck with your Nieuport build. I will follow that tread just to watch and learn.

    Thanks a lot Pete!

I would be great to see you building again! Without question you can use my thread as a guide and feel free to "copy" my plane. Much of my building methods were learned by examining other planes and incorporating some of their techniques into my plane, picking and choosing what I though were the best method given each problem I encountered.

    Good Luck!!!

SDP- Thumbs up on a very nicely built cubby! I've enjoyed following this build all the way through. What are the final specs on your 'lectric setup, & what kind of flight times are you getting?

How bout some "N" numbers & bungee covers?

Right now I'm flying for 8 minutes and using about 2200 mAh from the 5000 mAh packs. The motor produces about 2400 Watts at full power. For the most part I fly around at 1/2 throttle.

I have some small details to finish up on the Cub, which includes some painting (Maybe some N Numbers)

Well guys, I stalled the Cub after a touch and go and spun it in. By the time I realized what was happening and got the spin stopped the ground was too close and I impacted wings level about 20 degrees down angle. The impact broke out both wing roots, trashed the cowl, destroyed the struts, and broke the bottom fuselage stringers. The damage was extensive enough I have no interest in repairing it. All the electronics and hardware has been stripped.

Sad the Cub had such a short life.
