I have dyed them with Rit Dye and I have painted them black by using Krylon on the INSIDE. Krylon is not fuel-proof, but if you paint the inside fuel won't get to it and it will give it a deep glossy look

I have a set of retracts designed by our own minn flyer. I have had them for 3 years and have never used them. If you are interested in them PM me.

If you do use black paint on the inside of the canopy, be careful not to leave the plane in the direct sunlight for very long. I painted the inside of the canopy on my Tiger 2, and while it looks great, the plastic has warped in the sun. I think the black paint absorbs a lot more heat than transparent paint or plastic.

If the sun would come out around here, maybe I could find out I don't think it will run or melt.

The green canopy was an experiment. It was done with the Candy Apple Green Testors. I was focused on having a clear canopy, so it worked (it took two tries!). But if I had it to do again, and was really looking for some flash, I'd look at their metal-flake paints. I think they've got a red metal-flake that sprays tranparent. That might really look sharp on a canopy.

Man do I feel stupid and your gonna laugh.. I thought you were talking about some spray for candy you would get at a bakery store or something... told ya you would laugh!

Mike,
any particular one, they make so many different Gloss blacks.. Also, any problem with RC-56 holing it on if it's painted with the Krylon?

I do not intend to reply for Mike but a comment passing by _ _ _

Like a chain is never stronger than the weakest link the adhesive adherance is not any stonger than the weakest layer.

I would mask the edges where the RC56 would be aplied so that there is no paint for the RC56.

Mike,

With regardto your comment about preferring 2-strokes on your Ultrasports, I went and did a little reading on the glow forum to see the pros and cons of both, and it is like I remember from motocross. The 2-strokes are higher reving/faster, 4-strokes higher torque at low end.

I can seewhy you might prefer faster/lighter with this plane.

I have noticed also on the simulator that the US 40 does not really loop real tight even on high rates, especially inverted. Is that a result of having a long fuselage? I increased the throws and it is a bit better, but not as tight as some other models, including the Stik on the simulator. I am not comparing to 3D planes.

Anyway, I have an almost new OS 65FX that I bought used recently. I put it on my 40 size Stik but it does not really need the extra power over the 46AX it replaced. I could just as easily put the 65FX as the Saito 100 on my US 60. I don't have to rush to a decision, the kit is coming tomorrow according to UPS.

I used to be into RC for a brief stint in the '80s. A lot has changed, we now have electrics and gas powered. But the change I like the most is the camaraderie that the internet has brought to the hobby for me.

For all of us, really.

First off, don't go by the simulator. I have flown the US on the sim and it's nothing like the real thing.

And given a choice between a 65FX and a Saito 100, I would definitely go with the 65

Just an observation, if you are painting the inside of the canopy it doesn't matter if you are using gloss or semi or flat paint, it is all going to appear glossy through the plastic

Anyone running the OS FS95V yet? I'm wondering how it compares to the 91 Surpass II. Right now they are within $5 of the same price from tower.

Any idea how to make the US60 without the plastic canopy but with balsa shape of a canopy?
Doesn’t have to be identical just similar to the original canopy, I want to fiberglass it all.

Use the canopy as a plug and lay up glass over it.......

Or get a block of soft balsa and carve one.

was trying to invent some fancy sheeting and never thought I can forget the canopy inside or carve it out of a balsa block.
Thanks

Carving a canopy shouldn't be any different, or harder than carving the wing tips, nose and belly pan, which you have to do anyway. By the time you finished those you would have the techniques down. It would be sort of like the wing tips only bigger.

Alex,
you know what would be interesting to do and i thought about doing it to mine..Lower the turtle deck about a1" to 1 -1/2, maybe more, from the back of the cockpit and taper back to the tail. It will give the fuse more of a stream line look, mynext one I build Iwillchange the whole top to make itlook sleeker. I like the looks of the US, but I think the cockpit is just to big, but that'sjust MHO...

But that big cockpit gives a broad side which is better for doing a knife edge

Mustangman,
Once I mentioned about "maybe no turtle deck.." and every body said - that because of this turtle deck this airplane does these nice knife edges so I want to keep it.
I like the turtle deck , its one of these things that make this airplane unique and many times I hear "hey that's an ultra sport where did you get one we had to build it back then" so I'd like to keep it, the canopy is a different story so I'm finishing my second US60 and preparing for my 3rd.

Mike,
do you link lowering the TT an inch will take away from it's knife edge performance? I like to tinker, so i was just thinking about it... I also thought about raising the sides of the CP and cutting the canopy down some, but It didn't look right to me..

One of the reasons many of us bought the kit after it was reissued, rather than the ARF or some other sports plane was because we like it the way it is. They got it right the first time. I personally like the looks of the Super sportster a little better than the Ultra, but nothing beats the way the Ultra Sport flies.

There are plenty of mods to change the way it looks (such as wood canopies) other than re-doing the airframe or flying surfaces.

I agree with RoyR, with the exception of the Super Sportster which holds second place on my list . The shape of the US just works. Don't mess with a good thing. That doesn't mean you can't add flaps, or retracts, or lights, or even sheet the wings completely .
