Bashing of the Kadet Seniors
Started a poll this weekon bashing a trainer kit, Eagle II ,Lt40 or a Kadet Sr. . The Lt 40 and the Sr tied , with 14 votes apiece . Decided on the Sr. and called Sig only to find out they are on back order for several weeks. But I just happened to pick up the last one at one of the Twin cities LHS. today .
Mr67Stang is also going to bash oneand we are going to do a build together. And anyone else that wants to join in, the more the better ..
This will be my 13th kit but first true bash and will be looking for ideas from the RCU gang. Which brings me to my first question . Engine , I was going to use a Magnum .52 fs that I had on my Lt40. but floats really pulled it down . I have a Saito .72 I,m thinking of using but it weighs lighter than most .46 . and was told the Sr comes out tail heavy, even more so with the flaps and aileron servo,s added. So I,m leaning towards a Magnum/ASP .91 fs , think this will be to much over kill ?

Congratulations the Kadet Senior is likely the most kit bashed airplane ever and in a hugh variety.
Suggest you go with the 91 sized four stroke if you stay with one engine and if you are working from the kit as opposed to the Arf (the Arf comes with them and the kit does not) then do consider adding . If adding ailerons do reduce dihedral to about have that shown on the plane.
Here is my kit bashed Senior going on six years old now and something over two hundred flights:

I guess your're ready to dive right in on this project. I had better get my work bench clear so I don't glue beer cans and cigarette buts to my Kadet

RE: Bashing of the Kadet Seniors
To be honest , I pulled the plans out and this may take me awhile . Been looking them over, doing some research on bolt on wing, flaps etc. Trying to figure out what engine to use , leaning towards this one. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXXRH4&P=0. I am fond of the Magnum fs.
Here,s the mods I,m thinking about
1. Flaps Barndoor
2. alierons
3 2 in dehidral
4 Bolt on wing
5 Taildragger
6 Bomb drop
7 Camera
8. Lite,s landing and night flying
9. Mod the tail feathers {full length rudder move stab back.
Whew sounds like a lot for my first bash . I have a DX7 so I may run out of channels before I run out of mods .lol
Mr67Stang , yup , clean off the bench and recycle the empty,s .I just started covering a 4 Star .40that is midly modded, so I wont be glueing on the Sr.till Tuesday or Wensday ,but I have alot of plannning to do before I can start . I see another trip to the LHS formore balsa already .

Thanks, if you have not flown at night before then your Kadet is the ideal vehicle and are the perfect night flyers. If you go that route suggest you use two systems the first is strings of leds internally and then coving if not all the aft portions of the fuselage and the wing in clear color monocoat and using the leds of the same color.
I also use three 1157 tailight bulbs mounted on a tail stinger and the wingtips the tail is left white and the wingtip units are wrapped in red and blue monocoat. these are powered by a seven cell rc car battery the 3000 nimh give about a half hour of the brightest nav lights around.
The Quad Kaydet has flourescent Glow wire for internal lighting but that was a failure and its almost impossible to see at any distance so that on I fly on the orientation lights.
The Six Pack which has not made its first night flight yet has the internal Leds which are much better.
You are going to love the night flight very enjoyable and one of may favorite things to do.

Are you powering both elements in the 1157 ? That has got to be really brite , is that at 8.4 volts ? I probably go with a lipo 11.1vfor my lites and other add on,s and use a regulator to get my voltages.
I would think starting 6 engines would be a major under taking , not to mention getting them to all run at the same rpm,s . How close are you to done with it ? More pic,s please .
John , did you go with a bolt on wing , if so how did you attach the leading edge ?
My biggest road block right now is theengine I,m going to use . Got to be a 4 stroke . I do have a Saito GK 1.00 that I just put new bearings in. Guess I could run a 3 blade prop to get ground clearance ,just seems like the 1.00 would be overkill . Layed it over the plans and would have to modify the cowl to get it to work.

RE: Bashing of the Kadet Seniors
I started my build (bash) of the Kadet Senior yesterday. I decided to go with airlerons and flaps fashioned from the kit's trailing edge. Other posts suggested that the barn door style might present control problems for the beginning pilot ( & I am one of them).
I still need to get some stock for the TE hinge spar, but should be able to tap one of the local club members for what I need. Here are three pictures of what I have done so far.
I am not decided on what power plant to use yet. Other postings suggest that the .46 two stroke is really too small. I have looked at The Saito line .72, .80, .91, or perhaps a .61 2 stroke. Brand name may not be all that important. I am keeping in mind that I am using the plane for a trainer, but want to have some adventure with it later on.
I have uploaded 3 pictures, but haven't learned how to attach them in this post. The edit function did not seem to work for this.

RE: Bashing of the Kadet Seniors
Thanks for the welcome! I am going to place a spar on the TE of the ribs, and then use the tapered edge piece from the kit hinged to the spar as the airloin. I may add flaps as well, but that means another servo.

All my current and privious (eight i think) night flyers for my orientation lights (on a boat of full scale airplane they would be called navigation lights) I have used the 1157's with both filiments running each lamp wired in paralell across each filiment. I power them with a seven cell rc car battery (8.4 volts) and have used in differnet years 1600 mah to 5000 mah Nimh.
These have always provided the brightest lights at every organized nite fly I have attended. I preferr to mount the battery above the wing on the CG with bands and this makes change out in the dark much easier. I do not use a switch on the systems as this is just another failure point. Instead just plug the battery in atop the wing before startup.
Unlike the Quad Kaydet the Six Pack only has seven flights on it now and none at night with the new internal leds along with the 1157 incandescents. The biggest challenge for me with that airplane is acquiring crew that I can train. It takes at least three besides me. I am in a wheelchair so only just fly and direct starting operations.
The Quad Kaydet is much easier needing only two others besides me and it has flown many venues and shows including night shows. The only one I have not done with that one is night off the water since the London Bridge float fly abandoned the night flyers some years back.
Will add some pics of light details of the Quad in a short while to keep from timing out.
In the meantime here is the first flight of the Six Pack not a gread vidio but beggers can be choosers. It shows a bit of the starting routine.

Laid a few engines over the plans . A ST .75 , Saito 1.00 and a .56 . My .72 is mounted in a Twist right now , but the foot print is close to the .56 . The plane well probably weigh 8 to 9 lb,s with the mods so a Saito .72 would probaly fly it well , but a .91 would have the reserve to pull thru loops and and floats wont be a problem..

RE: Bashing of the Kadet Seniors
This is going to be a great thread. Today my stock Kadet Senior was involved in a low level, 5 feet or less incident. My buddy who also was flying his Senior, and I, was having a low altitude, low speed oval track race. He overtook me on the inside of a turn and his prop chewed thru my left wing tip. My plane shuddered but seemed fine. Man was this a fun day. We flew a total of about 15 flights each. The goal was not to bust altitude and be the last to finnish the 10 circuits.

Another fun trip are wingless races.
Two cones lined up in the middle of the runway around a hundred feet appart. Line up two to four racers line abreast with callers holding the airplanes. At the flag they are off an the first to complete 10 laps or possibly five wins - No wings Allowed-

Cloud Cruiser , thats not to bad for a prop strike , must be a tough old bird . What size is your Saito on yours ?
John , do you win many wingless race,s with the Sr ? lol.
Tower sent me a nice coupon this morning in a e-mail . Going to order a Magnum .91 fs for it. My Saito 1.00,s are power house,s for their size and I feel it would be over kill to put one on the Sr. My next build is a GP Extra 300s and thats what the 1.00 going in.
Looks like a flying day today , so wont get much done as far as building goes. I did get the wing covered on the 4 Star and really need to finish it before I get to far on the Sr. I hate covering the most and have never painted a plane yet . I do a little painting and airbrushing , maybe a flamed Sr. Here,s a few pic,s of the last flame job I did.

Hi, I am using a Saito .56 and it is just perfect for the way I fly. My friend has a saito .72 on his. He has a bomb drop trap door and he also has a rocket launch system on the wings. His has ailerons with a much flatter wing and is set up as a taildragger. Mine is bone stock but if I ever "rekit it" I'll make some mods to it. Goodluck with the build.

The Magnum .91 is on it,s way . Did,nt get to fly yesterday, just a crappy low cloud day. Ended up going to Menards and picking up another door blank for $5 bucks. The old one was getting a little beat up .
Going to build both wings at the same time, cut them outand theyjust fit a 80x30 door slab .The plans have shrunk about a 1/4 in. at thehe tips. The ribs are die-cut and I needed to go over most of the W-3 ribs wirh a razor blade, took some time but wellworth the effort in the long run.
Right wing trailing edge is good but left one has a pretty good curve in it . I was going to use the TE for theflaps and ali. so it well be cut up in 3 peice,s .I,ll try to straighten it but there is some harder wood on one end .

RE: Bashing of the Kadet Seniors
Sounds like a good plan. I glued up the fin and rudder assemblies this morning. I extended the rudder by 3/4 ", so will need to remember to move the stab back 3/4" when it's time to install it.
Are you going to move your servos closer to the surfaces they control, or are you going to follow the plans? Since I'm bashing, lights might be fun, too! No one here does the night fly thing yet. I might get to be first.[8D]
I don't know how brave to get, since this is my first bash of a kit.

I,m going to run a servo for each aileron , not sure on flaps yet . I,m sheeting the top and bottom of the center of the wing andglass it.. The plans call for using a balsa spar doubler on the bottom and a spruce doubler on the top. I use spruce for both doublers .Flaps are going to be 4 bays with a 3 1/2 in cord and the ailerons are 7 bays with a 3 1/2 in cord . Have a few idea,s about bolt on wing mod but nothing cast in stone yet.
Most of todays work was laying things out and trying to look ahead . Taking notes and making a list of steps I need to do . Like cutting holes in the ribs for the aileron servo leads , etc.
Here,s a link I found for flaps. and ailerons .

If anyone has any barndoor aliron/flaps mods ,please post them. Going to make a balsa run in the morning so I can get some work done. Well post more pics so.

RE: Bashing of the Kadet Seniors
Hi,
I wish i had this thread when i started the building of my senior!
For what it is worth (the thing has not flown yet - still in the finishing stages) here is how i did my bolt on wing:
1. A piece of hardwood, that is flat on the top, and angled at the bottom so the bottom is parrallel to the top surface angle of the trailing edge of the wing (like a piece of trailing edge stock upside down, but made of hardwood). It effectively makes the training edge a parallelogram so the top and bottom are in the same plane.
2. The piece is cut in half in the middle and the 2 pieces are then joined in the middle to as to match the dihedral of the wing
3. The wing bolts on into blind nuts in the hardwood held in with epoxy
4. There are ply doublers at the edges to strengthen the whole thing, and a ply doubler at the back to strengthen it across the join of the two hardwood blocks (ply shaped as per the dihedral).
You can see in the pics how the bolts are angled backward (so the shaft of the bolt is perpendicular to the top of the Trailing edge piece), and also angled slightly inwards to account for the dihedral.
I can make up a drawing if this doesn't make sense!
Pics attached.
