Cool 2016 Year End Review

It’s been two years since I posted the last “Year in review” post. Since there have been a few more pictures of Uproars and Dazzlers added to the thread since then I figure it’s time for an update.

Some of the new pictures include a Scratch built 1.20 size. Plus some pictures I ran across here on RCU in the “Good Covering Jobs” thread.

I’ve re-arranged the pictures some adding in the new and created a couple more categories to sort them out.

25 different Tower Hobbies Uproar 40/Great Planes Dazzler

And for another 5 uproars that are/were powered by WATTS

Would love to see finished pictures of this twin. Can't leave it out...

Here is a few of Uproar 60's

And for the Monsters.
The 1st one is from towers site.
The 2nd is a scratch built 1.20 size posted in this thread

Here is a few group shots

Well, I maxed out how many pictures I can put in one post.
I'll ad a few more shots in another post

Rick, you are the Uproar Master. Looks like you really like the Red one. With temps in the high 20's here and stiff winds, I'm going to have to wait for better weather.

Red face The rest of the IN THE AIR shots

Can't leave out the old on board camera shots....
Poor quality but still cool from one plane to the other before all the modern technology was more affordable.

And for my favorite in flight shots

I have my kit from the sale last Christmas. Great price. I'm going to start on it late Spring-early Summer.

Hi all. I have no finished pictures of my Two-Up-Roar. It is no longer with us. It expired back in 2012. Pilot error.

I just bought two Uproar/engine combo's from Tower to build another one. The last one was a blast to fly.

I am going to make some mods to this one, ailerons, elevators, fin & rudders. Also going to do a center flap.
With the AX .46's I will probably do tail mounted servos for balance. Tettra 7oz bubbless tanks.

I will post the build when I start.

Happy year to all, Tony

One of the things I noticed while looking at crash photos of Uproars is how the fuselage breaks. So when I was building mine, the top and bottom sheeting I doubled the sheeting. I inset (top and bottom) grain lengthwise 3/32 balsa into the fuselage and cross covered that just like the plans state to give the fuselage more strength and rigidity. The plane needs tail weight anyway so I didn't feel it would hurt. Mine needed a little tail weight when I was done and I had built in a hatch in the far end of the tail, so it was easy to get it to balance. Just something I did, thought I would put it out there for what its worth. I should add that my engine is a Magnum .46, to give others an idea what I had to balance. She's definitely NOT under-powered and exhibits spirited flying.

Tom, good information to know. Thanks for posting. I made a Vanessa Rig, CG Finder. I'm experimenting using it as part of the build process rather than after the build. So far it is helping me along with my current build. I'll see how this build turns out.

Happy New Year Tony,
I sure hate to hear/read that the "Two-Up-Roar" is no longer flyable!
What, no finished pictures? That is/was a maiden check list foul.....

Good luck on the new version.
I think I center flap would be a blast to play with on that thing.
Oh...take pictures....We want to see it.

ET, I've still not built one of those "Vanessa Rig(s)" for finding the balance point. A good tool for experimenting and documenting. I am still amazed at how far back I moved the balance point on my Uproars.

Tom, another way to stiffen up the rear fuse is with triangle stock in the corners. That is what I did on my builds.
Page 8 post 187 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/kit-...ml#post9416464 has some pictures.
The added benefit with the triangle stock in the corners is that you can round off the corners of the fuselage for a little more slick look.

I went back and studied that. It's amazing how much engineering is involved in such a simple looking model. Now I understand why it took me 9 months from start to finish. Although there were some health issues I had to help the significant other with. But really, when I started it, I thought it would fall together. I found out there were many decisions to be made. But I have the tendency to over analyze things, so that slows me down. I try to remind myself of the KISS principle.

Rick, you are the "UPROAR MASTER". Thanks for helping the UPROAR building community.

Tom,
I know - I missed the boat for "KISS"
But I had a blast doing what I did with the three planes.
Hopefully others enjoy or are at least amused with my build.
There is a lot of stuff (building tips) sprinkled throughout this thread much of it from many other people (including you) as well.

Oh, you mentioned the temps you have the other day. With that usually comes snow or ice.
Well a few weeks back, Hobby King had 40/60 size skies on sale for a buck a piece. So I bought 6 for my three uproars.
We don't see much snow or ice around here. But, by golly, if I do, I am taking one of those planes to fly with skies.

Here is a shot of my progress on Two-Up-Roar V2.

I lost the last one to aileron flutter, so this one gets beefed up flying surfaces.
Ailerons, rudders and elevators are larger. The elevator gets two servos. I am going to use all metal geared servos on the ailerons for extra peace of mind.
The flutter took out one of the plastic geared servos on V1.

Starting the fuselages tonight.

Interesting project Tony!
Going with two .25 or two .40's when done?

Tony,
How’s the progress coming along?
What is the wingspan going to be on the “Two-Up-Roar V2”?
I’d expect, no matter the span, with two 46’s that thing will get on down the road!

When I built my three uproars, flutter was a huge concern. Fortunately I have not had any problems with flutter. With that said, I have never (well maybe once or twice) propped mine for speed.

I did loose an aileron servo early on due to stripped gears. Thankfully when it stripped, the aileron went neutral and I landed with no problems. I went with the smaller servos in my quest for lightness and for the sake of experimentation. I also moved the aileron servos out toward wingtip and back toward the trailing edge. Out to keep servo and linkage in middle of aileron (mass) and back to keep linkages a little shorter (and to help with moving weight). http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/kit-...ml#post9343018

The first batch of servos that I tried in my experiments were plastic geared. I wrote quite a bit about the servos and experiments earlier on in this thread. Later on I lost an elevator servo (Hextronic D-MG-16) due to circuit board failure - it just quit working. Thankfully I have two elevator servos and when the one failed, it failed at neutral.

I have had good luck with the Turnigy 380MG servos that I installed later. I have these on ailerons and elevators.

Rick,

The wingspan is 60 1/2". V2 has the fuselage center lines at 12 1/2". I am going to run Xoar 12/4 props so i needed a little extra room.

I am adding 3/8" triangle stock to the fuse to round it off some. Should look nicer than a box.

The wing is about ready for fuse install. My flutter destruction was during a curious moment to see how fast it might go. Part of it might have been
due to the not so tight gear train on the standard Airtronics servos I used. I am going with a center flap because it might be a blast to play around with.

For the landing gear, I am using a Dubro large plastic gear that I cut in half. Mounting one half on each fuse with a modified mount to keep the wheels in the same location.
If I use the stock mount, the wheels will be too far forward and might cause bouncing on landings.

Tried to upload pictures, but it won't work. I will try again later.

So my square Quickie mounts hit the cylinder fins and won't bolt up. I have one round one that will work with a small relief cut.
So I chucked one of the square ones up in the lathe and now I have two round ones. This, along with rear mounted servos, should
help with the CG.

Stay tuned.

Ailerons, rudders and elevators are larger. The elevator gets two servos. I am going to use all metal geared servos on the ailerons for extra peace of mind.
The flutter took out one of the plastic geared servos on V1.

Starting the fuselages tonight.

Hopefully you have done a little research into what can cause flutter, but just in case no one else has talked with you about it, I should mention that making the control surfaces larger is not necessarily going to solve problems with flutter. With all other things equal, a larger surface could even make it worse.

Yeah I saw that. I sent a photo of mine and it didn't make the cut. But I think I've been "black balled" because of how vocal (emails to everybody) I've been about the dues increase. Don't get me started.

They look good though, good to see them.

Hey Tom,
I can't remember if I sent pictures to Model Aviation of my uproars or not. Sure thought I did...

You're not "black balled" here. Feel free to add another picture of your Uproar anytime you like.
Inverted just above the run way would be nice...

My Uproars have not been to the flying field since new years day.. Not that I have left them at home. I have not been flying since then.)

I hear you on the AMA and the dues. Not to mention their spending. Hence the need for more dues.
I have sent a few emails myself, and talked to my district VP.
