Great Planes .40 Cub or SIG 1/5 Cub
Hi,
Which is the better kit between the Great Planes Cub .40 or the SIG 1/5 Cub.
I'm planning to use a .72 4-stroke in either kit.
I'd also like to cover it to resemble an L-4 with olive drab, dove grey and D-Day stripes. Can anyone direct me to the appropriate sized US marking decals and sizing for the stripes.

RE: Great Planes .40 Cub or SIG 1/5 Cub
I've built and flown both...I don.t think there is a whole lot of difference, either in quality, difficulty of build, or flying charateristics. A 72 sounds like a lot of motor for what is essentially a 40 2 stroke airframe. Cubs are for lazing around on a Sunday afternoon. I like the idea of an L4 covering job....didn't the L4 have plexi windows overhead? If so, that might be a fun modification to do to the kit.

You wouldn't go wrong with either of those kits.
IMHO the sig kit is more scale, but the GP Cub would be a better match for the .72.

I definitely would go with the sig kit if it were my money. In my opinon the sig kit is so much better as far as the scale features it has already designed into it. If you wanted to take it to a higher level of scale its a perfect starting platform. I havent built very many great planes kits but I enjoy all of the sig kits. I dont know about the great planes kit but the sig 1/5 scale cub kit is all laser cut and the peices pop right out and fit together like a jig saw puzzle. I have one that I fabriced and painted with an OS 70 surpass II and it flies fantastic.

Hey David,
Thanks for directing me to khodges L-4, that is superb and exactly what i was looking for. Your Cub looks great too.
I now have a delima.
Just about everyone agrees the SIG kit is better, however it is not available here in Australia and will cost me 105% the retail value to ship it.
The Great Planes .40 Cub is available here for twice what it costs in the US.
I've done the maths and the SIG kit would cost me $120 more that the Great Planes kit. Is it worth the $120 premium over the GP kit?

I have the 60 GP cub and it is a nice plane. However when it expires it will be replaced with a sig. I think sigs look so much better. I too am doing an l-4 with Dday theme. Im using monokote to save on cost, but if I end up doing a sig version i will use something like solartex.

I have the GP 40 cub I'm going to clip the wings on... What makes the SIG that much better in terms of appearance? The GP manual says the outlines are taken from the real thing and I believe only the airfoil is modified though it is still flat bottom.
I ask because this will be my first plane of a real plane and I would like to make it as scale as my limited skills allow. Im planning on functional landing gear for starters.

Well it does make you want to second guess the sig decision so because this has come to a $120 difference. I would now say If you are looking for a plane that you want to put a lot of scale details in and you want to make it your next pride and joy and enter it in competitions etc... then I would still go with the Sig Cub. On the other hand if your just looking to build your "next" plane and your just going to take it to the feild as a sunday afternoon flyer and are not concerned about scale features, then I would say by all means get the great planes cub because that one would be just fine for that.

Easy choice, the Sig 1/5th Scale. I have built many kits over my years in the hobby and the Sig was one of the best.
Here is mine, converted to electric with a few extra touches added.

Again.. what is the difference between the two in tems of scale detail? Is it the sig kit has more molded pieces or? When I looked at the manual included with the sig kit it seemed quilte old wth dated construction methods.

Make sure you look at the Sig 1/5 Scale Manual. The 1/4 scale and the 1/6th scale are an older design. The 1/5th Scale represents all the new building techniques Sig has learned and is fully laser cut. It features a fiberglass cowl, functioning door, and a two piece wing with functional struts. The plane basically falls together straight and true.
