Simple stripes on the bottom but just by adding a little white stripe down the blue it will show up a lot better in all light conditions. Then just to dress it up a little I run some 1/8 inch black stripes. Without the black it just kinda looks blah and undressed.
It was date day so I didn't have a lot of time for the plane so this is all I did.

Nothing much done today, people in and out but that was nice. All I did was put some stripes on the fuse to break it up then added a little logo for fun. The canopy will go just in front so it will give the plane a sleek look. I also started putting it back together. Mounted the engine and put in the control rods then got the wild idea to put on the control horns on the rudder and elevator.
How about a gripe, a long standing gripe. Whatever idiots put together the little bags of parts in the control horns should be taken out and shot. A Philips head screw doesn't cost anymore then a slotted screw yet they keep giving us these useless slotted head screws. I have a box of #2 screws but still, why do they keep doing it?
I decided to use the screws they gave me, I don't have a clue why but it seemed like the thing to do. What a pain in the hinderpoo!!

Gene,
It's coming along nicely. Have you got some graphic ideas brewing to plant on the wing tops?
Sure am looking forward to hearing how well that thing flies with the old FOX...

Right now it's just a name on the wing. I keep looking at it and liking all that yellow and red. Go figure. I will need that canopy, Scott can't find the one he has. I was thinking of the paint splatter, then a lot of stripes, then a big lion roaring with ROAR flowing out of it's mouth. The wing is just such a smooth wet looking yellow though and I hate to cover it all up.

Well Scott, did you notice I found the one I was looking for and where I found it. I keep all my cowls and canopy's in the closet on the top shelf. I found one canopy for my favorite Sukhoi plane and one for a Bridi Dirty Birdy. I tried to use the one from the Birdy but it's almost a full length canopy but it is yellow. You know what that means, I will have another yellow Birdy so I can use that cowl.
I must have moved that rabbit three times looking for the cowl I lost before I finally noticed it.

Merry Christmas to all the Uproar/Dazzler fans out there...

Gene, Scott,
Never fear, a new - never unwrapped canopy will be on it's way soon.
I used this mornings coffee buzz to make this box.
Address label is even on he other side. Didn't want the world to know what's on the label though....

Finished up with the “new” ailerons for the purple uproar.

Much to my surprise my new design was not any lighter than the original ailerons I had on it. Once all the sanding was done the new ailerons in bare wood were two grams heavier than the originals.

Now since I don’t have any appreciable amount of monokote left in those original colors --- I get to add one more color to this thing....In this case it is Hobby Kings “Brushed Aluminum”. Don’t remember what they call it but that is what it looks like. As it turns out the HK covering is a tad lighter as the finished ailerons ended up two grams lighter. Had I added some trim colors that would have added another couple of grams though.....

We’ll have to see how it flies. From all that I have read, the airfoil shaped ailerons should prove to be more effective/efficient...Whatever that really means. But the traditional shape should change how the feel/act as well.

Without a doubt the plane losses its distinct bat mobile look with traditional ailerons.

How did the silver go down. So far the only HK color I have used is yellow. The silver from Mono and Ultra were often a hit or miss thing. When I place an order to HK I plan on getting some of there covering in different colors to keep on hand.

This silver was easy to work with. Of coarse, ailerons like these aren’t typically something to give you a hard time in the covering department. No problems with the ooze you mentioned with your yellow.

When I first started trying out the Hobby King covering, I had to learn to use lower temperatures compared to what I use on Monokote. Once I learned that – I have been all right...

The silver that I have is the “WG044-00406/6738 Covering Film Bright Silver (5mtr) 406”
This stuff is pretty cool in that it has a grain to the color. Much like brushed aluminum or stainless. The bummer with that is --- you have to keep the material orientated.

Here is a picture of just the material so that maybe you can see the grain.

That's cool though, I like the look. I have to see if they have a copper or bronze, I like that color but have never done anything with it myself. I have given gold leaf a try and that is also nice looking but it needs an over coat to keep it from being rubbed off.

Trick time, it's so fun to show and tell. Rick sent me an original Roar canopy and these are still made from the good plastic, why good you ask? Because it is great at taking a tint!! What I do is trim the canopy along that line you can almost see if you hold it in the light just right. Save the cut off piece! Then I flat sand the canopy and make sure it fits the fuse nice and flat so it glues all the way around.
Now here comes the trick, make sure your wife is out of the house!!! OK, my wife doesn't care but a lot of yours may see anything model related to being an out in the shop activity.
I brought in my big pot and got some water almost to boil then added a pack of Ritt Dye, Navy Blue in my case. Mixed it well in the water then took a small piece of the cut off canopy and tested to make sure it would take the dye, not too many of the new kits use this old type of plastic and the new stuff won't dye very well without making up a witches brew.
My test strip got to the color I wanted in about a minute. I let the dye cool for about 10 minutes then floated the nice clear canopy in the dye and stirred with a wooden stick. Go ahead and use one of your wife's wooden spoons and see what happens!!! I keep pulling the canopy out to check the color then when it gets there I rinse it under the sink they dry it off, all finished.
Trick time!!! Have a fist full of APC props that are balanced and drop them into the dye, SHAZAM, custom colored props. I don't have any of the correct size on hand, not to worry. I will put the dye into a jug and save it for when I do then make up some custom matching props.
This trick works on any of the dark colors but trust me, it doesn't work on light colors. I have tried to make up some yellow APC props and it isn't pretty.
Thanks to Rick all I need is a little more trim work and the Roar will be finished. I just think I will add some 1/8 stripes on the wing to break up all that yellow.

Rick asked me to post photos of how I glued this canopy on the plane but in truth I didn't do anything special this time. I usually mark the outside of the canopy with a pen then glue up a small frame inside of the line, about 1/16 to 1/8 high then glue to that so it's bonded to the frame. In this case I just used the Pacer 560 canopy glue and glued the canopy directly to the fuse after I sanded and fitted the canopy so it fit flat. Nothing special at all. Just added glue to the canopy then taped it down so it didn't move over night during the cure. I will also drill a couple very small holes in the back of the canopy to allow the hot air to escape so the canopy doesn't heat warp. Not that it gets hot in Vegas during the summer but just in case.

Default 2015 Uproar – new years review

I thought I would do something a little unique for this thread for a New Year - Review. Once back in the early days of the thread I did a post of all the planes that had been pictured at that time. Back then there was maybe 12 or 14 different planes pictured.

As of this day (unless I missed some) there have been pictures of 29 different uproars/dazzlers posted on this thread. Here is the best of what I have. All but two of these pictures came strait off this thread. And those two planes have pictures on this thread. But DGrants-American Flag plane was so nice looking that I had to hunt down a finished picture from a different thread. Then the particular shot of Greybeards newest uproar has not been posted on the thread. At least not yet.

There was even a "Twin" under construction that was posted

Here are a few in the air shots that I have

Looking down the nose of my “Blue” Uproar at the “Purple” uproar

Looking out the wing of the “Purple” uproar to see the “Blue” Uproar

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Rick, That's a nice spread of photos you did. Just for grins I started to read the thread from page one, my goodness we are a bunch of chatty people! In post #20 the idea of not adding the cap strips paid off. I put them on one side then after the wing was mounted I added the rest?? I think? This was the longest Roar build I ever did and I can't recall a lot of things but I do recall leaving off the strips at some point.
I have to laugh at one photo you posted with all those ailerons stacked up, you really had a lot of lumber in your build.
When I read about the need for weight in the tail I was a bit surprised, mine is just a tad tail heavy but it will CG OK with the little Fox .40 by gear placement.
41 pages but then I looked at the start date, 09 was a while ago.
I picked up several ideas from the thread and incorporated them in my build. I did select a lot of light wood and the plane came out very light compared to the stock kit built to plans. After seeing your Roars fly I really wanted a light one and decided the little Fox .40 would be perfect for how I want to fly this one, more putting around then high speed rolls and such.
After looking at Cliffs splatter covering job it's making me think of getting out the iron and covering again but I just cleaned up my mess a little and pulled down my Bipe and started working on it again. I gave up on my little gas engine and am going to install another YS 1.20. I had all the old holes in the fire wall plugged up with dowels and just used a flush cut saw to remove the stick outs. A little sanding and I will be able to mount the YS.
This old thread was/is a lot of fun and can't thank you enough for the added work you did on it.
My one big question is on that twin fuse Roar, I would like to see the finished plane and get a flight report here in the Roar thread. That got my mind to working too?? That would be a fun build!! Just a thought, we will see how the summer goes and I want to build another Dirty Birdy now that I have found my plans and templates. I even have my Spring Airs working again and they need a home!!

Wow... Very nice post and pics up there Rick!!... and... Happy New Year!! I just jumped over the catch up on this thread, and very glad I did. We were just mentioning/referring to this the other day... matter of fact, I posted a link to it in el xeros' recent thread... Hes got a very cool Dazzler..

So... thanks for adding my pic up there.. Glad you'all like it... There's so many "MAD" schemes up there... Its so cool to be included in these fine planes. Its about the sharing of ideas and info that makes it happen. Thanks.

I've followed and enjoyed this thread for probably over 4yrs... long time anyway.. and I gleaned much info from all you guys.. So ... thanks for sharing.. and thanks Rick for keeping it going!.

Have a great weekend.

Maiden day for three planes, the Boeing bipe didn't have enough power so I shut down the engine and sort of landed it, a splat landing is a landing isn't it. Knocked the LG off but it's designed to do that. The Swoose runs great but after it idles for a while it poops out and quits running. I'm wondering if that dumbass married to my wife has the fuel lines hooked up backasswards? Can't be, if I fill into the pressure line fuel comes right out of the main line? I'll figure it out soon!!
The UP-ROAR you ask, well, it flys just like an Up-Roar on steroids. Yes I have a bit of throw on all the controls. The biggest surprise was how this little old Fox 40 pulls the plane. The plane is at 3.5 pounds so it's light but still, it's a hot rod. Also the first time I have ever had an engine run better in the air then on the ground.
I'm going to need to play with a lot of props to find something I really like.
On maiden it took off so smooth, only took a couple of beeps of trim. Usually I don't stunt a new plane a lot but it's a Roar, what could I do besides crash it to hurt it. Knife edge is OK, just the normal Roar knife edge, does a great KE turn. Tracks well even in big loops both inside and outside loops. Snap rolls, well, I mentioned the throws so it happens right now. In just an aileron roll it looks like a spinning drill bit. Flat spin, I'm sure the plane is fine but the pilot is out of practice.
The landing is a one bouncer most the time but I did manage to land it on all three tires without a bounce several times.
I get about 8 minute flights with the 6 ounce tank, the engine burbles to tell me when to land.
It was closer to 80 then 70 today without any wind at all until about 11 then we finally got a nice breeze so at idle the plane will slow to a walk and glides really nice.
I'm happy with it, I got in 10 flights.
Complaints: well, it's too short to fit well in my shops plane rack and the fixed wing gets in the way but flying it reminds me of my early days and it has brought back the fun!!

Gene,
Good to hear of the maiden for the uproar. Sounds like it has at least met your expectations.

Probably more then met them. It may be me but I thought it was lacking rudder authority?? I was doing flat turns and it did feel lacking? Then I tried a tail wag and it really shook it's butt? I was comparing it to my old Kaos though, that isn't fair to the little plane though. Just way too much fun!!

Here's one you missed! Dazzler that my daughters and I built.

Nice Jerry.
Do I detect a little "BAT Dazzler" motiff?
I noticed 2009 on one of the pictures. Is it still flying?

Well, lol, it was supposed to be a dragon, but did end up looking more like a bat. My daughters designed and cut out the graphics so what ever they wanted was going on the thing. It actually is still in great shape, but after a couple years of flying and fixing a few mishaps, the girls suggested I make a static display out of it while it still looked good. They're kind of sentimental about it now since it was a project that all of us worked on together. So as of last year it now hangs from my ceiling with a blown up Royal .25 on it just for looks. I've still got the plans and they want to build another one some day, but right now we're in the middle of two other kits so I don't know when we'll get to it.

That's fantastic Jerry, two kids still having fun with Dad and I agree with them, it's time to hang it up and have it as a keep sake. Rick gave me a set of plans for the Roar and it had all the needed templates on the plans and the kit is an easy one to cut, I assume the plans for the dazzler are the same, I still had brown hair the last time I built one. Last Roar I built was in about 2000 or so and I still have a set of building instructions for it. They were a bit of help in a few places too so don't toss those either.
There have been a lot of different planes built over the years but Rick and Cliff showed me what I was missing by not having a little fun fly plane on hand so sooner or later you will come back to the fold. I had forgot how much fun flying could be until I got another Roar.
