I just subscribed. I have an Asto Hog waiting in the rafters. I hope to start it after Christmas. (can I use the word Christmas?) I will be building it as a tail dragger but have not decided on the gear yet. I believe I will cut the dihedral down but not eliminate it. I look forward to following your build!

Cheers

I have a astro hog that I have the wing built but feel like I had to much dihedral in it . What do I need to do to take it out. I cut the wing back in half so what should I do to put it back together. There is a good size gap now.

DGUY:

I recently had to cut a wing in half to remove way too much dihedral that the original builder had put in. I shaped a balsa wedge that filled the gap between the two center ribs and epoxied it in place. I also cut two new spar doublers out of 1/8" light ply and epoxied those in place. It took a little trial and error to get the wedge just the right dimensions, but it worked good. I also used carbon fiber veil over the wing center sheeting. I used finishing resin to stick that in place. It is still in one piece and flying.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Bill,
I kind of guessed that would be the right road to go down. Could I use a light fiberglass mesh to go down the center of the wing?
Thanks Derrick

Yes, the fiberglass around the wing center will work just fine. When I put the finishing resin on, I spread it on the area where the carbon (or fiberglass) will go. I then lay the carbon in place and use an old credit card or something similar to squeege the carbon down into the resin. If needed, I put a little resin on top of the carbon and squeege it again. The idea is to soak the carbon, but remove as much of the resin as possible. It doesn't take much at all to stick the carbon or fiberglass to the wood. This helps keep from adding unnecessary weight.

I have also used 30 min. epoxy to do the same job. I like to thin the epoxy with a few drops of rubbing alcohol to make it easier to soak the carbon and squeege off the excess. Otherwise, the procedure is the same.

Both winpanels built now. Next a little sanding and joining the panels. Also, now leaning toward a Magnum 4 stroke 90. Just ordered one from Hobby People for $139.99 + shipping.

Another minor comment; while I agree sanding the leading edge of the wing as illustrated on the plan, I thought it worth mentioning that I made a simple jig to ensure the proper foil is maintained thoughout the length of the wing. Made the jig in 5 minutes or less, and I think it's worth the effort

Green with envy! I tried to order an Astro Hog and cannot get one right now, I guess SIG is having balsa problems... I have a sweet low time Saito .80 that will haul it around someday I hope. The build is looking great!!!!

Same here. Mike emailed me and said they need more balsa so they won't be cutting any new 'Hogs until late Jan.

Shopping List so far:

Engine: Saito .72 Four Stroke

Servos: HS-485HB

Rx Battery: CBP 2100AA 6.0V

Rx: 92824 8-Channel

I think that's all I need.

Supply seems to be an ongoing issue with Sig at the moment. I bought my Hog last spring but when I ordered it Tower still was carrying it. Even at that they were out of stock and it took about a month to come back in. It was shortly after that Tower dropped the Sig kit line because of supply issues. Does anyone know if Sig is in trouble?

Here is hoping they resolve their problems. They have too many years and too many fine kits to go away.

At any rate I am glad I got mine when I did. I am looking forward to the build.

Cheers

Gord

The problem Sig is having is due to an inferior shipment of balsa. The quality was so bad they returned the entire load and now have to wait for the next shipment. This will happen from time to time and the problem may worsen as more and more balsa is diverted to wind generator industry. Sig is not in any way going out of business. so don't get in a panic and start the rumor mill. Just be patient and wait for the next shipment to arrive and new kits will be cut.
This has been discussed in other threads as well. Besides, I myself would like to build a Hog Bipe for electric power.
cheers and Happy New Year to all!

Thanks for the info! That's the first I heard about the balsa issue.

Hay DaveB,

I am really impressed with the progress that you are making on your HOG. Good idea about  the more robust landing gear. I think you made a wise choice. Have you determined the color scheme yet for the "new" HOG?

I was planning to join the wing next, but it will have to wait another day or two. Meanwhile, I did make the taildragger main gear wires. As mentioned in a previous post, I had decided to make the gear a little sturdier by using 3/16" music wire instead of the 5/32" called for in the plans. Because the landing gear blocks I substituted for those supplied in the kit were 1/4" shorter, I had to make the gear 1/4" shorter also. I am talking about the portion of the wire that sits in the 3/16" groove that are cut in the blocks.

It's a fairly easy job to make the wires if you use the K&B wire bender or similar.

A few pics are posted.

As a point of clarification, the gear provided in the kit is designed for a trike landing gear arrangement. Should you decide to build the "Hog" as a taildragger, the landing gear called for in the plan is about 1" longer than the gear provided in the kit. Sig does have the longer gear available as an option for about $ 6.00 if memory serves. However, because the optional gear from Sig is 5/32" and I am using 3/16", it required me to bend my own gear from 3/16" music wire stock.

Of couse, you could use after market gear from Dubro (or others) as diginlivn (previous post) did with very positive results, but I opted for the traditional "in the wing" gear as called for in the plans.

I am planning a little more work on the "Hog" this week and will post my progress.

In the wing gear will not pose any nose over problems with tail dragger configuration?

Thanks,

Frank

Frank,

Avoiding nose overs is the primary reason that the taildragger version requires different gear. The gear is about 1" longer and raked forward 18 degrees. Because a few hard landings may bend the gear back and still cause nose overs is the reason I opted to use 3/16" wire instead of 5/32".

Gotcha Dave. Thanks! Since I am still waiting on my kit to arrive, I am still in the planning stages on how to build mine. I did put the wire bending tool on my wish list at Tower. next time I order something from them, I'll get that as well.

Thanks again,

Frank

Frank,

I was also impressed with Dave's bending tool and how nicely it bends even the more robust landing gear. I will put this bender on my next "Tower" order as well.

Test fit the larger (3/16") landing gear today. They fit well into the groove on the blocks and the rake looks right on both wings. Tomorrow, hopelfully I will cut the slot in the wings for the dihedral brace and join the wings with epoxy.
