RE: Sig 1/4 J3 Kit converted to PA-18 Super Cub (Build)
Sundevilpilot,
Hi Ants, I have followed your build with much jelousy.
Incredible work, congratulations.
My question Ants, is about the window coaming.
I have got some of that from Tower, but 1 size is too small, the other is too big.
How did you manage to fit the windows on yours?
I look forward to your reply Ants,
Many thanks,
Sidekick.
how did you find fitting it on the thin window?

The windshield on mine is made from material purchased from Balsa USA. It is .020 thick. The thinner material makes the installation of the windshield much easier. The Sig material provided with the kit is .030. I use the thicker material for the side windows.
The trim I used it Fourmost 1/8" U-Trim. It can be found here:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXG852&P=ML
I just frame the windows with the trim, install them into the plane, and run a bead of glue along the inner edge. The trim hides the glue.
Speaking of the windshield!!!! It is installed again!! I just finished up that process and now it is just sitting as the glue dries. Glad it went without issue, I still hate that part.

Yup, the thinner Balsa USA stuff for the windshield.
I will likely be able to reuse the side windows I made previously. I need to clean them up a bit but they look pretty good still.

I was a little under the weather today so I stayed home from my regular flying. While taking it easy I cleaned up the previously made windows, stripped off the glue from the edges, and reinstalled them into the fusealge. It was a real time saver using the original windows.
The top glass will need to be remade. That will get done tomorrow.
The windshield glue on the A Pillar is not totally cured, still white, but it was enough I could release the clamps and install the side windows.

I would say SDP that you prevailed over your arch nemesis...hope your feeling better.

Cowl is back on.
I think I will go make some bungee covers for the landing gear. I made a set for my 1/5th Scale and I think I need some for this one.
Almost done!

It is not perfect but neither was the first one, I'm glad the windshield is on but I wish there was a pre-moulded one.

Will you use the balsa USA method or have you dele oped another plan for the bungee covers?
Will you use the balsa USA method or have you dele oped another plan for the bungee covers?
I am going with the "Bag" style bungee covers.
Here is how they are made...
Step 1 - Draw a plan.
Step 2 - Transfer the plan to the cloth. I used one of the wife's chalk pencils. Then cut out the cloth.
Step 3 - Iron down the creases (Makes sewing a little easier if you're not fighting the cloth as it goes into the sewing machine).
Step 4 - Sew the edges, leaving space for the zip ties in the ends.
Step 5 - Fold the cover in half and sew it into a tube. Start and end the stitch on the previously made zip tie pocket stitches (You don't want to sew the pocket closed)
Step 6 - Roll the covers outside in / inside out.
Step 7 - Cut the ends of the zip tie pockets allowing you to put the zip ties into the slots.
Optional Step - After you are done watch some hockey and drink some vodka to redeem some of your manhood! A chain saw and a tree may be another option.

Not much to report here. I made the top glass and painted the red frame onto it. Next weekend the paint will be totally cured and I'll install the glass onto the top of the fuselage.
When I did the glass on the Version 1 Cub I did not paint the glass, thinking I would go back to it. Of course, that never happened. This should help with some of the "Finishing Touches" that are often the hardest to make ones self do.

This is about it for the repairs... Top glass is being glued in.
I learned from the first go around and had some wood bars and clamps ready to go. First I clamped a piece of wood to the underside of the spar / alignment pin on both sides of the fuselage. When that was in place I put glue on the forward half and dropped the glass in place. A few clamps / bars later and I glued up the rear half and clamped that down. No problem!
The only thing left to do is install the receiver, a few extensions, then put the servos back into the wings. I still have all the linkage for the ailerons and flaps so that should be real easy.
Servos will be purchased soon and the receiver will come whenever Futaba released the 14SG radio.
I'm really happy with the repair / rebuild.
I'll post a few photos of the fuselage after the glue on the top glass is dry.

Here is the glass with the clamps removed.
I have a cover for the main spar, painted red, that will be installed in a few.

SPD Where's the glass? I don't see anything, ha ha. Is it getting close to time for the N28? I started on mine last week and have been waiting to see more progress on yours as your thread has been very helpful on my build.

Hopefully next weekend the Nieuport 28 build will continue. Ihave some minor work on its fusealge to complete then onto the tail feathers. It will be nice to be back building instead of rebuilding.

Was hanging out with the parents today so not too much got done. I did get the servos back in the wings and the linkage put back on.
I just need a receiver and the plane is complete.
I may order an 8 channel HV receiver so I can start flying the plane again. It seems the radio I was hoping to have by now, which would have included a receiver,is a little delayed.

SDP, COOL! I love it! You know, a Cub pilot out at our local airport is going to give me a ride in the one he restored. Can't wait! AND, he suggested doing the same thing. I declined... when he asked me the first time. Now that I know it can be done... I just may have to reconsider!
