What should I build this winter?
My flying level:
I just completed the Ultra Sport 60 and flying it now, its flying like its on rails, landings are beautiful, doing slow rolls with rudder, trying to do knife edges without any mixes ā its not easy, Iām feeling there is more for me to learn on this airplane.
My limitations:
ā¢ About 60 size airplane
ā¢ Motor no bigger than OS 91 FX this is what I have and the 4*60 kind of getting boring, I really donāt want to spend $400 on a new engine now.
ā¢ NO gas ā I live in an apartment, the airplane will stink of gas.
ā¢ Cannot be too complicated the project needs to be finished and not set aside for better times.
I was thinking about:
ā¢ GP extra 60 with that OS 91 FX but it seems people like to put there 4 strokes 120.
ā¢ Ultra sport 60 with retracts, fiberglassed, OS 91 FX with 13x10 prop
ā¢ Maybe a UAV from my Tower 40 trainer
ā¢ Top flite P-47 60 size, warbirds in general suitable for flying in circles which I like but it seems like a lot of work for a 60 size airplane ā retracts, fiberglassed everything, paint etcā and now it comes in an ARF form.
ā¢ I have 2X OS 46 AX is there some twin engine airplane I can build?
* Goldberg super Chipmunk - this option added later buy MinnFlyer
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Alex

RE: What should I build this winter?
How about a sig cub 1/5 scale. One of those 46 would work great, and you could build the clipped wing version to make it more aerobatic.
I built the full wing version, and love the way it flies.

Oh yes Mike this is the best airplane i've built and flew so far, I'm not struggling with the airplane to keep it in straight line any more, There is so much to learn on the US60.
I'll tell you more, everybody at the field recognizing the Ultra Sport and saying its a great flier, i guess 95% of them doing the arf thing...
My smile growing even wider and that is why i'll probably end up with building another one US 60 similar to your build this time.
Thanks
Alex

I live in the city and fly in floyd bennett, best field I couldnt even dream of - 200 ft wide 800 ft long concrete runway.
Federal ground with one access road so real estate sharks cannot confiscate it.
Mike are you gonna be in the city any time soon, we can go fly the US60.

These are GREAT Kits. NO Die cut parts, all machine cut and sanded. If you've built the US60 you will have no problem with a Bridi kit. Super Guy to deal with. I asked for an extra set of plans and he told me to just send a check for them when I got a chance.
I'm building a Killer Chaos right now and used a GP wing jig for the first time. The panels came out real nice.

What dos it mean machine cut like with a bridge port is it better than die cut?
sanded?
your build is clean, interesting set up for the ailerons servos.

Yes, all the parts are machine cut. Not a Bridge Port mill...A CNC router. None of them a smashed with a cutting die.
The Aileron hatches are sold by Hobby Lobby. http://www.hobby-lobby.com/surface_m..._2159_prd1.htm
I've used them a couple times and they work real well. Hobby Lobby gets all the weird EURO hardware...Smiles
Bridi kits don't come with alot of hardware, they never did. You have to buy your own wheels, pushrods, horns, etc.
I bought Tettra wheels from Central Hobbies for this one.
Bridi kits are kind of special. You want to take your time with them so you'll end up with a Killer Model you'll want to hang in the living room when you're not flying it.
I used regular Elmers White glue. Everybody's got thier favorites. I like Elmers. It dries clear and its somewhat flexable. I've been using it for years and have never had a joint come loose. At $14 a gallon it goes a long way. You can thin it with water if you need to and pre-glue your parts. It doesn't "Kick" so you have some time. Elmers dries the slowest of all the glues I've tried. It soaks in.
Anything worth while takes time...
Hobby Lobby makes the BEST Pins I've ever used. Very thin, hardly leaves a mark when you pull them out. "T" pins are giant.

RE: What should I build this winter?
I need to give it some thinking.
I rarely install the supplied hardware, i have a special bin for it, rarely take something out of there.
What about weight? there is a guy at our field that build these bridi kits but some how they turn out to be 12-14 lb for a 60 size airplane and than they need 120-160 motor, i'm sure he over engineer them, well thats his hobby.

He didn't sand it...
I agree with you. I'd rather not pay for the hardware that comes in most kits and ARF's. There's no way I'm using a plastic clevis on something I worked my @$$ off on building.
You have to "build" a Bridi kit but they're not difficult.
The center servo is for flaps. I fly in a tree lined "Bowl" with a water hazzard on one end of the runway. Brakes are good.......

RE: What should I build this winter?
You know I'm finally at this stage that i can build and fly these really beautiful not trainer like airplanes, but the selection between them is so small.
I need to roll this next project in my head for few weeks, and since there is no airplane in building process on my bench right now I'll get board pretty soon.
Thanks

The bridi is a great plane, but it's too much like the Ultra Sport. No need for two similar planes.
