Default RE: Good way to balance????

Capt'n,

I posted the first photo above of my Extra, but the Vaness Balancer is not my idea.  That said, I sure like if for balancing large planes because it gives me the ability to make adjustments, like moving the batteries around, and I immediately know the effect it will have on the CG.

Just remember one thing, you have to have a small level to set on the front deck just forward of the canopy.  When the level shows that the plane is hanging level, the plum bob will point to the CG.

What I do is mark the CG on the top of the fuselage ( usually it's very close to the leading edge of the wing tube for good stable flight, more to the back edge for 3D) and then start moving weight around inside the plane until the plum bob points to the mark I made.  Remember, after you move whatever you are going to move, you will have to re-level the plane.

One other thing-the drawing that shows how to make the Vanessa says to use either 1x2 or 2x2 wood.   Use the 2x2 and at least a 3/4" dowel.  Otherwise you will have a lot of trouble turning the dowel to adjust the plane to level.

Good Luck.     Rich
