LOL so true! "Glue 1" x 4" blocks on end of 6" x 12" block. Sand to P-40 nose contour.

LOL, so true, most royal kits were true craftsman style kits, sandpaper was the #1 requirement when building it.

Outstanding planes but you really need to like sanding!!!! I just took some wood carving classes, I bet I could do one very well these days.

It has been stated that these kits needed a lot of shaping and sanding, which is a correct statement. These kits did however build into some of the best looking scale planes out there for a great number of years. The kits were always referred to as builders kits and they were labor intensive to build. Good Luck, Dave

That's the trick. 15 minutes carving with a good knife and chisel is several hours of sanding. On top of that, carving is so much more accurate and doesn't make dust, just nice big shavings that don't go up your nose.

Some kits/designs are worse that others. Last Royal kit I built was my Stearman.
Those gear struts were big chunks-o-balsa alright, but the rest of the plane was easy

The most scale .60-.90 sized warbirds out there. I still have a Fw190 A8 and a F4U Corsair waiting for me

Not all Royal kits were blocks of wood to carve to an airplane shape.. The F8F Bearcat is mostly planking, both cowl and fuselage.

Beautiful kits when done, too.

I built the .40 Spitfire when I was in 10th grade. Not hard to build; just traditional. I wish I had another.

Hey Jerry, I don't know that you'd want to call it "just chunks of balsa" but it sure as heck ain't no stinkin' ARF
