RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
OK, after reading this thread you guys finally got me excited about the Ultra Sports. I know I can't join until I finish the plane but an Ultra Sport 40 is on the building board now. Tail feathers done and wing is started. It's only my 2nd year in RC but this is my 4th kit (Kadet Senior, 4*Star, Slow Poke before this) and I figured it's time,
When I'm done I have an US 60 kit under the bench ..
I'll post pics when it's done!!

I think i'm an "official" brother now. Here is my progess on my US60 after three 12 packs, uhh I mean weeks. I was hoping to get more done but i only work on it friday and saturday nights after kids get to bed. After 17 yrs since my last build I think it is starting to come back to me.

I like that you are sheeting the entire wing.
I did that with my Ultra Sport .40. I added the retracts and flaps to mine as well. The wing is ready for covering, as are the tail feathers. I just need to finish up the fuse, get it assembled, and then buy my covering. I have a trim scheme in mind, but I think it is going to be EXPENSIVE!!! Oh well, I guess I'll buy my covering one roll at a time!

I have eight flights on my ultra sport now and am really enjoying it.
I think I have solved the nose over problem. When I was changing the wheels for larger ones I found that the retract legs had been bent back at some stage. Rather than straighten them, the original owner had rotated the retracts in the wing mount to make the wheels fit in the wells again. Result was that the wheels when extended were swept back a bit.
The wing mount was too munted to return the retracts to the original position, but I could shim the retracts forward to put the wheels where they belonged.
It taxis as well as it flies now.

Dear Brothers,
I figure I post pictures of the progress on my US60. It close!!! Got to finish the bottom of the wing-fuselage fairing, fillets, attach tail and control surfaces and then cover. So still a bit to go but close.
What a great project but I do have to admit that it's not for the faint of heart. Never swallowed so much wood dust even with a mask!! But the outcome is a beautiful plane with sleek lines and not a boxer. I guess it is the price you got to pay

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
So today was all work on the Ultrasport for a final push to get it done. Bottom fairing was installed (not bad), fillets w/ putty drying (not bad) and vertical stabilizer fillets completed (really bad). The blocks used to make these fillets seem to be made out of hardwood and were very difficult to sand. Outcome was good but took a long time to get done. But the heavy sanding is done on this beauty (hopefully the fillets will be easy to finish).
I attach a few pictures with today's progress.
Quick question: as you can see, I used balsa to fill part of the fillet and then finished with Elmer's wood filler. The filler is obviously thick in a few places but is it cracking a little as it is drying. I this Ok and will is be resilient enough when dry? Never used this putty for such heavy filling but I am following the advice of this forum and see how it goes.

I was debating a DLE 20 but think I'm going to use the JBA 15 instead. It will be no different then mounting a Super Tigre .61 as far as size and weight.

Thanks Mike. It did dry and the cracks were insignificant. A couple more thin applications and the fillets are now done and looking great.
So I purchased the covering over the weekend and I am doing the finishing touches (attach tail, finish radio install, fuel-proofing and hinges).
BTW, over the weekend I bought the GP hinge slotter. This is one I have to say I now consider a must have. What a joy to use!!! The only thing I would have done different is to slot the wood before installing the fins and wing tips. The tool is really not designed to get close to an inside corner so you cant get the hinges were the plans call for near the ends (I am going to use wider hinges slightly further away from the corners since I am not using the razor blade EVER again ).
Another tool I consider almost a must is the Permagrit sanding blocks. These blocks are Tungsten Carbide based and will not clog and last forever. My set is over 13 years old and I use them on composite homebuilt aircraft (fiberglass). I recommend the dual sided blocks. I have the short and long and they were invaluable for this project. The dremel barrels are also a must have. The cut balsa like it was made of dust and never clog. I noticed that Bob Violet carries them in the RC side but it is a common tool in the homebuilt aircraft supply chain (Aircraft Spruce or Wicks).

Ithink I am finally going to build the .60. Looks like rain all week and weekend so I should have plenty of time to get started. My biggest problem is sticking to it and getting it done. Every time I start a kit build stuff comes up and I get sidetracked.

Can't wait to join the brotherhood! Bought a US40 on eBay, but it'll have to wait until I get back on my flying feet - haven't flown RC in decades Going to ease back in with something a little easier - Goldberg Eagle 2 kit that should arrive tomorrow.
