Hello guys,

I just looked up the "ultra sport" and find the difference between the 40 size vs 60 size.

Wingspan 55" vs 61.5"
Weight 6 lbs vs 7 lbs .
24oz/sq fr vs 23oz/sq ft

It just puzzles me that they are nearly the same size and weight.

Yes Zor not much difference thats why I am building a 60 + 15% right now. 71" wingspan, 60" fuselage, OS120AX for power. Have taken many pictures will post them when the plane is done.

That looks to be the perfect size for the US.

I look forward to seeing it as well. What do you plan to use for the canopy?

r/coldie,

Nice plane! That thing does great with the TT 60. And with the gear deployed, too!

Good looking bird, but if you have retracts why was the whole flight with gear down?

The struts on the retracts keep bending and won'tretract straight into the wing. I'm keeping them down until I get it fixed.

Get heavier wires and make softer landings!! (I'm just bugging ye) I have machancal retrats on mine and kept stripping out gears on the cheep serve until I spend extra for a futaba servo. Gears are a little stronger and don't strip as easy.

Mine keep bending also! I have tried coils, they help a little, increased size to 3/16, but they still bend. Now the set screws in the Robart mechanical retracts are stripping; drilled & tapped for #6. My US 120 size with a ST S-2300, pump (Vp-30) & Perry carb is heavy!! Cahnge fuel tank out 3 times, getting smaller, now down to about 14 oz, I love the plane & how it flies, but it surely is Heavy, weights 13#.s!!!

I was thinking about removing the retracts andinstalling a strap landing gear, but I would rather get the retracts working right. That thing is beautiful with the landing gear sucked up !!!!!

Guys,

If you are able to find a business making springs (helicoidal springs).

Have the fellows bend the wire for you where the wheels are going on.

Bring your plane if necessary to show him what you have.

Spring steel will bend upon landing, absorbing shock, but always return to its original form.
So the retract would keep working fine.

I had many models with spring steel landing gears.

Good luck,

Zor

Grass fields do not get along with retracts no amount of thickness of wire will keep them from bending ask me how I know. Either you keep rebending the wire or you will just never retract the gear until you find you a paved runway to enjoy the retract business. That is a nice flying plane and that TT is a great match for it. I hope you enjoy the plane for a long time to come and welcome to the brotherhood.

r/coldie,

If you make or replace the wire that bends with spring steel wire as I previously posted your problem will be gone.

Think of the springs on the valves of your automobile engine or the helicoidal springs on the car suspension. They keep bending and keep bending but always return to original dimension and shape.

You can even bend the spring wire yourself with heating only the area of the bend for the wheels.
That is not where the present wire bends. The rest will remain a spring wire.

Well,

''Somone'' was looking out for me this weekend. I was sitting at my flying field yesterday in the 25 knot winds. I was the only person there and I was just getting ready to leave when a friend of mine who I hadn't seen in almost two years, pulls up in his van beside me. We got to talking and out of the blue, he asked me if I had ever got my US 60 kit finished. I told him no, that I sold the kit before I had a chance to start it. Then he proceeds to say ''If you want the one I have, you are more than welcome to it''. He said that he had to stripped the old monocote off and it was just sitting in his garage.... I could not say YES fast enough..........

So next weekend, I will be the proud owner of a US60. I need to find the thread where someone put retracts in their existing wing, because I want to do the same thing. Even though I doubt I can make it electric, I have a YS60 and a Hatori pipe that will suit it just fine.......YAAHHHOOOOO ! ! ! !
David, that sounds like a good combo and should be a blast.. I would look into electric retracts if it was me, I think that would be the way to go being it is built already....[img][/img]
Mustangman40,

You are absolutely right about using electric retracts. I have a pair of the original Lado electrics that I had in my H9 Miss America. The wing mods should be pretty simple. I am however having second thoughts on using my YS60 & pipe though. The motor is supposed to go with a Great Planes Illusion kit that I've been trying to get rid of for the last three years. I do have a backup motor however, a YS91 4 stroke, but if I remember correctly, my friend had a 2 stroke in it the last time I saw him fly it. So I doubt the YS91 will fit. Anyway, if it doesn't I still may put the YS60 on it or buy an OS 75AX for it.

David
Well,

It's looking better and better all the time. We had our anual spring club Fly-In on Saturday and my friend brought me my Ultrasport 60. Needless to say, I was one happy camper. I did confirm that the plane will need to be re-covered so while I was sitting down taking a break, I proceeded to start stripping off the old Monocote. I got over 95% of the wing stripped and most of the fuse as well. The day even got better when another friend and I were talking. I told him that the plane originally flew with an Enya 60 2 stroke. My friend told me he may have a spare motor I can use. When I asked him what he had in mind, he said he has a Webra Speed 61 with a header and pipe so I can save my YS60.

OMG, IS THIS A GREAT HOBBY OR WHAT ?

Don't forget to flesh-out that cockpit Mustangman, unless you're going to paint the canopy.
I went with painting the canopy, I think it gives it a good look..

Work kind of got in the way of progress, but I found some time today.. I need to get to the HS and get some more covering and my tail wheel, but here are a few pics to show you where I am at..

I used epoxy on the whole joining of the wing for the added strength...........

I'd like to join the brotherhood.  The last number I see is 132.  I'll take 133 if no one has it.  If it's taken where are we at?
